Many thanks to all the responses received. I am feeling much, much better with all the information posted and understand (mostly) of the processes with passengers embarking and disembarking at various ports (Athens, Venice and Rome). We are sailing from Athens to Barcelona and look forward to the experience.

We are due to go on the Mediterranean & Adriatic Sojourn cruise on Viking Star in May. Reservations for the shore excursions are due to be available in a couple of days time. I have noticed there are NO excursions in Rome!! Can anyone explain?
