  1. Mike- Hudson Valley NY here (and a big hockey & NY Ranger fan) I just wanted to thank you very much for all your help that you posted here re: the NCL Compass Reward Points Info.

I printed your 7/10/07 posting and used it for all my reference info.

I have been saving these points since 2005 and I just requested 2 $500.00 certs for use on the 4 day NCL Sky cruise (2 kids going for just tax and surcharge) out of Miami in Aug.

I am currently out of work at 52 and the info you provided really helped me give the kids a vacation this summer anyway.

My final pymt is due 6/24 and I just Fed-Exed the certs today (6/9) to NCL in Miami (to the address you provided). I am hoping the $200.00 deposit I put down to hold the reservation will be credited back to my card. The 2 certs will cover the whole crusie for 4 (approx $940.00) and I don't think I get "change back" so I'll just lose the $60.00 in value.

What is your (or anyone else's-thank you) experience with NCL crediting back a deposit?

Thanks very much for all your helpful info and I'm sorry about Chris Drury.

    Best regards,

    Dan

Thanks for the kind words Dan, I'm just glad to contribute where I can! I feel NCL Compass Rewards is a great program, one that has allowed my family of 4 to see the world on a budget, thus I help spread the word where I can!

As for the cert's, I've never overpaid with them thus I can't answer your question directly on being refunded, however, others have reported getting their CC's credited back for overpayment's (in your case the $200 down payment). I'm not sure about the "change" however!

We'll be on the Sky for a 3 day sailing 10 days before you... too bad we're not on the same cruise!

P.S. I was a big Drury fan and was disappointed when he left, that said, I wish him well (except when the Sabres play against him)! After a disappointing 07/08, I think the Sabres will right themselves and again be a threat to contend with in 08/09... particularly now that Drury/Briere saga is a full year in the past. The controversy of losing those 2 really messed with the Sabres psyche this past season, and having that firmly in the reaview mirror is a good thing! Here's hoping for a solid draft and maybe a solid UFA vet on the blue line with some leadership abilities coming our way on July 1 (personally I'm hoping for a Jason Smith type).

  2. :D :D

You are awesome! Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I love instant gratification!!

When I think of all the money that members of Cruise Critic have saved me over my past cruising years, I am very grateful. For all the help, assistance and knowledge you've all given me, Gracias!!

    :)

LOL, no problem... I'm with you on the instant gratification theme!

As for these boards... there is no doubt they are a valuable resource for all of us!

  3. Sorry..I have another question (hopefully the last)

I see the back of the voucher instructs to send a check for any remaining final payment along with the voucher.

I'll be sending the vouchers in pretty far ahead of schedule...do I have to include the remaining balance?

I'd prefer waiting until final payment is due and paying that by NCL BOA/MC directly to the TA.

    has anyone done this?

You do not have to send in final payment with the certificates. I never have.

You can make final payment when it's due for the remaining balance.

  4. I would check with TA first. The company that we use asks that we send them to their revenue dept so they can forward to NCL. I always send w/return receipt so I will have proof that they signed for envelope.

I strongly advise against sending them to a TA. There is absolutely no reason to, and it can only create problems. Any TA telling you that they have to go to them first is full of bunk. DON'T DO IT.

There have been posts here of NCL not receiving the certificates from TAs, and TAs taking no responsibility leaving the cruiser in a lurch of he said she said, and no proof that the certificates ever made it into NCL's hands.

These certificates are as good as cash. Treat them that way, and send them straight to the source... NCL Accounting.

  5. Thank you SO much!! :D

Ok, the address on page 1 is different from the one on back of the cert....I should still send to the one posted on page one?

The address on page 1 is a direct street address to NCL's accounting department (necessary for Fedex). That's the address I've always used.

The address on the certificates is a PO Box, which isn't as direct, and can't be used if you choose to go with a carrier other than the USPS.

Also, when you send in the certificate(s), I'd also send a short letter stating your reservation info that you're applying it to, as well as a copy of the reservation itself.

  6. Please forgive me if this has already been asked.

I booked through a TA (on-line). Is it best for me to send my certificates to the TA, or should I send them directly to NCL?

I advise that they be sent directly to NCL Accounting in Miami (addresses are on page 1 of this thread). I'd send it via a secure means, such as USPS Express Mail, Certified Return Receipt, or Fedex.

I'd also make copies, and send 1 copy to the TA.

I would NOT send them to the TA directly, it just adds a kink in the chain for problems to arise.

  7. Wow!! That make my number look pretty anemic.

    PE

LOL, $26,500 in savings to date is anything BUT anemic on your end. It's awesome in my book!

I had no idea this card has been around for 13+ years. I figured it came out sometime in the 2000's.

  8. I couldn't read through all these pages so I'll just ask the question -- forgive me if it's been asked before . . . .

When I secure my onboard account with my NCL BOA card, will my cash withdrawals at the casino count toward reward points?

You probably see my angle -- withdraw a bunch of cash from the casino to run up points and then use the cash to pay off the account when I get home.

Am I crazy or would this work?

    Sea Hound

Yes you can (and you WILL get the Compass rewards points), but get your flame suit on... if the gamblers see this post they won't like it since NCL is one of the only lines to allow the privilege of drawing up to $2k in cash in the casino each day against your Onboard account and NOT have it count as a cash advance.

  9. I just booked my first cruise with my NCL points. I am so glad to see this thread! I also was at a loss for a good three months because I had already attained my $1000 annual limit on my card. If my current NCL card is in my name and my husband's name, how do I order a second set of cards? Can they also be in my name and my husbands or should I just order one in my name and then add my husbands? I also didn't realize that you could use a TA for booking your cruise. I booked directly through NCL. I am hoping that it was the best price for a mini suite. I am cruising the Mexican Riviera this October! Thanks for any advice!

If you have good credit, Bank of America will allow you can to get multiple accounts in your name (or both names if you prefer). Each distinct account can then earn up to $1000 in Compass Rewards per year.

If your existing account has a high credit line, you can call and ask to have the line split into 2 accounts, or if you prefer, you can just apply for a 2nd card and get whatever line of credit they grant (if it's not enough, you can split off some of the credit from your existing card to the new one).

The NCL Compass Rewards Card is IMO, the best card out there. It really is a great program, and if you have the spending power, multiple card accounts are great!

My wife and I each have multiple accounts with a whopping $10.5k in savings on cruises to date since we first got the cards a few years ago!

BTW, here's an example of how great this program is. Our actual out of pocket expense for our upcoming Gem cruise to the Western Mediterranean was only $722.72! And that's for 4 people (thus an average of $180.68pp for a 7 night cruise) in 2 cabins, a BB Balcony and JJ Interior! We used $3500 in Compass Rewards certificates on this trip.

  10. I can't find this answer here after looking through more than a 100 of these posts. My question is this:

I know that I can earn no more than 1,000 points per year, but do I have to get certificates for $1000 before I start earning more? Or, if I don't redeem my 1,000 points, will my account start accruing more points after my aniversary date?

You can earn up to 1000 points per year. The points are good for a max of 3 years, thus you can accumulate up to 3000 points before they start expiring.

  11. Ok - All kinds of ?'s I'm hoping someone can help with. BOA states that miles will expire after 3 years & that you must use certs within a year after receiving them. Does this actually give you 4 years?
Depending on when you request the certificates, you could potentially have up to 4 years to sail from when the 1st points were earned. That said it's unlikely you'd have a full 4 years.

Basically, it's as you think, you have 3 years to redeem the points before they start expiring. Once you redeem them into certificate form, you have one year to SAIL (not to book). It's also my understanding that you must complete the sailing prior to the expiration of the certificate.

Do the certs need to be redeemed within a year, or must you sail within a year. I have some poisnt that will expire this year, but we're not planning on cruising until fall 2009.
Answered above. You must complete your sailing within one year from the date the certificates are issued.

Being that I can book more than a year out, if I request 1 or 2 $500 certs will BOA/NCL use the oldest points (closest to expiration) first and use as a partial payment at time of booking?
I do believe they will go oldest to newest, though I've never had it happen personally. Basically look at your points as a 36 month rolling window. As you hit month 37, points earned in month 1 expire.
  12. Just to give an idea on the current timeline for receiving these certificates, I got my recent request in about 1 week.

I requested 3 certificates on Thursday November 1st, and received them 8 days later on Friday November 9th.

For those doubting this program, it is FANTASTIC!

My wife and I have now redeemed $7,000 in certificates on 4 cruises over the past 3 years. :D

  13. Our $1500 in certificates just arrived, in the nick of time! Now it's time to send them to NCL...but the address on the certificate is a PO Box:

    Norwegian Cruise Line

    P.O. Box 025403

    Miami, FL 33102-5403

I see it is recommended to send via FedEx or at least Certified Mail...but can you, to a Post Office Box?

I'm sorry, the address I referenced in post #2 is their Accounting Office and Corporate HQ. That's the street address to use when sending via FEDEX. I've used that address to submit certificates via FEDEX for 3 trips with no problems.

  14. One of the early posts mentioned something about needing to be in the room for the certificate to be used.

My parents are looking to go on a cruise next August (2008) and I was hoping to work up points towards either an upgrade for them, or $ off their cruise. Is this not possible?

The certificates are not transferable. At least one authorized cardmember must be staying in the room to use a certificate.

  15. Which number do you call to redeem your points? I can't get through to anyone that can help me!! I have this number written down from when we did it last year but they say they're not doing it now!

As I posted in the 2nd post of this thread:

    To Redeem certificates:

Call the # on the back of the card (it should be 800 421-2110)

Ask the rep. if they're familiar with the Compass Rewards program, if they are, it should be a breeze, if not, you may be better off calling again till you get a rep who is familiar with the program.

Certificates come via regular mail, usually within 1-2 weeks, but to be safe, generally request at least 3-4 weeks before final payment is due.

  16. I was just about to send a personal check to pay off my car loan, can I use one of the BOA checks I get with my NCL credit card to pay it off to get reward points?

I guess I am asking if one earns reward points when using the checks.

You will NOT earn points for cash advance checks written off your account, only for actual charges.

That said, see if you can pay with credit card, sometimes you can.

  17. Beside the base cost of a cabin, can the $500 certificates be used to cover any other costs associated with the cruise -- i.e., taxes, port charges, travel insurance and airfare?

I believe the short answer is yes.

The certificates can be used to pay all but the deposit for anything on your original booking confirmation from NCL. That would include port fees, taxes, NCL booked air and NCL purchased insurance as far as I know.

  18. I have a question. I know the maximum points you may accumulate is 1,000 per account per year. However when does the year start? Is it from the date that the card is issued to (ie you opened your account in March of this year) until the anniversary of that date?

Or would your year begin again January 1st 2008?

The points accrue on a 12 month cycle that begins with your anniversary date each year (the date your 1st statement cycle begins), it does NOT go by calendar year (i.e. Jan 1 - Dec 31) unless your anniversary date happens to be January 1!

  19. Basic facts:

    - Earn 25 Bonus Points after the first qualifying transaction

    - Earn 4 Points for every $100 spent on Norwegian Cruise Line purchases*

    - Earn 3 Points for every $100 spent on purchases*

    - Redeem for stateroom upgrades or cruise discount. See Redemption Options for details

    - No Annual Fee

    * I've always received this in a % of purchases, thus you don't have to spend $100 to get 3 or 4 points, rather you 3% or 4% of your purchases (take your total monthly purchases, multiply by 3% for your monthly points earned. Add 1% for any NCL/NCLA purchases.

While there is also a 0% balance transfer option, this is generally not worthwhile since you'd be carrying a balance, and payments would go against the balance transfer instead of your purchases, meaning as an end result you'd be paying interest on your charges that are earning points (not necessarily the best way to utilize this card).

You can earn up to $1000 per year, with a maximum of 250 points in any given month. This equates to a maximum of $33,333 in purchases annually, with a maximum of $8,333 in any given month.

    Redemption Options:

    Points Cruise Discounts

    500 - $500 cruise discount

    1,000 - $1,000 cruise discount

    1,500 - $1,500 cruise discount

    2,000 - $2,000 cruise discount

    2,500 - $2,500 cruise discount

    3,000 - $3,000 cruise discount

Points Stateroom Upgrades (generally NOT considered a wise use of points)

100 - One category upgrade for first person in stateroom

200 - One category upgrade for first and second person in stateroom

300 - Two category upgrade for first person and one category upgrade for second person in stateroom

400 - Two category upgrade for first and second person in stateroom

    To Redeem certificates:

Call the # on the back of the card (it should be 800 421-2110)

Ask the rep. if they're familiar with the Compass Rewards program, if they are, it should be a breeze, if not, you may be better off calling again till you get a rep who is familiar with the program.

Certificates come via regular mail, usually within 1-2 weeks, but to be safe, generally request at least 3-4 weeks before final payment is due.

    Caveats

    - Points expire in 3 years.

    - Certificates expire 1 year from date of issuance. NOTE: you must SAIL by this expiration date, not turn the certificate(s) in to NCL.

    - Discount Certificates are good towards final payment on any booked fare. You may book directly with NCL or with the TA of your choosing.

    - Discount Certificates cannot "officially" be used against your deposit, however several users have posted that they've overpaid with the certificates and received credits on their credit cards for their previously paid deposits. That said, it's at your own risk, as the "official" policy in the card terms that any unused overages are lost.

    - Cardholder or authorized user must reside in the cabin to use the certificates

    - Photocopy both sides of your certificates before forwarding them to NCL!

    - Certificates should be mailed directly to NCL Accounting to avoid problems. I generally use FEDEX to ensure delivery, while others recommend USPS Certified Return Receipt

    - NCL Accounting's address is listed on the back of the certificate. I generally send to:

    Attn: Accounting

    Norwegian Cruise Lines

    7665 Corporate Center Drive

    Miami, FL 33126

    - high spending users CAN have more than one account with Bank of America and thus earn additional points on the additional card(s)
