  1. I make a point of doing something that we can't do anywhere else. We did zip-lining in Mazatlan (when it was new), cave tubing in Kauai, horseback riding in the ocean off Puerto Vallarta. For me, it's all about the experience.

Some of these excursions were off the ship and some were on our own. Do your homework and see what you can find off the beaten path. I've found that there are a lot of "excursions" that can be done much cheaper on your own, but you have to be willing and comfortable winging it a bit. For example, I'd be happy just hiring a cab for the day and say, "Show us around the island." But maybe that's just me.

Enjoy your cruise the way you want it!

  2. I'm looking for some tips from others who have done this before. We already have excursions planned for other ports, so we're looking to do a cheap beach day at Cable Beach. We're a family of four (me, wife, two kids - 14 & 17) and we just want to relax on the beach and play in the water. Maybe buy some drinks or snacks.

We've never been to Nassau before. Can you tell me how to get to the jitney (#10?) from port? What's the best way to get on the beach without having to buy a day pass?

    Thanks!

  3. Thank you everyone for the replies and information. I appreciate the value of your experience. :-)

It sounds like the discounted upgrade is a fair deal, although I'm not that interested. I was under the (mistaken) impression that Carnival would sometimes offer free upgrades if there is excess inventory. Sounds like no.

Anytime I've called Carnival about this or other things, they always say "Oh, you booked through a travel agent" (like it's a bad thing) and say that they can't help me. I'm not unhappy with my TA - she's done a fine job for me, although I didn't pay any less than I would have through Carnival.

I was wondering if others who booked directly through Carnival we're getting better upgrade offers. I guess not.

    Thanks for the info!

  4. We booked through a travel agent for our cruise on the Conquest. Next time I'll book directly through Carnival -- there was no advantage in going through a TA.

I heard that there are still quite a number of empty cabins on this cruise, so I contacted my TA to see if there are any upgrades available for our two cabins (one inside, one OV on deck 2). She emailed me back that there are is only an upgrade available for the OV to a balcony for $320. Not worth it in my opinion, but I'm curious what others think. Should we ask for something else?

  5. Taking the Conquest two weeks from today. We have two sea days on our 7 day eastern Caribbean cruise. Does that mean we have two brunch days?

  6. cruisett .com is pretty good. Not only does it show the ships in port, it also shows the passenger volume at the port that day.

  7. We decided to book the Big Bus hop-on / hop-off excursion from Carnival when we return to Miami. It gives us early debarkation and they'll hang onto our luggage all day while we tour Miami. At the end of the day we collect our luggage and board a coach for MIA. $49.99/pp. This will give us the flexibility to visit the spots we're interested in. Has anyone else done Big Bus tours?

We've been to Florida several times, but this is our first time to Miami. Looking forward to it! Wish we could fit in an Everglades tour, too.

  8. So I was thinking of ordering the lobster and filet, although I do love a good ribeye. We're dining at the steakhouse the first night and believe they will be serving surf and turf the following night for elegant night. Is the surf and turf in the steakhouse much better/different than the MDR?

  9. Knew I forgot one.

    Here's the Caribbean Manhattan:

    CARIBBEAN MANHATTAN

    -2 dsh angostura bitter,

    -2oz Makers mark,

    -1oz sweet Vermouth

-0.5oz Monin spiced brown sugar syrup

Mix over ice, stir, and strain into martini glass. Garnish with cocktail cherry.

    Mmmm. That one sounds good!

  10. That's what we mean to do (I called it a fan boat tour). :-) The trouble with the excursion off the ship is that it also includes an airport transfer. The tour itself may last only two hours and I don't want to be dropped off at the airport and have to wait around for 6 to 7 hours for our flight.

I've heard good things about http://www.miamibeach411.com. I'm wondering if they could pick us up at the port and take us for a day long tour, including the Everglades tour.

  11. We are flying into MIA the night before our February cruise - expected to reach the Hyatt Regency Miami about 8pm. We can board between 11am-2pm Sunday, so we'll have a few hours the night before and most of the next morning in downtown Miami.

Our cruise returns to Miami at 8am and our flight doesn't leave MIA till 8:30pm.

I'm looking for ideas for our family of four (us and our two kids, 14 and 17) both before and after the cruise. We've never been to Miami before. I was thinking of an fan boat tour, but not sure what else. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
