We will be in Alta next week - 6th (pm only) / 7th March (all day).
I understand the ship will dock at Elvebakken, but I can't find any sign of a dock on Google maps or Google Earth.
Can anyone please tell me exactly where cruise ships dock and whether there is anything walkable from the ship? We're doing a ship excursion the second day but wanted to just stretch our legs on the first afternoon and wondered whether we can see some local shops or cafes?
Would be grateful for any tips from anyone who has stopped off in this port.
The ships dock near the airport and the shuttle bus runs into town. Alta has a modern shopping centre opposite where the buses stop, it also has hotels and other businesses in the surrounding area. The tourism people will probably meet the ship and provide maps.
There will be many dogs and 'mushers' in the town preparing for the long husky race Finnmarksløpet

Personally, I take the cruise tour. If there are any delays on the road (moose, snow etc.) then they wait.

we have found www.three.co.uk works well in Norway & UK

Is anybody else booked on this trip. I am looking forward to it but am apprehensive about being on a small ship if the sea is rough.
Much of the passage is done in 'inner waters' and, when I've been onboard, they have warned when we're approaching rough outer-seas and for how long. They've also rearranged meal times so they don't coincide with rough seas.

Cruise & Maritime Voyages has cruises to Norway in February 2015 and March 2015.
They are 11 and 14 days voyages called "To the land of the Northern Lights" on board the Marco Polo.
In April and May the Marco Polo does four 6,7 and 8 days Norwegian Fjords cruises.
CMV (Marco Polo & Discovery), and Fred Olsen both still have much of their 2015 schedules to publish. Watching to see their cruises.

Last year, there were very good Aurora displays in Scotland as early as August, so November in Norway should be OK so long as the skies are clear enough.
Aurora photographs from Norway showed very good auroras in late summer 2013.

I've also experienced hot sunshine in April/May so make sure there are some thinner clothes in your layers of clothing.

You will probably also want to take your sunglasses :) always an essential in my suitcase

Have used this company three times now, once at very short notice. He also kept in touch by mobile phone and then collected us when our train arrived late in London.

I have seen a snow-blower being used on another ship

I should be OK for memory cards in Norway. I've got 7, with an overall capacity of 54gb, and
I use an average of 10GB video storage space each day when I'm sailing in Norway. Sometimes I can edit this down to a more manageable size but the problem with this is that there is always something else to see and sometimes the time needed to do any editing isn't available.

Cruise & Maritime (CMV) has some listed

Having observed the cleaning and preventative measures taken on Black Watch during one of the outbreaks, I would not dream of taking action against them.
If certain passengers had followed the VERY simple instructions given, the outbreak would have been unlikely to spread.
I'd also be interested in the levels of infection in the places the cruises were departing from.

There seem to be 3 fjord cruises on Marco Polo next spring with different itineraries. Which sailing are you on?

Greetings all,
Have booked for Fjords cruise on the Marco Polo
A few questions:
1 - Thoughts / Reviews of the boat?
2 - Is it worth getting Kroner before we leave?
3 - Any recommendations for excursions on the trip?
4 - We are in our Mid 30's, are we likely to be the youngest people on the boat?!?!?!?
1 - Really good ship for Norwegian fjords, small enough to visit smaller places with a deep hull, so comfortable in bad weather.
2 - Yes, we would get a small amount of kroner and then withdraw more from the ATMs if/as we need it. The exchange rate is fairly good at the moment in comparison to what it has been recently. We use credit cards for any bigger purchases or meals.
4 - Yes, you are likely to be among the younger passengers but don't let that put you off, there are usually lots of interesting passengers to chat with. Make the effort to interact with the crew, they're fun (if busy) people and many have been with the ship for several years.

That "basic" level with Hurtigruten might be OK with some people, but not please others.
I would point out that the ship shown in this photograph was the oldest in the fleet and is no longer owned by Hurtigruten. There is now one traditional ship (Lofoten) and one middle-aged ship, all the rest are modern. The food is excellent, excursions and commentaries interesting. There is often a singer or musician onboard but very little other entertainment.

For those of us in Portsmouth the day before sailing (08 Feb) there is a concert on at the Royal Marines Museum 'A night at the museum' . I've also bought an annual pass to the Historic Dockyard because it worked out more economic than buying individual tickets to each attraction (but we're in Portsmouth twice this year).

I recently contacted the tourist office in Molde and here is their very useful reply .....
Very useful, thanks. See you onboard.

Yes we have ours baggage labels and all.
Thanks. I think the weather might have delayed ours.

Does anyone have their tickets yet?

Really good timelapse from Kristiansund including the Boudicca.

I can answer any question about Kristiansund if you want as it is my hometown.
Can I please ask you where the cruise ships normally dock? I can look it up on Google maps. We have a neighbour who belongs to Kristiansund and I think she is over there now.

I bought mine in a 'Three' store while we were in transit through London but I think they are available through several suppliers? I just know I get a good connection in Norway.
