  1. Hi;  I have life threatening nut allergies, and I have been sailing safely with HAL for the past 30 years!

I recommend eating, whenever possible, in the main dining room.  Get to know your wait staff.  They are always diligent.  For instance, I was at afternoon tea when our waiter appeared at my side with a plate of delicacies special chosen for me!  Another time, at lunch, he appeared with a basket of bread just for me.

At dinner I am presented with the following evening's menu.  I fill it in, and sometimes, if an item is with nuts, I ask if it can be made specially for me - and it is.

HAL is wonderful.  If possible, however, I recommend sailing with more than one epipen.  That gives both me and my husband some security.

Have a wonderful cruise - your grandson will be in good hands!

  2. As a new cruiser with Royal Caribbean I have asked for a change from My Time Dining to Fixed Dining on our New Year cruise wit Jewel of the Seas.  Our family, travelling together, were unable to get the same dining reservations using the app, so I asked our travel agent to change to fixed dining for the six of us.  Here's my question - we were given a  dining time of 6 p.m. To what level of the dining room would we be assigned?

    Thanks!

Just notice that MTD on Jewel currently opens at 6:45 pm. When we were on board lines for MTD were often long (both with and without reservations), but that may vary by cruise.

Traditional dining times now are 5:15 and 8.

Show times now typically are 7:15 and 9:15, which are fit traditional dining times well.  People who select MTD can either go to the early show then go to dinner after the show.  Or go to dinner and hit the late show.

I do not know when the OP is cruising; it is possible times could change by then, especially if Jewel changes embarkation port by then

We are actually on the New Year's Eve cruise out of San Juan.  I really appreciate the responses - from what I can see, we can go with either MTD or set dining.  The Maitre'D should be able to help!  As a cruiser with many sailings with a variety of lines, I'm looking forward to a new experience.

  4. Our family is taking its first Royal Caribbean cruise late this year on the Jewel of the Seas.  I have severe allergies that RCI has told me they can accommodate, however they have asked me to consider selecting a set dining time so that we may have the same servers on a daily basis.  Before I make that request, I have two questions that I am hoping can be answered:

    1. What are the set times for dining?

    2. How many shows are presented nightly, and at what times?

( I have family who love to be entertained!)

Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

  5. I have a tree nut allergy, and I cruise a lot with Holland America.  I do notify the line through their special services, and I also make sure to see the Maitre'd when we get on board. There has always been a letter from HAL waiting for me in my state room, concerning my allergies.

Depending on whether you select a set dining time, or as you please dining you should make sure that the menu for the following evening is handed to you.  Set dining, your server will know, and should automatically get the menu to you - it was often waiting at my seat as  entered the dining room!  With a variety of servers in the As You Please section, you must ask the server to get you the menu.  Make sure you write your cabin number on the top of the paper, it is that number that will track you when you enter the dining room.  I would often ask for something that was showing nuts - for example a cheese tray, and would write, beside it, No Nuts!

When you are in the buffet ask to speak to the manager.  He or she will help you select appropriate items.  Be careful with desserts - you can aways have yummy ice creams!

Above all both you and your son should be asking questions of servers and of managers abut the composition of food items.  For your information, I have always had wonderful thoughtful service, and I trust the program that ensures my food is safe!

    I hope this helps!

  6. Orlando Ashford has left the hotel and is bringing the rest of the passengers still on the Westerdam to our hotel.  They will arrive late this afternoon on buses.  They will then join with us to await flights home.

We expect that repatriation will take a few more days!

We understand that Holland America knows which countries will allow us safe passage, and will route us accordingly.

  7. I am here in the hotel.  The testing was conducted by a health team - some of whom were in full hazmat gear - and consisted of a temperature check, a medical information form and two swabs - one nasal, and one throat.  Please do not give false information .  We are now waiting to be flown home.  We are virus free!

Just read that about 1/2 the test results for those in the hotels have come back negative (those still on the ship will be the last to undergo testing) - However, which countries will trust these results and allow the passengers to transit through given that the same Cambodia tested and found the infected woman negative.  Will they accept that the tests are quite often wrong regardless of who is undertaking them, or will they just not trust the Cambodian testing.

Please quote your source.  Anxious people in PhnomPenh are still waiting to hear!

  9. Hello again:

When we were docked in Sihanoukville on day 1, those not having flights arranged that day were allowed to go to beaches on buses organized by the ship.  Some passengers made their way into town.

When we disembarked we were escorted onto buses on the pier.  We had a police escort to the airport and we were delivered straight to the tarmac and the plane.

The president of Holland America is here in the hotel  today- in meetings.

    People are still undergoing testing.

Now I'm signing off to enjoy the lovely gardens of the hotel.

  10. Just an update from one who is in Phnom Penh waiting to return home. (That is - on the front line!)

There have been several discrepancies reported on this board so - here goes!

We were all given a health screening the day we were allowed to leave the ship.

We left the ship on Saturday morning and were driven to the Sikhanoukville airport where we flew on a chartered plane to Phnom Penh.  There more chartered planes were supposed to take us onwards to Kuala Lumpur for connecting flights home.  As we waited in line for that flight we were informed that Malaysia was denying us entry.

We were placed on buses and brought to this hotel.  At the hotel our embassies have been in attendance, they all know where we are, if they need to contact us.

Yesterday we were all given screening , temperature checks, nose and throat swabs, and are now waiting for the results.

We are allowed to have access  to the hotel grounds, but are requested to wear the masks that have been given to us.

We have just completed a request form for flights home, delivered to us by Holland America.

Yes - HAL is paying for our hotel rooms, which include breakfast.  A $50 US daily food and drink allowance will be covered by HAL when we return home .

Most HAL guests here are positive, and quite upbeat.

We are Canadians, and are prepared to undergo whatever quarantine is demanded to return home to the blessed ice and snow!!!

Hope this helps you  who are following this.

  11. We are indeed packed and ready to do whatever Holland America has planned to get us home.

We have American disease control personnel on board.  I also understand that a Canadian disease control person is waiting for us on land.  As a Canadian, that is nice to know!

I don't think that we will be seeing any movement for passengers until tomorrow.

We still have to dock, and I was told that there are buses at the dock waiting to take passengers to the airport, where there are chartered planes waiting to take us to Phnom Penh for regular flights.

I just would like everyone to know what a privilege it has been to be on board this ship with its phenomenal crew, and a very upbeat majority of passengers.

At our crew farewell show yesterday, the crew were in tears, as were we.

Now ready to complete our journey.
