We have never encounter a soot problem on a Princess ship because of the way the decks stick out.  On a Carnival ship we had a horrible problem and would never do that again 🙂  As for the "private" entrance both C-753 and C-752 (opposite side of the ship) are at the end of the hallway - then to get to C-753 you turn left and go to the end of that short hallway where your cabin door is - so no traffic - no one but crew ever comes near your door.  With the Medallion when we turn the corner at the end of the hall we can hear our door click open 🙂  C-752 is the same, just on the other side of the ship.

That's great to know, thanks!  Maybe I'll be able to talk my husband into trying an aft cabin with that info!

We love the "private" entrance.  We had been on a cruise where the drunks were roaming the halls at 2am waking everyone up - and we never heard them 🙂

We love the white noise of the wake, we love the movement, and we absolutely love getting back from shore and having our friends join us on the big balcony for a sail away party knowing no matter what the weather was we could be out there!  The last cruise (British Isles) I screwed up because it was so port intensive with bad weather that we never really got to use the balcony other than on one of the 2 sea days - so it was wasted $$ - but we'll enjoy it on the next two Caribbean cruises 🙂

@bjkTX love that you chose the same exact cabin each time!  And I love those aft cabins as well, although my husband doesn't like the soot issues. What do you mean by the "private" entrance?

WE also got the call for the experience yesterday. I read about it so I was very excited to be asked to join in that experience.  All we had to do was choose a time and day.  Don't know where to go but was told we would received info when on board.  Very happy.  We are in a mini suite.  See you on board.

When you received the call, did Princess come up on your Caller ID or was it marked Potential Spam?  I usually ignore those calls, but may start answering them now if I could get an invitation to this experience!

It is very easy to bid.   Here is a quick rundown.

You just have to pull up your booking, and then at some time around final payment, there will be a Bid For An Upgrade link. Bidding eligibility should open up at about that time.   Also, you should get an email with an invitation to bid, which will show the minimum bid for each upgraded category.  You can use the slider to increase your bid amount.

If you booked thru a TA, or if you are not set to accept emails (promos, PR, from Princess)  then you would want to make sure you are signed up to recieve Princess emails.  So, your TA, or you, should recieve bidding emails.  (I think there are some Big Online travel/cruise agencies that do not participate in this bidding system.)

Once you submit the bid, it is up to Princess to accept or not to accept.  You don't get a chance to turn it down.  You don't get to choose to decline the bid.  If you do not pay for the upgrade after Princess accepts your bid, then they will put you back in a cabin in your current original category.

Many people report getting their bid accepted well before sailing.

They will get an email, and usually, their new cabin assignment shows in their booking before that email comes in.

Some do not get bids accepted until close to sailing.

So, that is the kicker.  You choose a category (or categories) you want to bid on, and Princess can upgrade you to a cabin in that higher category that is anywhere on the ship.   It will be the better category, but you might not think it is a better location.  Or if you decide you don't want to pay the bid for the upgrade, you might not get your current, original cabin back.

You can look at your cruise on Princess website, like you are booking another cabin, and you can see how many cabins are unsold.  If a lot of cabins are still available, you have a better chance of getting the upgrade at the minimum bid shown to you.

Thanks for the wonderfully detailed information @Wishing on a star.  I am booked on Discovery for March 18, 2023. I've already paid in full but can't find the "Bind for an Upgrade" link that you mention.  Can you please tell me where to find that?  Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

  5. We are looking to cruise on the Reflection next year and are trying to decide between 1120 and 9237.

We are traveling with two teenagers and are wondering about bedding situation. It looks like 9237 has an upper berth - does anyone know if that is located above the bed or above the sofa? And for 1120, will the sofabed sleep two teenagers? It looks like there is no pullman in that room.

In regards to the balcony on each of these - I know they are larger, but do you still get a lot of sunlight? I don't want to feel claustrophobic. And do the lifeboats below distract from the view? If so, I may go with a smaller, aft balcony instead. Thanks for any help (and photos) you can provide!
