Grab a book such as Alaska by Cruiseship by Anne Vipond or read extensively on each port. They are different and offer different shore excursions. Also look carefully at time in port and make sure you can do the shore excursions you want to. So many people pick a ship with out looking at times in port and then they can't do what they want or pick ports with things they don't want. This is very different than the Caribbean. You want as many ports and glaciers if possible. Not all glaciers are the same. Some pick Glacier Bay as the #1 choice and Endicott Arm as the least desirable. Hubbard can be iced out in May and so can Tracy Arm.

Lots of things to consider before you pick a ship and a cruise line. Pick based on ports, glaciers and times and in port.

Great advice! I have never been to Alaska and have researched each port by watching YouTube videos for each port. Also googling weather info and info I see on the videos. Our first option was the last cruise of the season. Everything I’ve read and watched says May should have better weather. Even if just slightly.

Hi there.  We are also planning a cruise on Royal Caribbean for May 2024.  There are so many itineraries and I am so confused.  What ship are you going on?  I'm thinking either Ovation or Radiance but can't decide.

Hi! We are going on Quantum of the seas leaving May 13 out of Seattle. On my birthday 😊. I prefer the ships that have at least the Promenade or Esplanade? For me Radiance is too small but that’s just my preference. Ovation would be bigger and have more things to do and more restaurants. I picked more on ship, departure port and date. I hope this helps!

  3. Thank you for the replies! We will be on Royal Caribbean so I’m not concerned about dressing up for dinner. I’ve only ever taken Caribbean cruises so I wasn’t sure how cold it would be on the ship. I plan on bringing layers and waterproof items for our excursions.

  4. My husband and I are doing an Alaskan cruise in May of next year. What should we expect as far as weather? Will it be cold on the ship? Should I plan on jeans and sweaters/sweatshirts or is it warmer? I’ve read it’s the driest month in Alaska. I’ve read to wear layers. Any input would be very helpful. I’m so excited!!

Yes...the buffet lunch is included....yes, alcohol is include if you have a drink package.  Yes...there are loungers everywhere!  You don't need to spend a PENNY on Labadee, if you don't want to!

    Great!! Thank you!!

  6. I haven't been to a cruise ship's island in a long time so I have questions. Is the BBQ buffet included? Are drinks included if we have the drink package? Are there chairs for us to sit without renting a cabana? Pretty much, can we have a beach day with lunch and drinks and not have to buy anything??

What if they handed you a Seaface mask when boarding and dictated when the mask had to be worn?

They are up to something we just don't know what.

I would hope that wouldn't happen. I've read several things that could be different because of the virus and I'm fine with that.  The US is starting to open back up and I'm ready to go somewhere! My cruise is out of San Juan to the Caribbean.  As is my November cruise. I can't wait!

If you post your ship and itinerary, someone here may have direct experience.

I'll be on Freedom of the Seas going to Aruba, Curacao,  Bonaire and St. Martin

  9. Is the town in Bonaire walking distance from the cruise port? We were thinking about just walking around and trying a local place for lunch.

    Hello,

My family and I are sailing on the Allure on 5/26/19.  My daughter said she saw an excursion somewhere that involved going to 3 different beaches in St. Martin.  I don't see it on the RC excursion list. Does anyone know of this? Any details and recommendations are welcomed!  I always thought it was better to go on ship excursions, since they will make sure you get back to the ship in plenty of time.  We have always done this on our other cruises, but we are new to RC.

    Thanks,

    Patti

Was it this by any chance? This is showing on my cruise in October.

Okay, so I have no idea if you'll see this since you posted last year, but I am going solo again this October on the Grandeur. I wonder if I should start a "Grandeur solo traveler takeover" thread.

I am seeing it! You should start a Grandeur solo traveler takeover thread 😊 I'm going somewhat solo in October on the Freedom. I'm meeting the people I met on my November cruise 😊 I'm already thinking ahead to next year for going completely solo.

  13. We had a beach excursion booked for Grand Cayman but it was pouring rain and storming 2 hours beforehand. We tried to cancel it and they said we wouldn't get our money back unless they cancelled the excursion. This was 2 hours before though. Try to make a decision early enough to be able to get your money back. Our excursion must have ended up being cancelled because that amount was credited to our account.

Generally on the 1st and last sea day.  On Equinox 7 day sailing I would say Day  3 and 6 on Western Caribbean,  since you only have 2 sea days.   Try downloading the Celebrity App as Equinox is included as ships currently supported.

I checked the menu on a Western Caribbean and they show Lobster on day 6.

Thank you! Day 6 on our cruise is Valentine's Day but not a sea day. I have the Celebrity app and saw the menu for day 6. I read that for Valentine's Day there might be a special menu including filet mignon.  Does anyone know if that's true? Or should that show on the menu on the app?

It is about 1/2 mile/ten minute walk.  Just walk east on Front Street which deadends at the historic seaport boardwalk.  Follow the boardwalk around to Schooner Wharf.  You will pass the White Tarpon on the way along the boardwalk which opens at 8 and has much better food than Schooner Wharf if you are also looking for breakfast.

    Thank you!
