  1. I love Hilo. Looks like old Hawaii. The Pacific Tsunami Museum is very good, and just walking around looking at the architecture can be very pleasant.

  2. I think you mean two years and ten months? My understanding of kids' clubs is that they will not admit children under the advertised age, no matter their potty-training status, and since his date of birth is included in the booking information you can't sneak him in as older than he actually is.

  3. Most countries don't allow part of their country to be removed from it's shores. Can you imagine if EVERYONE took part of an ecosystem home with them?

If you want a shell, buy it in a gift store. Don't take sand or shells, or rocks off the island they are on.

The shell leaves its environment and the country no matter who picks it up. It does the same damage to the ecosystem.

  4. I've never been motion sick and sailed in some pretty rough conditions both on cruises and otherwise.

What is perplexing is why people who are predisposed to motion sickness go on cruises in the first place. You see all kinds of them on board with their patches, wristbands and other magic amulets.

Where is the enjoyment in a vacation where you need to be doped up on OTC or even prescription medications before you depart or live in constant dread of dark clouds on the horizon?

I bet you're fun at parties. What an incredibly condescending post. Taking anti-motion sickness medications is not being "doped up", and who said anything about a "constant dread of dark clouds on the horizon"? Those of us who are prone to motion sickness go on cruises because we want to. Good grief.

To correct some misinformation in this resurrected thread, motion while driving is NOT the same as motion while at sea, sometimes motion sickness can ONLY be corrected with medication, and dimenhydrinate does NOT break down to diphenhydramine. It CONTAINS diphenhydramine.

To answer the original question, the scopolamine patch works great for me, with no side effects, and no "doping up".

  5. I think I am the only one in the world that HATES the Harry Potter books. I'm sooooooo alone.

No you're not! LOL. I liked the first four, but the last ones were just too tedious. It was like Rowling was being paid by the word. I actually gave my entire series away, and I hardly EVER give books away.

I have so many books it's ridiculous. I hardly ever read fiction except when I travel, so I can leave the books behind at the hotel or on the ship. Otherwise it's mostly books on World War II. I reread the Little House series every couple of years, I guess those count as historical fiction.

  6. Honestly, I would avoid St. Thomas if you can. There are some beautiful beaches (particularly if you take the ferry to St. John) but the shopping is, IMO, very over-rated. The vendors are pushy and the bargains are often not bargains. If you do go with the idea of purchasing something like a camera or jewelry, do lots of research first to be sure you are getting a good deal. St. Croix is worth a visit if you can find a cruise that stops there.

I love St. Kitts. Lots to do...Brimstone Hill fortress, Caribelle Batik and the surrounding gardens, and the sugar train...great way to see the island. There are also some good shops in Basseterre. St. Maarten is fun especially if you like planes; Maho Beach is great.

Barbados is beautiful and very interesting. Lots of history and lots to see. Antigua has English Harbour, which is worth a visit. The British Virgin Islands are beautiful as well, especially Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

Fort Lauderdale is an easy airport to use and very close to the port, too.

Others will disagree but I'm not really a fan of the ABC islands. At least Aruba and Curacao, the two I've been to. Some of the beaches are beautiful, but most Caribbean islands have beautiful beaches, and if you have limited time, the number of sea days to get there and back will take up a lot of that time.

Please let us know what itinerary you choose!

  7. BHelicopter evacuations are actually quite rare (which is why the ghouls on here start a thread to morbidly speculate on the unfortunate person's condition whenever one happens) as such a stressful ride substantially decreases the survival rate even when compared to a slower sea evacuation.

LOL @ "ghouls". Do you have any objective data showing that the helicopter ride "substantially decreases the survival rate"? And if it IS substantially decreased, perhaps that is more a function of the severity of the problem requiring the helicopter, than the ride itself.
