  1. I just did a search for that cruise on RCI site and ************ site and couldn't find an interior for anything cheaper than 700. Maybe they've changed it back..

  3. Did 150 CP on Oasis and wasn't Wowed at all. By far the best meal we had on that ship was at the Chef's Table. We also ate in Giovanni's, Chops, Vintages, Izumi, and Solarium Bistro-- all of which were excellent.

The biggest let down was 150CP...our waiter was very rushed, didn't really explain much to us and the food/menu items were not very appealing. The food was just okay compared to the other venues we dined in. The main disappointment was the dessert which was disgusting and literally put a bad taste in my mouth for this place.

We purchased the CP Dining Package so it was a good value, but next time I would skip 150.

  4. Thanks Carol! Did they say if it came with a galley tour? My Dad is a chef wanna be and loves the galley tours.

    BonVoyage

    Dawna

The lunch they offered in Giovanni's Table on both Jewel and Radiance included a Galley Tour. If for some reason this isn't included with the lunch on Freedom, I suggest you ask your Head Waiter to see if your Dad can be included in the Galley Tour they offer to D+/Pinnacle members which is usually on the last sea day.

  5.

You will find RCI's ships to be very EASY to navigate...they are laid out quite well!

The pros (IMO) are the outdoor buffet seating...I like that. Again, IMO, the enclosed Solarium (adult) pool is a con....I like to be able to tan in peace, but you can't tan under glass! The roof is supposed to be retractable, but it's never opened! Oh, well.

Brilliance has lots of glass, so you get great views from almost everywhere...it's a lovely ship.

Get the deck plans and check it out...just to familiarize yourself with the layout.

Can't help with "must-dos"....we vacation to relax, so we don't "do" alot!!!!

Not true... I've cruised the BR twice in the Med and both times the roof was opened. I've also seen the roofs open on Enchantment, Grandeur, Vision and Jewel... so Never say Never!

  6. I've done the Chef's Table on Oasis, Radiance and Splendour and each time the food, wine and service was well worth the charge. Especially if you purchase one of the packages, that also gives you dinners in the other specialty restaurants.

I will say though, that I would not do the Chef's Table again on either the Splendour or the Legend, as the location is in a partitioned section of the MDR and is very noisy. The walls do not do from floor to ceiling and there's openings to the MDR so you could hear all the noise (including the dining room announcements and singing waiters) during BOTH first and second seatings. It was impossible to hold a conversation or to hear the Chef's presentations.

The other ships have a much better set up with the Chef's Table being in a closed off, private room and the experience was much better.

  7. The first night is the standard, fleet wide menu.. typically with the Mojo Pork Chop, Prime Rib etc.

I've been on several different ships for NYE and the menu has varied slightly. It most closely resembles one of the formal night menus with Surf and Turf etc.

On Vision they served us lobster for a 2nd night.

Given the choice, I would pick Portofino for the first night.

  8. With Allure and Oasis I HIGHY RECOMMEND that you pre-reserve your shows online in advance-- especially the Comedy shows as most people waiting in the "stand-by" line never got into the comedy club all week.

If you prefer not to pre-reserve your shows, they will open the doors 15 mins prior to the show for those without reservations, however seating will be very limited and not in the best locations.

  9. Try and get to the MDR for lunch on the seas days. The salad bar is amazing and can easily be a meal in itself.

Be sure to get to know the crew and let them know if you have any special requests.. you'll find that if there's any way they can make something happen, they will.

As others have stated, if you're not blown away by the ship and the service I'd be very surprised.

    Enjoy the Freedom!

  11. Legend and Splendour are the smallest ships in the fleet... even smaller than Majesty. They don't have all the bells and whistles the newer ships have and is more of a "old school" cruise experience.

I was just on Splendour in Europe a few weeks ago and will also be on the 11 night Southern Caribbean on Legend over Christmas and New Years.

This itin is a new one for Legend as she has spent most of her time in Asia and Europe.

  12. I would avoid NCL and the Breakaway for all the reasons previous posted. I'd also like to add that if you're interested in a Balcony cabin, you can expect to find one of the smallest balconies you've ever seen on a ship.. Basically you have to sit sideways rather than looking out to the ocean.

Unless you plan to pay for dinner in the Specialty restaurants, you can expect horrible food. NCL nickle and dimes you for everything. Drinks are more expensive than on RCCL and they use 1 oz measured shots.. no free pour like on RCCL.

Service is hit or miss, but you find the friendly crew you're used to on RCCL.

  13. I've purchased the drink package on 3 different ships and never had any issues described by the OP. The pool servers actually gave us the souvenier glasses, even thought they aren't included in the package.

On my most recent cruise on Splendour, the pool bartenders actually filled up water glasses with Crown Royal for us to take to our cabin and mix our own drinks on the balcony.

We did not tip for each drink purchased, however at the end of the cruise we did give extra tips to those bartenders we most frequented during the week.

  14. Our guide advised that the government has passed a law that only Kuna can be accepted by retailers, restaurants etc. However, he did say that on days when banks are closed (like Sunday when we were there), some may take Euros in Dubrovnik. Our experience was that very few advertised taking Euros, except a few souvenir outlets. All food and drink establishments we visited only took Kuna.

In Split a few of the dining establishments took Euro as well as Kuna.

  15. I appreciate Pete's thorough review, esp. the pictures. I was on the Oct. 19th sailing of the Splendour with my wife, and also my cousin and her husband. My cousin and I celebrated our 60th birthdays while on the cruise.

This is my first post on this board.

Loved the staff, enjoyed the ship - but was disappointed with the food. Small portions, bland and uninspired in general. As Pete said, it's a subjective call. I was unhappy with this aspect of the cruise.

My wife made advance preparations to have my birthday and my cousin's birthday recognized at dinner two separate nights. This never happened, and the ship's staff took no accountability for the oversight. My wife and my cousin's husband visited the Guest Services counter twice to complain and try to get this turned around, to no avail. This was a poor showing as far as I am concerned.

I expect we will cruise again, but likely not with RCI. First impressions are lasting, and this one was not good.

I find that even though you note a special occassion on your reservation, more times than not the ship does not receive this information. I always let our waitstaff know that we have someone celebrating a special occassion and let them know which night we wish to celebrate. In reminding the crew once onboard we've never missed a celebration while onboard.

  16. A great and fair review as always Pete,

We sail on her in two weeks and dock in Turkey so hopeful will not get the extra tax charge? Plus great news on the solarium for us as we like it covered all the time..

I was on the Oct. 12-19th sailing that went to Turkey and we did not incur any additional VAT taxes because Turkey is not (yet) in the EU.
