Thanks for answering my question about the distance to the walls. Just a quick question - what is the cost to walk the walls and do they only take Kunas? Thanks
Susan
The cost is 150 Kuna per person. They will accept Croatian Kuna cash, no foreign currency and credit/debit cards - yes.

With no traffic, it is only about 10 minutes from the Gruz harbor to the Pile gate entrance to the old town. You will enter thru the archway to the old town and the ticket counter is just across from the Onofrio fountain. Buy your tickets and up the 87 steps to the top of the wall. There is a small rest spot about half way up, enjoy the views they are fantastic.

Check with your ship, they will tell you what time you are expected to be back on board. Normally with a 1pm departure, you should be back no later than 12N. You will need to take a taxi and not rely on public transportation. Also how many other ships arriving on your date, how many people wandering about the town. The harbor is not far, but waiting for a taxi could push your time. You should decide if you want to leave the tour slightly earlier.

The walls close down at 1830 on 01 September. If you can get up there before they begin to walk the wall and lock all the gates, go for it. Plan on only walking the sea side, best views are on that side. After you pass the old pier, which we call Porporela, and finish at the Ploce exit. The land side is the beginning of the upward climb to reach the high point at Minceta Tower. Enjoy the walk, total steps is 1,080!

Pack your fall clothing, doubt highly there will be any hot and humid days at the end of October. Bring rain gear and hope that you have a good Indian summer day.
-
We are now considering October to part of high season. More and more visitors are coming later in the season, after the families with children have left. October can be perfect Indian summer weather or we can have wind, rain and cold. Take your pick, you have a 50 50 change of either.

You need to contact Holland America directly, they can answer your question accurately. Shuttle schedules change frequently, last week may not be the same as next month.

I have been using one of Cavtat's many ATM machines for the past 5 years. Never have I been charged a service fee, I am very surprised to hear this.

November was, at one time, our wettest month. You may have typical fall or true winter weather. No one has any idea these days. You will find our historical sites have shorter winter hours. Most of the outdoor restaurants have closed down for our winter hibernation. The streets will be easy to navigate, only a few other tourists at that time.

No you cannot, it is impossible. There are a grand total of 1.080 steps spread throughout. The only way to take up and baby is on your chest or have the hotel find a baby sitter. I hope you find a solution, a stroller can go up but you will spend the entire trip taking it up and down and up and down. Baby on the ship is your best solution.

There are 3 separate companies which service Dubrovnik and Cavtat. Only one has a non stop route, but occasionally someone buys a ticket and asks to dropped off at Mlini or Srebrano. A short 40 minute trip can turn into more than one hour. Just ask first at the ticket stand at the old harbor in Dubrovnik. However again I must say not a good idea with your early cruise ship departure time.

The main promenade, which we call the Stradun, is a slick as newborn bottom. Limestone polished smooth by many years of usage. I recommend your shoes have radial tire soles. Enjoy.
-
You have a departure of 1300, which means your expected arrival on board cannot be past noon. I doubt highly there is enough time to do Cavtat, especially by boat. Do the wall and enjoy the old part of town. Our town has numerous cultural and historical sites to visit, enjoy.

Yes you can easily walk to the Imperial, it is located right there near the bus stop. Make the best of your time here, most sites have limited hours. Last day of October is the beginning of our winter hibernation. Many outdoor venues may not be open, unless they have inside space. Enjoy your limited time here.

The Adriatic normally is not considered a rough sea. That being said, you may want to make your cruise prior to 01 November when we close down for winter hibernation. When our strong winter winds blow, the sea does get choppy.

Our new mayor has been working diligently with CLIA to stagger cruise ship arrivals. Most of the cruise lines seem to end up here during the weekend. Positioning arrivals would begin to help, but warning again. Do not come during high season, July & August.

Of the three choices, Prijeko Palace has the least steps to reach the entrance. The other two will require many steps, both up and down, and be prepared there are no hand rails.

Want to learn more about the city wall, here is what I wrote way back in 2011. Update, the entrance fee today is 150 kuna, credit card accepted, no foreign currency.

It may be busy, but the cable ride only takes 4 minutes and each car can hold up to 32 people. The line does move quickly and once at the top you are free to stay as long as you want. Enjoy a drink at the Panorama or perhaps a snack. July is busy, but it is not that bad.

Your ship will be docked in our main Gruz harbor. There are several car rental companies in the area. I strongly suggest you make a reservation with if you are arriving in high season. Plan your day carefully, exactly how much time spent in Bosnia. Also check with their visa requirements, if you are not on an American passport.

Yes, of course there is a road and you can take a taxi up to the top. Myself, I much prefer the cable car in both directions since the narrow road makes me very nervous. It is only one lane and one must back down if another car is approaching from the top. Once at the top, the views are beyond spectacular, enjoy.

If you are docked in our Gruz harbor, the main bus terminal is a few meters from the exit. Take the Libertas #10 (25 Kuna per person) to Cavtat. Enjoy the waterfront, have a coffee or lunch or sample some of our Dalmatian wine. You can then take the small ferry boat back to Dubrovnik, a very pleasant 40 minute ride. The drop of point for the ferry is the old harbor, just a few from the old part of town. Walk around, buy the tickets and enjoy the views from the wall. Do pace your time, you will need about 2 hours to walk the entire wall, taking a few photos and generally enjoy the views. Have a fun day, but remember to depart Cavtat no later than noon.

Normally the walk can take about 1 hour to walk only the sea side, which is the easiest part. That is only 1/2 half of the entire circuit. A bit over an hour for the land side, it has the vast majority of steps. Including the 3 entrances, the wall has 1,080 steps. Bring water, a sun hat (there is no shade), very good sun screen and walking shoes. Enjoy the views!

Normally, and weather is not anything close to normal, November is our wettest month. Dubrovnik begins to close down on 31 October for winter hibernation. If it were me, I would stay with June.

The cable car, as well as the city, both do accept credit and debit cards.
