  1. Yes there are buses from the harbor to the old part of town. You must pay with Kuna, fare is 15 Kuna per person, and find the bus stop where our local Libertas bus will stop for passengers. It is located on the main road, not within the harbor area. The bus will take you to Pile gate entrance. Of course you may want to use a taxi and share with another couple, cutting your costs. It is far easier and much faster than the bus which does stop often before reaching Pile. Enjoy.

  2. The old part of town is where you should begin. We have many historical and cultural sites you can visit. Walking the wall, taking the cable car up to the mountain top a multitude of things to do during your limited time here. By utilizing our local tourist website you will be able to pick which sites you do not want to miss. I personally always tell guests not to take the ship tour, they just do not do the town justice. A private tour with one of our locally born guides is going to give you an insight which will make your time here memorable. There are many on this site who claim Dubrovnik is a DIY town, but I know they have missed so many hidden gems and never heard about the history of the town. Since I am a local resident the rules of cruise critic forbid me from giving out any specific recommendations. You need to find out what is best for you, keep researching. That being said I can give you our local website which may help you plan your day here. Happy travels.

  3. Most of the larger taxi trunks will accommodate folding wheelchairs. You will be able to enter the old town with ease. There are steps but also an easy walking path taking you directly to the opening. The middle of our main promenade is your best walk, it is flat and easy to navigate. Most of the historical sites have some steps to enter, but at the Rectors Palace they did have a contraption which took the wheelchair and occupant up the steps. Do not know if it will be here next season, so much changes very quickly. If nothing else, you will be able to wander about and enjoy our green market, the small side walks and also use the smaller street which runs parallel to our Stradun. A great place to eat is Taj Mahal, on the flat part of old town. Make reservations it is very small and always very, very busy. Have a great day visiting my beloved retirement home.

  4. Croatia is known for being one of the cleanest countries in Europe. The Adriatic sea is number one in our area. Should you visit here for a holiday, you must decide yourself. That being said, as an American I chose to retire in Dubrovnik, been here now for 9 years. Just this morning I was talking with my neighbor, mentioned how I often forget to lock my front door, I have no fear here. Also can say that I was often very concerned about my surroundings when living in California.

You may enjoy viewing these selection of Croatian photographs.

  5. Would you return to Croatia as a vacation destination in itself? Is it clean? Is it safe (we are seasoned travellers, so I mean beyond the obvious cautions...)? Thank you.

  6. You can google Dubrovnik GOT tours and you will find many companies offerings. I doubt highly you will need to spend an entire day on such a tour, a few hours would be enough. Dubrovnik is a small town and the locations are not that spread out.

We are in port from 1pm to 7pm and would like to visit a sand beach for an hour or two. Is there one within reasonable distance by taxi from the port?

Simple answer is no, we just do not have sand beaches in Dubrovnik. You may want to spend your hour at our Banje beach, it is closest to the old part of town. This will give you an opportunity to enjoy our Adriatic sea and still have time to visit some of our sites.

  7. We are considering a cruise that includes Dubrovnik, Kotor, Taormina, Monte Carlo. Unfortunately, the only available time that fits both our schedule and the cruise schedule is in August. We know it will be quite warm, but what should we expect regarding crowds?

August is very hot and humid here. You will find the old town extremely busy with tourist, most of them cruisers. As a local resident I no longer even visit the town from July until the end of October.

  8. We are arriving in Dubrovnik in August for a day and a half, I'm quite a big game of thrones fan I know that this is the location of kings landing, are there tours available or that you recommended. I was thinking of doing this one day and then the more tourist things the second. Thanks

Sorry I cannot recommend any specific tour company, as a local resident I am forbidden by the cruise critic rules.

  9. Our ship will be in Dubrovnik on May 21 which is a Sunday. Is anything open on a Sunday.....museums, shops, etc. Dubrovniktravelady? Walking the whole wall is out for us......too many steps. Would like to get to the top of Mt. Srd and also have a tour around Dubrovnik.

    Sandy :)

All our historical sites will be open on Sunday. It is the beginning of high season and you will have no problems enjoying our town. The wall is not for everyone, I no longer go up and much rather enjoy the view from the top of Mt. Srd. Many companies offering tours, walking tours of the old town, drive tours which include Mt. Srd and also visits to Cavtat only 20 minutes south. Enjoy!

Our ship will be staying late, till 11 PM

We arrive in the AM hours and would like to do some sightseeing.

Our afternoon plan is to "walk" the walls and explore old town

Any suggestions for the AM hours and having lunch while "out" of the old city.

Also, would like suggestions for dinner, probably in the old city.

Thank you so much in advance for your reply

Unfortunately as a local resident cruise credit does not permit me to give you any specific suggestions for restaurants. You will find more than a few choices and I can tell you to stay off the main promenade and hit the side streets for a better choice and prices.

Many historical sites inside the city wall, ride the cable car up to the top of Mt Srd for the best view, nice stop to rest and enjoy a drink. Please try to find our Rupe Museum, it is filled with our cultural history and a nice cool building to visit during high heat of the day. A short boat trip, 15 minutes, to the island of Lokrum for a swim or just a walk around the island is always a treat. You also have time to take the 45 minute boat trip to Cavtat, a very special town. Consider using the boat down and return by bus, Libertas #10 ends the trip at the Gruz harbor where I assume your ship is docked. You can research your interests by visiting our tourist bureau website, filled with good data. Enjoy your time here, I certainly do every day.

  11. We're in port from 9am-3pm next May - I realise this isn't much time, given we might not be able to disembark until a couple of hours after arriving, and all board time could be as early as 2pm.

Do we have enough time to walk the walls and explore some of the old town?

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

    Lou :)

Your time is limited and you should make the most of it. Take a taxi from the port to Pile (pee-leh) gate entrance. Go up on the wall and walk the sea side which normally takes about one hour with some stops for photos. The half way point is Ploce (plo-cha) entrance, just after you pass the old harbor. From there you can enter the old part of town and enjoy some of our historical sites. Exploring the old town means getting off the main promenade, which we call the Stradun, and looking for some hidden gems. Enjoy your time here.

  12. We intend to take to cab to the cablecar in Dubrovnik from the port. Which is the closest stop of the cabriobus and how far away is this?

I assume we can buy tickets for this bus at any stop?

    Thanks.

No, please do not assume, you cannot buy tickets for Cabrio at any bus stop. You pay on board, the tour guide will collect. I strongly suggest you have cash, 60 Kunas per person. The closest pick up point for Cabrio is at Pile, which is the main entrance to the old town.

  13. Hi Dubrovniktravelady. We took your advice and spent a lovely Sunday afternoon in Cavtat two weeks ago. Wow! what a beautiful coastal drive from Dubrovink to Cavtat. Thanks again for your help.

You are welcome, I love the ride from Dubrovnik to Cavtat by bus just for the views. Weather permitting I will make the trip by small boat, the best time to sit and meditate the beauty of our clean Adriatic. This is a magical place to live...

  14. First, thanks to all for the great advice.

By checking a link on a previous post, I learned our ship (Windsurf) will dock in Oldtown. Is that a good location for walking to the wall or should we get a taxi? Does the advice on entering at the Ploce entrance still stand for a late September arrival?

We want to walk the wall, ride the cable cars, have a nice lunch (least important) and go to the beach.

Can you suggest the order/best way of accomplishing this.

    thanks again.

Windsurf will not dock, you will be tendered in the old town harbor. Just a short boat shuttle from all the cultural and historical sites. If you are going to walk the entire wall, then by all means go up at Ploce gate. As you exit the boat, go thru the arch, turn right and walk up the road and you will find Ploce gate entrance to the wall. The walk can only be done counter clockwise, this means the most difficult (for me) will be the land side with the majority of steps. Once you pass the main entrance, which is named Spas, and not Pile as tourist continue to call it; you will begin the sea side. Our weather has begun to change and we are now experiencing perfect fall temperatures, about 75F, with some rain here and there. Sea temperatures will drop quickly, it is already far too cold for me but I am a wuss. Many choices for lunch, pick a place off the beaten path with some good hidden gems. Enjoy your limited time here....

  15. I want to purchase Kuna before we go. I'm factoring in the cost of the wall for 2 and the cable car for 2. How much more would you suggest for food/souvenirs?

It depends on what you will be eating. Fresh fish is sold by the kilo, so a 2 kilo fish can cost about 200 Kuna. Pizza is inexpensive, cost is about 60 to 70 Kuna and they are small and enough for one person. Why do you just pick a restaurant and pay with a credit card. Also FYI, you can use a credit/debit card on both the cable car and city wall.

  16. Interesting information about bus and boat trip to Cavtat. We have been to Dubrovnik many times, including before your terrible war. On our more recent trips we have had no problem using Euros, even for a short boat trip around the islands from the harbour. Is this still possible or should we change money into Kuna. We are on Viking Sea and they already include a tour to and from the town.

The legal currency of Croatia is Kuna. Some vendors will accept Euros, but they will give a poor exchange rate and any change will be returned in Kuna. It is in your best interest to obtain Kuna from any of our many ATM machines. Both the Cavtat boat and bus will only accept Kunas, if visiting our area may be of interest to you.

  17. I will be arriving in 2 days on the rhapsody of the How long does it take to walk the full circle? What is the exit for cable car? If only doing part is it better to do sea side or city side? Thanks!

Has anyone heard of the restaurant buza malabuza? Know how to get there? Heard you could jump into ocean. How safe is it? Heard if you didn't jump far enough you hit the rocks.....

I have been told by some that the entire wall can be walked in one hour if you do not stop for the views or photos. If you want to walk only the sea side, then you must enter at the main entrance closest to Pile gate. The walk can only be done counter clockwise and again it depends on how long it take is entirely up to you and how fast you walk. There are many steps up there and you will be walking up and down often.

Exit from where to the cable car???

There is no restaurant called mala Buza, translated it means small hole. Buza is a bar only, no food, and you can see it from the walls. Yes you can be very seriously injured if you jump. Every season we have several people hurt badly making the jump and yes you can hit the rocks. Just google the young Australian girl who fell, face first facing the rocks, and her many surgeries. And finally we are not located on any ocean, but our body of water is the Adriatic Sea.
