  1. I agree with you, the ship shuttle bus would be the better option. While we do have a few larger mini vans, they are normally reserved prior and waiting at the dock. Use the ship shuttle and spend your time in the old town. We are experiencing very high heat and high humidity with August expected to be worse. Sun hat, sun screen and water bottles are necessary. You can refill your bottle at our Onofrio fountain with cool clean water coming from the ancient Roman aqueduct. Enjoy!

  2. Hi Dubrovniktravelady

Can you advise on roughly how many Kuna might be needed for a snack and coffee?

I presume shops selling anything more expensive would take credit cards, like the Walls and Cable Car, but I think I read somewhere that smaller businesses tend not to have that facility.

    Thanks

Please do not assume, many shops and restaurants do take credit cards. That being said it is always best to ask before sitting down and ordering. Cost of coffee and snacks, that depends on where you are. Gradska Kavana is the most expensive, but the views and the krempita are worth it. Coffee can cost about 20 Kuna and I would pay any price for the krempita there! Hit one of the small spots on the side streets and coffee is 10 Kuna...take out 100 Kuna and hope you have enough, you can always hit the ATM again.

  3. Thanks soooo much for the info, glad I asked re Cavtat, as We would have been dissapointed to get there with no knowledge of the winter closing. So let me ask you this . Does that also go for Dubrovnik? Will all things be closed there to? Thanks for your time....Joan.

Dubrovnik will begin to close down on your arrival weekend, first of November is the magic date. The cultural and historical site, wall and cable car will be open with limited hours. There will be some restaurants and shops open, again limited hours, and not a large number. Locals have been working, 7 days a week, since the season opened at Easter. They are exhausted and everyone is looking forward to winter hibernation. Two weeks earlier would be a much better time to visit, my own personal thought.

  4. Hi Dubrovniktravelady we will be in Dubrovnik in August are their taxis at the port? we are a family of 4 the shuttle bus is about $15 each return wondered if it would be quicker and cheaper jumping in a taxi, the other question is we are booked on a game of thrones tour 1st thing in the morning just wondering if in your opinon if we would have time to do the wall and cable car i am so excited to visit Croatia.

Good I am pleased to hear you are excited, Croatia is a beautiful country. Yes there are taxis waiting at the harbor to take your family to the old part of town. The fare is 75 Kuna or 10 Euros, but at this point in time I suggest you have only Kunas.

  5. Hi, we will be in Dubrovnik on the 30 th Oct and are thinking of taking the RCL excursion to Cavet and we will have 3 hrs on our own, which sounds so nice and Unrushed to me!!

So any ideas where to have lunch , local food, not American style! Also is the shopping good for souvenirs and are they reasonable.

My husband likes to try local beers at each port , but maybe they only make wine. Hope to pick your brains on this. .......Joan.

I am assuming that you mean Cavtat, about 20 kilometers south of Dubrovnik. Unfortunately your arrival date is rather late in the season and you may find that most of the waterfront shops and restaurants have closed down for our winter hibernation. You may want to see if they have any excursions which include Cavtat and Konavle area, perhaps wine tasting. This year 30 October is the last Sunday of the month, perfect timing to close down. During winter Cavtat is lovely for those of us who live here, a small ghost town.

  6. Hi,

I'm arriving on the Jade on 25 September (2-9pm) and I'm probably going to be exploring on my own as, regrettably, none of NCL or Viator's tours cover both the Cable Car and the City Walls.

From looking at opening hours, it looks like it would be best to do the walls first (about 90mins?) and then do the cable car.

Does that sound like a sensible way to do things? Am I likely to have any spare time to do anything else?

Are there also any audio tours on the walls? Or signs to point out things of particular interest?

    I appreciate any advice - quite a nervous/anxious traveller!

    Cheers

Please do not be anxious or nervous. Dubrovnik, old town, is a small area and you will have more than enough time to enjoy the city wall and cable car. The ship shuttle bus, taxi or local bus will drop you at our far western entrance which we call Pile (pee-leh) gate. Our Dubrovnik tourist bureau has an office there where you can pick up a detailed map and obtain accurate information regarding our historical and cultural sites. Some prior research may help you decide which sites interest you and do not want to miss.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to post. Hope this helps you.

  7. Hello there young lady :). Am taking the opportunity to jump in here and say that DW and I really enjoyed meeting you back in April. Hope all is well and you are enjoying the summer weather.

    Hank

Thank you, I had such a wonderful day with you both and was sorry to see it end. I so enjoy spending time with guests getting to speak English again. If and when your next cruise stops here, let me know I will show you Cavtat.

  8. We will arrive in October on the vision of the seas.

Since buses donot seem to accept Euro, is there an ATM near the port to get

    local money?

Will cabs accept either Euros or creditcard?

Yes there are ATM machines at the Gruz Harbor. Taxi drivers will accept Euros but no credit cards. Do keep in mind that our city wall and cable car do accept credit cards, NO foreign currency. Do inquire prior to making purchases at smaller type shops, also some restaurants do not accept credit cards nor foreign currency. Ask first is your best option.

  9. We want to go to the Grgich winery in Trstenik, which is about an hour and a half from Dubrovnik.. Is there a car rental agency near the port? Cruise 11/11/17 Pacific Princess

Absolutely there are car rental agencies at the harbor. However it would be wise for you to book something prior and request delivery to your ship/dock. Also may I suggest you write to Grigic Winery to see if they have finished repairing from the devastating wild fire. Our winery here is nothing compared to what they have in Napa, so expect very simple and no extras. The wine, however, is as always outstanding!

  10. Basically your research is good with a few exceptions. Do NOT enter the old town by Buza gate unless you are able to walk many, many steps to reach the main part of town. After exiting the cable car, walk down to the road next to the wall, turn left and continue to the Ploce gate entrance - no steps and easier walk.

Definitely take a dip in the Adriatic Sea, water temperature now is about 20C. The SEA is not an ocean and it is normally a cooler body of water, never getting too warm.

I love the Cabrio bus and always make sure to ride it at least once in high season. It does stop twice, first at the Tudman bridge in the Gruz harbor. Second on the far eastern side, high above the town at the viewpoint. The hand held head phones have 10 different languages and are very informative.

All my experiences are very personal having lived here for the past 8 plus years. Enjoy your time here, many cultural sites to visit and a beautiful town.

  11. Hi

I'm looking for information about private tours or DIY in Rijeka, Croatia. Our cruise is calling into this port in June 2017 and will be there from9am to 6pm.

Any information on "must see" and what is possible to do within that timeframe would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Cheers

    Heather

It has been many years since I have been to Rijeka, but you can find very good information from the following:

  12. How much does it cost in Kuna to walk the wall and ride the cable car?

This season the cost of the city wall is at 120 Kuna, approximately $18, per person. The cable car is also priced at 120 Kuna and both accept credit cards. Our average exchange rate here has been running about $1.00 is 6.5 Kuna at the ATM machines. Going inside the bank the rate is lower and they also have a service fee. The ATM machines lowest rate is 100 Kuna, which may be on the low side for gelato and souvenirs.

We like to walk, bike, swim, scrool the old towns, forts, visit churches, eat local cuisine .

How is weather mid July ?

Thank you in advance for any info and opinions !

Weather in July is normally hot and humid and you may experience a summer thunderstorm. Our Dubrovnik tourist bureau has excellent information regarding our historical sites. You can choose the sites which interest you and your family. So much to see on a short visit, enjoy your time here.

  14. My cruise is in August and the ship doesn't leave port until 10pm.

I really want to do a tour of the wall but Thomson don't offer an excursion on that day.

How much time should I allow ? What is the best way to do it? This is my first solo cruise and so I want to be sure that I make the most of my time in Dubrovnik !

    Thank you.

Thompson is always docked at our Gruz harbor. You need to check with your cruise line if they are offering a shuttle bus to the old town and the cost. You can catch our local Libertas bus from the port to old town, 1A, 1B, are the best choices. Make sure you have local currency, the bus fare is 15 Kuna and NO foreign currency accepted. Entrance to the wall is 120 Kuna only and credit cards are accepted. Enjoy

Many very good private tour companies here in the old town. Please just do your research. Walking the wall, with a guide and taking photos, should take about 2 hours or just slightly more. Your arrival in August is at the height of the season, heat and humidity. Make sure you have water, sun hat and lots of good sun screen. The opening hours this year are only from 8am to 6pm daily, cost is 120 Kuna. No foreign currency and they do accept credit cards. Enjoy

  16. Hello,

My cruise is in October. With that said I am a avid watcher of Game of Thrones and I understand there are a few tour groups that offer tours for this purpose, but is there a way to do this ON YOUR OWN?? or do you recommend a tour.

Please feel free to suggest any other options...

    Thanks,

    Sulma

I have always recommended hiring a private guide. You will experience more of our history and culture. Any guide can point out where GOT is filmed, there are only 3 or 4 special areas. You can do it on your own, your choice, since that is how most post about Dubrovnik. Interesting that I have now lived here for more than 8 years and am still finding hidden gems. Up to you how you want to spend your limited time here.

  17. Thanks. For walking the sea side, do you think it's better to enter at Pile and walk around to Placa, or is it better to go in the other direction from Placa to Pile?

The only direction is counter clockwise, therefore you must enter at Pile. Enjoy the views, take lots of photos and remember to caption them with more than just one word - Dubrovnik.

  18. I know Croatia has a different currency, but will local places accept dollars or euro's or must to convert your money??

Yes Croatian Kuna is our legal currency. It is not very likely you will find any vendors who will accept dollars. Some will take Euros but the exchange rate will be very poor to you. I highly recommend that you utilize one of our many ATM machines to obtain Kuna or use your credit card for any major purchases.

  19. Is it possible to do the seaside portion of the wall. Then maybe lunch at the Panorama cafe ( are reservations needed) then cable car. Do a little shopping in the market then out to the Buza Bar for a drink before getting back to the ship. We are in port from 7 am till 5 pm. Is the wAll tickets good for all day? And are we leaving ourselves enough time for everything? Thanks

The ticket is good for one visit to the wall, take as long as you need to walk it. Yes you can do the sea side only, going up at the main entrance nearest to Pile gate. Exit at Ploce gate and walk up to the cable car entrance, not far. You may want to contact the restaurant to see if you need reservations, but most do not spend a long time up there. You may not need too much time for shopping, perhaps some locally made items such as our lavender packets or dried figs or candied orange peels. Getting a table at Buza may be difficult, again depending how many ships in port and how many tourists. Yes I do believe you have enough time, but if you need to cut anything may I suggest Buza, too expensive and a major tourist trap.

  20. We will spend 1 day in Dubrovnik on an upcoming cruise. I have read that there are still many places that do not accept Euros.

Will taxis that pick up at the dock accept Euros now?

Do restaurants and cafes accept credit cards - especially American Express? Euros? Or should I plan on paying in local currency? Average price for a lunch for 2 people?

How many Kunas will we (2 adults) need to ride cable car and to walk the wall?

If anyone has done this port recently, any advice on how many dollars we should change into Kunas?

    Thanks so much!

Yes taxi drivers will accept Euros as well as many restaurants and shops. That being said you will not be getting a good exchange rate. The wall and cable car both accept credit cards, use them for the entrance fee. This year the wall will cost 120 Kuna per person, cable car is still showing 2015 price of 108 Kuna. Most restaurants will accept American Express, but do ask before sitting down. Average price for a meal, depends on what you choose. Fresh fish is always expensive and prices is per kilo, so ask price and weight. If you decide to exchange dollars into kuna, use any of our ATM machines as you will get the best rate there. I have lived here for eight years and still maintain my American bank account. After much trial and many errors I found using my debit card at the ATM machine will always give me the best rate. My bank charges $5.00 transaction fee, but it still is less than going inside the same bank and paying all their fees. Enjoy your time here.
