  1. We booked with Courtney for our trip in October.

I asked for something laid back and off the beaten path and we are doing the following:

    Recommended Tour

    ********* Great House $14

    Rose Hall Great House $20

Visit an 250 years old church

Visit one of our famous Jerk Sauce Factory

    Visit an old Town

Take a Trip in the mountains and community

Visit a beach $5, lunch and shopping

The Cost for this Tour is $30pp (private)

How was this tour? My husband & I have done the standard tour sites a number of times & this sounded different.

  2. ....

Arriving that late, I wouldn't pay for a day pass... there are public beaches you can use for a couple of hours.

Trying to find something for my son, GF & 2 1/2 yr old. Will be in Nassau in 1 1/2 wks on Dream, which I believe departs at 2:00 p.m. They were thinking Hilton day pass but I don't see where that is worth given the amt. of time.

Is there a public beach that they could walk to from the ship that you would recommend or do they have to head over to Paradise Island? Trying to keep things easy since traveling with a little one.

  3. So the car just smashes through the gate which did not raise because the car had no Sun Pass and the coins were blocked?

Nothing so dramatic as smashing through a gate - lol. The toll we had a problem with when using a rental car had a red/green light. We paid but light never changed, no one around to assist & at 4:00 a.m. we had to make a decision to go thru & hope for the best rather than sit and wait for help that might not arrive.

Must say I can't even think the last time I traveled on a toll road with a gate, always a red/green light or the overhead dectectors that don't require any stopping. Envisioning the whole action movie scene did put a smile on my face : )

  4. Approx. how much in tolls from Port Canaveral to Orlando International? Anyone recall if there are unmanned toll booths?

It may be worth it for me to just pay Enterprise the $2. daily fee plus tolls. However, I'm envisioning driving thru a toll & thinking I'm good, but then getting hit with a $25. violation fee since I don't believe you register for anything at time of rental to get that $2. fee option.

I did have a problem once on toll road going into Orlando airport - threw coins in basket, no toll person, but was billed for toll & violation fee. I did get it resolved, I think by the rental company who said it happens often, but who wants the hassle!

  5. Thanks LynneL....we're scheduled for our October stopover and its good to know he's as good as he sounded in his e-mails & the phone call I made to confirm. We have 6 so far, but I suspect it won't be a problem to get 8. We have a couple gentlemen who need to sit up front or in an aisle. He said the seating arranging was 4 rows of 3? How was the van with 8?

We actually had 10 in the van. Eight from our group & a nice couple that asked to join us. Very comfortable. Yes, 4 rows of 3. If I remember correctly, Rows 2 & 3 were two seats by one window, little aisle in the middle then a single seat by the window on the other side of van. This way those that sat all the way in the back didn't have a difficult time getting back here, as is sometimes the case with vans.

  6. FYI - Duke is booked; Dennis Holis is off the Island & we are waiting to hear from Colin again. I also am looking into this firm....http://www.gartours.com/html/destinations.html. Their buses hold up to 14. We could have a private tour for $10/hr/person. Has anyone used or heard of them. Anybody else interested?

    Judy

Just came back from Bermuda & used GAR Tours. George drove us and was great. He was informative, well-spoken, and just an overall nice gentleman. He has a van, not a bus. Clean & good air-conditioning, which was needed with the brutal humidity. We had 10 people plus George so everyone was comfortable.

The $10/hr/pp needs a minimum amt. of people, per site: 1-6 $60. per hour, each add'l person over the 6th is $10./hr/pp. George said he likes a min. of 7 people since the van is large. We had 8 in my group of family/friends but there were 2 people as he picked us up that asked about touring with him. George asked us if we minded if they joined our group & we said fine. There was no pressure on us to add them since we had a private tour, and he was clear about that, but I knew it would provide this couple with a more reasonable option than hiring a cab at $40. an hr. for 2 people. They turned out to be a lovely couple who added to the enjoyment of our day & hopefully they had fun with us. If you don't have the min. amt. of people needed, maybe write to him and ask if there is anyone else that has inquired & only has a small amt. of people that you can join in on tour. Believe me, I sent the man a lot of e-mails with questions - lol. He was always prompt & pleasant.

We did a 4 hr. tour that started at the Dockyard. He picked us up exactly on time, covered all the island with stops getting out at lighthouse (time for those that wanted to climb), time at a little church where he discussed the bldg. style & at our request since in our conversation with him he mentioned he was a religious man we asked him to lead us in a prayer for a friend having surgery that day. He did so with such beautiful words that it really provided comfort. George also gave time to walk down by Warwick Long Bay (I believe name - a beautiful cove area next to Horseshoe Beach).

We ended tour in St. George (our request to do that) & took the ferry back after a little browsing & lunch.

I'd definately recommend George. My e-mail contact with him was at alratteray@logic.bm

He answered all e-mails very promptly. Tell him Lynne & her group recommended him & say Hi!

  7. I would try Amtrak. Been on it a few times. It's a long ride, but you can get up and move around. And it beats driving.

Been on LOTS of times - husband works for them : ) Couldn't leave on a Friday after work though to get to ship on Saturday using AMTRAK. But we are at least set for flying down. The train may become an option for heading home though if the fares for the return are ridiculous.

My post title should have read, "MAY have to cancel Epic..." though I wrote in a moment of despair thinking if Delta was charging so much the others are not going to be drastically different. I was wrong & hope I'm proved wrong for the return flight!

These boards are filled with many, many nice people offering positive, supportive & helpful information who talked me off the ledge a bit - lol.

  8. I've haven't found in the past number of years that r/t air was cheaper than 2 one-ways. Many years ago, yes but not now.

When booking a round trip the fare is based on the price of the particular flight you pick going to your destination - certain times being more or less than others for that day - and then you select the the flight for your return. They are totaled & that's your price.

If you only purchase the flight in one direction, you are giving the exact same pricing for that portion of your trip.

  9. So you bought 7 one-way tickets?

I'm hoping to fly from Newburgh to FLL or Newark, but will fly JFK if the price is right.

SEE YA ONBOARD!! We just got our school calendar for next year and we're only off Monday-Wednesday, so we have to pull them for Thursday/Friday (and the Friday before since we like to fly a day early in the winter).

Yes, only got 7 one-way for now. Two of the people in that little group are a bit nervous with my decision to do so cause I'm not paying for their trip...my kids (young adults) thrilled cause I treat when they come with us so $$ not a problem - lol.

Thankfully, here we have the whole week off. SEE YA ONBOARD TOO!!! and maybe the week after cruise if we all don't get good fares to take us home - lol.

  10. I'm in the same boat as you. Literally. We are from LI and would like to fly to MIA for the Epic that week. But if the fares are not reasonable, we will drive down and fly back. I would never do Amtrak back again. Did it 2 years ago and it was awful. I would rather drive through the night. My oldest will have his license in a few months so he could share some of the driving with me and DW. Maybe even go straight through...:o

Just found American for $134. for JFK to Miami! Got 7 tickets all at this price. You may want to look into it & you could fly down & drive back.

We started to consider doing a different vacation but I was disappointed. We're just hoping the return is decent. Hope your's works out well too.

  11. Thanks for all the suggestions.

We are going to hold off on any cancelling until it gets closer & more airlines post their fares to make it more competative. I'm not going to book any air until I can get a round trip ticket & know the full cost for anyone. In the past, I didn't worry the return could be way more so I would book one way as it came up & do return when posted. We really don't want to pay over $400. r/t since we are paying for all our immed. familiy's costs. I'm just preparing for the worst (cancellation of cruise) because I can't imagine it dropping drastically. Though you never know. As someone mentioned, the world events effect all this and maybe if things simmer down so may the fares.

I'm not locked into using Delta, have some points but not enough to make that a deal breaker. We would like to use JFK cause its the closest & easiest for us to get to, especially since we're heading out after work on the Friday & time is limited.

I did realize later I had the date mixed up in posting. I checked the correct day for fares. I'm planning something else for a Friday the 13th & had that on my mind. We'd be leaving on Fri. 2/15 & sailing 2/16 - 2/23.

We did check into the train price & it was good. About $135. each way. We've taken it quite a few times to Florida when my kids were young. Miami is a 30 hr. train ride if you have no delays, which on a trip that long there almost always is something that throws you off schedule. Unfortunately, the schools we work for would not take kindly to us taking off the day before a vacation.

Well, I'm going to expect the worst & hope for the best! Thanks again folks for giving some hopeful light to the situation!!

  12. Sailed the Epic a few months ago & LOVED it so much we booked our family & friends for Feb. 2013 - week NY schools closed (some of us have jobs in schools so must go when school's out). Most I've ever paid to go to FL was around $300. round trip. Fuel's high so we figured we may be paying near $400 r/t.

Delta released their fares shortly after midnight for flights on Friday evening, Feb. 13th. $550. ONE WAY to Miami!!! That still leaves the return fare on Sat. 2/21 as an unknown. Come on! Are people really going to pay a grand pp to get to and from Florida?? Then the cost of the cruise?

Guess we'll be cancelling that cruise : (

  13. Try googling Bermuda Tour Bus

Thank you for your response regarding my attempt to get a tour for my group of 8; however, Bermuda Tour Bus is the same company I referred to in my post when I mentioned Unique Vacations. They can accommodate 8 people but charge $75. pp for a 3 hr. tour. While I'd like for us to be in one vehicle, I feel $600. for a 3 hour tour is just more than I care to spend.

This company is also the one someone mentioned using but referred to them by the driver/hostess names of Robin & Judith.

Again, thanks anyway. This whole thread has been a wealth of information!

    1. LynneL. i had already booked the epic. I'm thrilled with my choice as i was in need of a change after sailing only princess before. I love the idea of freestyle and dressing up or not, it suits me perfectly. I take all reviews for what they are and that is someones opinion to which they are entitled. We were quite dissapointed with our last princess cruise. It doesnt mean we had a bad time, quite the contrary, we had a fabulous time but still there were things that we expected based on our previous princess sailings that just were not there. I'll definately sail princess again but for this trip we felt it time to see what else was out there.

I've gone on 28 cruises now & the Epic was my most recent (only my 2nd on NCL). Epic was by far my favorite!!! Loved that ship, the entertainment, found the food great & I had my little granddaughter along so that just the topper to it all! We enjoyed everything & would book it again.

I know what you mean about wanting to see what's out there. I had done so many Carnival cruises I could tell you what I would be choosing on the menu for each night's dinner before I set foot on the ship. Always had great cruises but just too predictable, so we started choosing other lines.

Crown Princess was up there as one of my top cruises but that was 5 years ago so I wonder if I'd feel the same now or if things changed a bit? Oh dear...I may just have to go on another to see - lol.

Have a wonderful time on the Epic Gramma!

  14. . . .

I don't understand what class has to do with anything and like others, I've seen comparable pricing on a variety of lines. My biggest question is why "NCL bashing" seems to be so rampant on the non-NCL sections of these forums? Of course, I also know there is no real answer to that, either!

Agree, but it's not limited to NCL. I'm sure you've seen what is written about Carnival. My thought to this is was I such a classy person when I sailed Cunard, but "Wal-mart crowd" when I sailed Carnival (I must say if Walmart is selling me the same product as the store which is charging more, I'm going to Wal-mart if it works for me! Don't see where there should be pride in overpaying.). Who knows what type of passenger I supposedly was on my NCL cruises.

OP - If after reading various posts & reviews NCL sounds like it could be for you, give it a try. You'll never know for sure until you do.

  15. Had the pleasure of having a tour in Bermuda with Unique Vacations with Judith and Robin. Judith was very knowledgeable about the island and Robin was a super driver as well as being very informative. Their bus/van was very clean and comfortable and could hold 10 in comfort. It is also wheelchair accessible in case anyone needs that. Judith had numerous books with pictures of the island over the years. Willing to go where you want and never felt hurried.

Any other recommendations for tour drivers that can accommodate 8 passengers plus driver? I've been going back through so many posts but all I've read were for small numbers of passengers or splitting up into 2 cars. We want to stay together in one van. I've looked up Unique Vacations but cost seems to be $75. pp, which seemed high to me.

    Thanks if anyone can help.

  16. I never said he lied. I knew the pics wouldnt be free, however, I had no idea it would be as high priced as it is. I also was not told I would have to buy a Package deal I was told I could buy what I liked and then after the shoot I was told it had to be after a package was purchased that I could buy extra of what I liked. And yes it is a warning to people who will think as I did that the sheets would cost around the same line as all the other photos taken on the ship.

I appreciate you recounting your experience. My husband & I saw the offering for this shoot on our last cruise & inquired about it. The sample pictures taken on the beach shoot looked great. We were also under the impression that the pictures would be sold individually. We didn't go with it because we did not have all our family on the cruise.

The warning you gave was warranted...it would have been very disappointing to see terrific pictures of your family & then be put in the position of either shelling out $499. or handing them back & walking away with nothing. Someone else mentioned they were able to get 3 for $150. That seems like a more reasonable approach.

  17. My son & his GF just came off the Carnival Miracle yesterday & did the horseback riding in Grand Turk. They really enjoyed it & after seeing their video I want to do it next time. The ride itself wasn't a "knock your socks off" thing but they said going in the water made it really fun & different.

How old are your children? They said there was a young girl on the horse - looked in the video to be around 8 yrs. old - and they said she was scared in the water. The horses go in pretty deep. I had thought they'd only walk on the shore. The little girl did hold her own thru it all & the guides make everyone put a flotation device around their waist before the water part of the ride. I hear you though with the $300. ride...especially for kids feeling luke warm about it! There is no way my kids would go on any 7:30 a.m. tour, though my husband & I are really early a.m. people

Are you stopping at Grand Cayman on this cruise? If so, as someone else suggested try the swim with the stingrays. We've done that a number of times with Captain Marvin. I think we paid in the $30. or so pp range & that is a real experience!

  18. ....Many people on our current roll call have ordered magnetic door signs from VistaPrint.com - I think we are keeping them in business. ;) And their prices can't be beat (free). :D

I went to VistaPrint's website but the only magnets I saw were business card ones. When I clicked on magnets it showed (1), so it appeared that the business card margets were it. How do you order signs? I'd love to order door decorations for an upcoming family/friends cruise. Thanks.

  19. ...The new Mahogany Bay port is stunning. Carnival owns the port, and will not allow the independents to pick you up in the port (although they can drop you off). We had to walk through the port area and up the hill to meet our guide. Roatan was our favorite port on this cruise and our tour with Ben was well worth the the 10 minute walk from ship to our driver. ....

Can we purchase the $5. chair lift ticket & use that to get you to where you meet the guide? It looks cool & figured we could use it again later once we're dropped off at the ship after the tour.

  20. Glad I tried the steakhouse on the Pride but I was not overly impressed. The food presentation was excellent. Food quality was good to very good but I've had better. As far as atmosphere, on the night we went there were approx. 3 other tables of people in the restaurant. No music anymore. Just didn't grab me sitting in an almost empty restaurant. Don't like noisey but just too quiet for me. Part of it may have had to do with the fact that we had such a exceptional waitress in the dining room who we enjoyed seeing each night.

  22. Famos Amos - the cookie guy. Although it wasn't stated that he was on there to try and push some new clothing line (I'm thinking I remember something like bright colored with watermellon wedge print or some tropical fruit), the CD asked a few times at various activities if anyone ran into him & noticed the clothing Amos was wearing...and that he designed it himself. Maybe a working vac for Amos.
