  1. Alessandro Zanello, 43, the youngest officer ever to be appointed captain at Silversea Cruises, will command the new Silver Muse when it enters service in April.

Capt. Zanello has been working for Silversea since 1999 and has served on all ships in the fleet. Silver Muse will be his second inaugural ship assignment; he was second-in-command for Silver Spirit's 2009 introduction.

In other Silver Muse appointments, the galley will be led by executive chef Anne-Mari Cornelius, who joined Silversea in 2005 and has worked aboard two Silver Whisper world cruises as executive chef. Cornelius will oversee all galley staff and be responsible for maintaining high culinary standards across Silver Muse's eight restaurants.

Cruise director Jimmy Kovel will be in charge of activities and entertainment during the ship's inaugural season. This includes culinary demonstrations and performances by the Voices of Silversea in the Venetian Lounge and the smooth jazz and blues entertainment in the intimate Silver Note restaurant. Kovel has worked for Silversea since 2009, aboard Silver Shadow, Silver Cloud and Silver Wind.

Other key members of the Silver Muse team include Staff Capt. Sergio Topazio, Chief Engineer Michele Barone and Hotel Director Paolo Percivale.

Silver Muse is scheduled to be named in Monaco on April 19.

  2. "We are in a terrace suite. There are two of these right at the front on deck 5. Larger than most of the others cabins on the ship but no private balcony. Instead, the two share a very large terrace at the front of the ship. In theory, anyone could go up there, but so far, no one else has found it. There is a lot of comfortable lounge furniture out there."

Rachel, thanks for your posts. I believe we were in the same terrace cabins on our cruise, and we really enjoyed the extra space and location on the ship.

We were unfortunately on one of the first cruises with Silverseas, and they had several issued that I am glad to see have been resolved. The grill was our favorite eating venue, and the only one we were consistently happy with. It sounds like the main dinning room has had great improvement. You will certainly enjoy the cruise. The island and animals are really special here. Are you going on the Eastern or Western island cruise? We were on the Eastern leg which includes the "older" islands and has much more vegetation than those on the Western side.

Looking forward to you next post.

  3. Good luck! They are not very communicative. Celebrity is a delightful choice for the Galapagos. Going a second time!

I read about that trip. What a shame.

As of tonight, I still have not had any contact from Silversea. I emailed guest relations two days ago. I will give them a little more time, but if I don't hear from them I doubt I will try Silversea again. We have cruised with Crystal, Regent and Seabourn and have not had this type of issue with any other line before. Once we even received an email reply from Seabourn while still on the ship. Silversea, if you are reading any of these posts and want to keep repeat passengers you have to communicate in a timely manner. You can't ignore your customers if you want to stay in business. There are just too many choices out there for you to not reply.

  4. My DW and I recently returned from the Galapagos this past Fall, and had less than a stellar experience on the ship. I have tried to contact Silversea's corporate office through my travel agent with no replay to my concerns after over a month. I have then tried to use the Web site to write a message asking for a contact with the home office, but the site would not let me email anything. I don't know if this has been an existing issue with the Web page or just a glitch, but I would like to know of an email address I could send my original letters to someone who could at least respond. Does anyone know of a contact within the Silversea's corporation that I can ask for an explanation for the less than luxury experience we received? If I have to use snail mail, I would like to at least know of a name that I could address my letter to. Thanks for any help!

  5. The hot bouillon thing is a silversea thing, not a leftover. It is on all the silversea ships, as far as I know. We really looked forward to it on explorer when we were often frozen, returning from a cold zodiac ride. I really like it.

Thank you for that information. This was our first Silversea's cruise, so don't know all the traditions. This is a good tradition.

  6. We don't go until mid Feb. thank heavens. That should give them some time to put their new providers and single set of guests a chance to work. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. It will also be interesting to see what the rep offers you- and whether or not it is a ship wise offer or a personal one. The last short week cruises seem to be the week of the 7th December.

Ontravelbug- someone mentioned having one in their room- broken. And the original descriptions given by Silversea had a Illy in each room, then it was only in the top cabins, now- you obviously didn't and who knows. But if they are not functional then they are just space wasters. But can't you arrange to have the butler deliver coffee to your room? Surely that is not beyond them? Please tell me that is not impossible.

Yes, our butler kept asking what he could do for us. Room service should be no issue. Saying that, we didn't take him up on any room service as we were so busy, that it was just easier to walk to the Grill if we wanted something.

The ship had, what I considered an unusual experience, and that was a 11 AM hot bouillon daily event. We came to enjoy this when we came back from the morning tour. It wasn't well attended, and I am wondering if Silversea will drop it. My guess is that it is a left over from the previous owners.

  7. Thank you for that info- it seems everybody has a different view & opinion about these things. I was really looking forward to my morning coffee on the deck but if you cannot see anything while seated & supposedly now no coffee maker (expresso machine) in room?

You are right there is no coffee maker or expresso machine in the room. However, the Grill is on the same deck as the Terrace suites, so with just a little effort, you can have coffee and a great view. I sent an email to silversea's home office with my concerns on how the cruise was advertised as a "luxury" cruse, but fell short in several areas. Despite all of the minor issues, it was one of our favorite cruises because of the Park Guides and the animals. It is a not to be missed experience. Silversea had the opportunity to make this an over the top experience, but tried to hurry the training and refurbishing schedule. I'll be interested to see their response to my email.

  8. I am going March 1st & we have both Terrace Suites booked (for 4 of us). Originally we were lead to believe we had a shared balcony at front of the boat but found out it is not ours, but a public place reachable via a door between our room? (not one person we spoke to have been able to clarify this). Could you fill me in on the cabin set up & the balcony? Are there larger windows in this cabin? Thanks :)

My DW and I were in terrace cabin 506, and liked the cabin. It seemed more spacious than the veranda cabins next to us. I think that was because of the layout of the room. It appeares square in shape and had a remodeled bathroom. Storage was plentiful. There is an over abundance of dark wood paneling, but that is a matter of personal preferences. You are correct there is a "public" veranda at the aft of the cabin. You will have to exit the cabin and go through two doors to access this area. It is large, and most times no one was there. They had a few lounge chairs, but when you are seated, you can't see much over the solid metal railing. It was a non issue with us, because we were so busy with tours and eating, there wasn't a lot of time to just sit out on the deck to relax. Unless you just have to have your own private veranda, I think it is a much better cabin than the veranda cabins. Let me know if you would like more details.

  9. Hi, we were on the 5th cruise that ended on November 2nd, and agree with your review for the most part. My DW and I had one of the two Terrace suites, which we thought was very nice. The bathroom had been remodeled, and it was very roomy for an Expedition ship. There were the three and four day tour groups on our seven day segment. On the last three days it was more notable as that was when we discovered that over half the ship was getting off, and were being replaced with more tour groups. The new groups tended to stick together which made it difficult to get to know individuals. The Grill was more to our liking for lunch and Dinner. Other than the Grill we thought the food to be acceptable, but nothing to cause us to write home about. Crew worked hard to please, but lacked the training that one would expect on a luxury line (expedition or not). The islands and animals were the real stars here, and don't let any constructive criticism here keep you from booking. The park guides were exceptional, and we enjoyed each morning and afternoon trip. This is not a trip for those that want to sit in a lounge chair. You will have long hikes twice each day, with optional (and free) snorkeling or kayaking in between if you want. Bring your camera and water shoes, and enjoy a once in a lifetime experience.
