Continue operations preparatory to the final rigalleggiamento of the Costa Concordia in the waters of the island of Giglio. Steps are being taken in particular to the leveling of the 5 boxes on the right side should be placed according to design patterns. Exclusive lower 3 pictures taken from a novel position.
Some little delay - There 's a 12-hour delay in the roadmap by technicians to the rigalleggiamento of Concord but it is not technical problems. He explained Nick Sloane, the head of the operation, returning to the harbor at Giglio this morning and stressing that the delay is due to the difficulty of working underwater with chains that weigh tons. "The connection of the chains to the boxes - he said - is taking longer than we hoped, but tonight we should have done. So tomorrow we should start to lower the caissons to the expected level paving the way for the final phase of rigalleggiamento. In fact we were hoping to start tonight, but we have a delay. "
Will not move until Monday - For the Admiral Stephen Tortora, who is the man of the link between the public and the private sector in the operation Concordia, in any case, "things are going well. It is working - he says - to bring in crates starboard position, although it is a bit 'complicated. The objective is to finish tomorrow and start with the floating real, to bring it back to level. " As the day of departure, Dove has confirmed that the Concordia will not move until Monday. "It 'a matter of opportunity with respect to the island, Saturday and Sunday would be very uncomfortable, there is the change of vacationers. The factor that is not yet clear to one hundred percent, and can not be, is that of the weather. It will be what ultimately the factor that will decide, but I do not think that it is the sabbath. 2. Our very own Cruise Critic has a Live Question and Answer with editor Adam Coulter. There are some interesting details at http://live.cruisecritic.com/Event/Cruise_Critic_Live_From_the_Costa_Concordia_Raising
Adam Coulter
Good morning ERLEC. The exact details are as follows: 4 chain and six cables are still being attached to the starboard sponsons S18, S12 and S4; and tensioning chains in starboard sponsons S3/4/12/14 and 18. In addition, 13 of the total starboard sponsons are being 'lowered' into their final position – ahead of the main refloat on Thursday. The portside sponsons are the ones that are welded on.

Here is some underwater footage filmed from beneath the Costa Concordia on July 15, one day after the initial refloat of the shipwreck. In the video, you can clearly see the chains and cables that are wrapped around the hull of vessel, not to mention the fact that, yes, the Costa Concordia is floating once again!
4. From TPP:

    JULY 15
1.00 pm : The underwater preliminary activities related to the beginning of the last phase of the refloating operation of the Concordia are in progress today. Technicians are indeed working to connect and tension the last 4 chains and 6 cables. The wreck is stable position and securely moored.

  5. As I understand it they are now going to fit the chains underneath the hull that secure the sponsons.

I wasn't expecting anymore lifting of CC out of the sea further until these chains are done. Not a clue how long that will take.

After that I thought she was going to be raised deck by deck allowing time for each deck to drain and when CC is at its sailing height she will sail off pulled by two ocean going tugs Blizzard and Resolve Earl.

But there again I have been wrong before.

I must admit I am waiting for the bow to rise out of the water

Here is says that they will be raising the ship to deck 3. http://www.theparbucklingproject.com/article/87/CostaCrociere:_last_hours_to_beginning_of_refloating

  6. While searching for more detail on the refloating, I came across this video of divers repositioning Pinna Nobilis (pen shells to the casual beachcomber) as part of the effort to preserve the environment.

These are some amazing bivalves! I had never seen them before and I have done my fair share of exploring the underwater world. It is no wonder that there are people deeply concerned about protecting this beautiful area.

    More info on Pinna nobilis:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinna_nobilis

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_silk

The bivalve shell is usually 91 cm (3 feet) long, and its shape differs depending on the region it enhabitates. Like all pen shells it is relatively fragile to pollution and shell damage. It attaches itself to rocks using a strong byssus composed of many silk-like threads which used to be made into cloth.

This species is the origin of sea silk, which was made from the byssus of the animal.

The cloth produced from these filaments can be woven even finer than silk, and is extremely light and warm . . .

In recent years, Pinna nobilis has become threatened with extinction, due in part to fishing, incidental killing by trawling and anchoring, and the decline in seagrass fields; pollution kills eggs, larvae, and adult mussels. The noble pen shell has been listed as an endangered species in the Mediterranean Sea.

I've been wrong before, but when I flew to Rome from London, I'm pretty sure it was +1. My son and granddaughter live in Cambridge, UK, so I have the London clock on my computer and it is currently 0722 there. Maybe Daylight Savings time differences????

  8. I thought it was a mixture of my technology and old age (me not the laptop) Thank goodness I'm not on my own.

I totally agree with you iMicki, its so very sad to see such a lovely ship in this state.

How many of you will be watching in the morning??

I will be watching on Florida time. Want to see as much of this operation as possible over the following days. It is an engineering marvel not to be missed.

  9. Press Release from the Parbuckling Project:

    http://www.theparbucklingproject.com/article/87/CostaCrociere:_last_hours_to_beginning_of_refloating

The refloating operation is planned to start at 6 am on Monday, July 14. During the first stage, the Concordia will be refloated about 2 meters up off the platforms and moved 30 meters towards the east with the assistance of tugs. The ship will then be securely moored and technicians will be able to complete the attachment and tensioning of the last cables and chains, and to lower the starboard sponsons to their final position. The actual refloating will then begin, raising the ship one deck at a time, from deck 6 to deck 3. The whole operation is expected to take about 6 or 7 days to complete. The departure of the Concordia from Giglio is currently scheduled for July 21.

  10. I have been gathering some links related to the refloating scheduled for Monday for a Captain friend of mine and thought I should share them here, so . . . .
