I love that "gritty" soap.....it was the only toiletry I liked.

Agree, love that soap! It was just available on the Edge a few weeks ago. My husband asked me if I could find that type for him at home lol.

To each its own, and no product can satisfy 100% of the people 100% of the time. We found Oceania and Azamara to be in a different league, but it doesn't mean we won't sail Celebrity or Princess, given the right price and itinerary.

We were on Azamara last year and really enjoyed many things. We were able to see some beautiful ports in Croatia like Split and Hvar which bigger lines don't usually get to. We had to tender to them but it was very easy. We loved the ship, the comfy cushioned lounge chairs at the pools, like Celebrity had back in the day, and the special evening event where everyone goes off the ship to a set destination. We thought the food was okay, not a lot of choices. We would be looking for a late night snack only to find a little table set up with cheese slices and cookies. No pizza at midnight lol. We would dance in the lounge every night to the dj's same songs with the same 20 people who would join us. The entertainment that they brought on board was boring and may have appealed to a much older crowd. For example, a long retired female opera singer who sang in the lounge. It was the summer so there were some younger people on board and all felt the same. I do remember being on a small luxury boat in Tahiti where they brought on local Polynesian dancers and that was very nice. I guess it depends what you are looking for but I find Celebrity to be a nice in between and now with the Edge class, it really is something special. The only negative that I could see is the amount of kids I have seen  since they are now marketing towards a younger class. We did not enjoy our time in the pool as much as we were constantly being splashed. First world problems lol.

Honestly, this was just an educated guest. But here are some examples:

28 night cruise on Oceania at 46k CAD - https://www.oceaniacruises.com/grand-voyage-cruises/rome-to-reykjavik-RVA190814A/?sr=%2Fcruise-finder%2F%23ships%3DMNA%2CRVA%23cruiseLengths%3DOverTwentyTwo

31 night cruise on Oceania at 36k CAD - https://www.oceaniacruises.com/grand-voyage-cruises/buenos-aires-to-miami-MNA210309A/?sr=%2Fcruise-finder%2F%23ships%3DMNA%2CRVA%23cruiseLengths%3DOverTwentyTwo

    33 night on Searborn at 66k CAD - https://www.seabourn.com/en_US/find-a-cruise/P9H33A/7971A.html

    32 nights on Silversea at 58k CAD - https://www.silversea.com/destinations/northern-europe-british-isles-cruise/stockholm-to-rome-civitavecchia-c5926.html

So I really wasn't too far.

My original question wasn't why would someone spend $120k CAD on a cruise, or how can people afford it. It's their money, and everyone spends it as they see fit. I realize there are a lot of rich people who can easily afford to spend that kind of money on vacation.

My question was why someone who is willing and can afford to spend that kind pf money on a cruise, would spend it on a 11 night cruise on a mass market ship, when they can spend a similar amount on a luxury ship and 3-4 times duration. With all due respect to Celebrity suites, this is still Celebrity - even suite passengers have to stand in line to get in and out the ship, wait for overcrowded elevators, spend time in overcrowded shops etc. And if they don't want the "big ship amenities" - then what's the point to be on a big ship to begin with?

I've sailed on some of the luxury lines before: Regent, Azamara, Radisson before Regent bought it and Silverseas. I much prefer Celebrity over them on many itineraries. I find that the nightlife is so boring so unless I am doing a Baltic cruise where I'm too exhausted in the evenings I prefer Celebrity. I was just on the Edge in the Med and found few lines at the elevators or over crowding. The beauty of their suite class is that you can create your own small ship luxury feel if you would like but have the opportunity to have all of the great venues that the ship offers. Now if you are looking at an itinerary that brings you to ports where the large ships can't get to, then that is a different story.

    Thank you for the replies........

Just took a quick look at both flights and trains:

Flight out of BCN - 10:05AM (but there is a flight at 12:20PM) - Just would really prefer the earlier

Train out of Barcelona Sants - 9:25AM (otherwise have to spend the night in Barcelona)

I guess neither the airport or train station is not that far.......but I'm nervous about cutting it close?!

If the ship docks at 6 and we can carry our own luggage off, does that mean we could walk off anytime after the ship is cleared?

    Thanks again,

    Heather

Yes you can carry your bags off after 6 am. Seems like plenty of time for the train station.

  5. We just got off the Edge in Barcelona. We had a 9:40 flight on American. You can carry your bags off at 6 but we chose to go with the first grouping and pick up our luggage. We arranged for this at guest services during the week. We were called at 6:50, had our bags at 7:00 and in a tax at 7:05. There is no customs to go through and plenty of taxis waiting. We were at the airport with 2 hours to spare.

  6. It’s a form of EDM that they are playing. We just got off the Edge and it’s definitely being played especially in the martini bar. So funny, in May 2014 my daughter and I did a British Isles cruise on the Infinity. Since it was off season it was a much older crowd. I noticed the music the first night in the martini bar and the first time I had seen a DJ there on a Celebrity ship. I asked him why the music choice as my then 20 year old daughter and I looked around at ages of the much older people sitting in the bar. He told us that they had been told to play it by the Miami office. That seemed to be the start of the “modern cruising” campaign and I have noticed it on every Celebrity sailing since.

Hi Kat!  Do you remember what nights Dinner on the Edge was offered?  We will be on the Aug. 3rd sailing.  Also, what time did they start letting people off the ship in Rome?  Thanks!

I just did the Edge, Rome to Barcelona and we had 2 nights of the dinner offered with two seatings. They will most likely offer it when the boat is sailing away from port on the earlier side. We did a late seating when it left Livorno and I think the other night was a sea day. Check immediately when you get on the boat because both nights sold out on ours. In Barcelona, we left the ship with the first non-walk off at 6:50

we cruise all the time and have not been on Celebrity for 10 years, we just booked spring break on the edge and it looks like I need to make all my diner reservation online Like we do on NCL is this right? and do they ever run the drink package or dinning package on sale?

are there fees for the drone racing and archery ? we are excited to be back on Celebrity our 2 youngest are now older teenagers and will be ok not having slides and rock climbing walls

but it looks like things have change a lot since we cruise Celebrity last

thanks for any input you may have

We just got off the Edge. I’m assuming you have select dining? We did so I booked a few specialty restaurants ahead of time, dinner on the edge ( it’s offered 2 nights during the cruise as an outside sail away experience $95 pp but you can only book once on the ship). I did not reserve the other nights ahead of time, you don’t have to. We were only a twosome so we never waited. We tried each of the four “main” dining rooms. You might want to book them now and then you could always change them on the boat. On our cruise last week the shows were at 7:30 and 9:30 so we went to the early show and then ate by 8:30 or so.

We were in Ibiza until midnight too. If we were there later we may have attempted a club (maybe...the last time I was in a club was a decade ago, lol!) but I have to imagine they aren't very busy until later?

I think that most of the EDM clubs open at midnight. The restaurant we ate dinner at told us about Club Lio which is a famous cabaret supper club. They called to get us on the list because there was an event going on there, and it would be nuts. It was standing room only but we had so much fun and were sad to have to leave. I think the acts go on until 6 am lol

  10. Excellent review! We were on the same sailing. I wondered why my flat iron kept blinking, I guess it was the low current you mention! Funny, I did the same thing during the night trying to turn the bathroom light on lol. I then realized that there was a night light that remained on in the bathroom and was adequate enough lol. Wish we were still on the ship! 😢

    Thank you for your review.

We have a 5 year old and an 8 year old who loves swimming. Hopefully they will not bother the rest as there is no segregation .

Did you see any Asian stir fry table?  Looking forward to fried rice and jumbo shrimps. Hopefully it is the same as what we had in Harmony.

We only ate lunch one day at the buffet which was our sea day. I remember seeing shrimp and I’m sure you will find what are looking for. If you liked the food on the Harmony, I did not, you are going to love the Edge food! Great quality!

  12. We had a wonderful cruise aboard the Edge. We thoroughly enjoyed our Infinite Veranda cabin and the entire ship. It was incredibly hot but we made the best of it. We had been in Amsterdam the week prior and spent a few nights in 100 degree weather in Rome; luckily we had planned on just relaxing at the beautiful pool at our hotel, the Rome Cavalieri, a great decision!

We ate at Fine Cut, Rooftop and the Magic Carpet specialty dinners. We cancelled our Eden dinner because we just could not face another big dinner lol. The rest of the dinners were spent in each of the 4 dining rooms as we had select dining. Being a couple made it very easy to get a table. We never waited. We thought that Tuscany had the best service and friendliest staff. Our favorite specialty item was the short rib appetizer in Cosmopolitan. The magic carpet dinner was lovely, we did the late seating at 8:45 when sailing away from Livorno. It is typically offered 2 times per week with 2 seatings each. You need to book it immediately when you get to the ship. Both nights had sold out. Fine cut was good with the only complaint being the shrimp cocktail; it wasn’t cold and firm like it should be. We didn’t eat much breakfast but did make the late buffet breakfast on 2 mornings. There was a nice variety. We really loved the pizza, a nice thin and crispy crust which has been absent on most cruise lines lately.

Our IV cabin was great. We never closed the glass doors and left the area open giving us the extra space. It’s a whirlwind of a week with little downtime to sit around but we did open the window when leaving port and taking a nap. We were too tired to notice if the AC was shut off or not when opened so I can’t comment on that. The weather was terribly hot so I like the fact that we had the extra space. If we had a “normal” balcony I don’t think we would have gone out on it much with the weather. When I did the British Isles cruise I never opened it once as it was just too cold. This is a great benefit. The cabin is decorated nicely and very modern. I loved the large bathroom but it did take away some closet space. There was not much floor space inside the closet so I left my shoes outside of it next to the couch. You can charge your phone on only one side of the bed and not the other. They should have included an outlet on both sides. The desk is shorter with a box containing electrical outlets taking up space. I did like the lighted vanity mirror.

The shows are different from the usual and contain a lot of acrobatics in the theater, club and Eden. There are no broadway showtunes shows. We enjoyed the live performances and especially loved the duo, Gilley and the Girl; they performed Eagles, Carol King and James Taylor, etc. there was a great Whitney Houston show as well as a Jersey Boys show. The Eden show is at 10:15 offered 4 times a week. We saw it one of the nights and enjoyed it.

The ship is gorgeous with interesting artwork, upscale shops and a great boutique, sexy vibe. There isn’t bingo or ice sculpting or line dancing or any of the old school activities like you may be used to. There were many large extended families from all over the world with lots of children. I did notice the kids on our sea day as it was difficult to enjoy the pool without being splashed. Speaking of the pool: I like the ledge to sit on and the loungers on it but there is almost no spots to get some shade. Where there could be loungers they have placed cabanas which are peculiar because they are behind the pool facing away and don’t seem very desirable.

All in all we loved the Edge. It’s always difficult to enjoy everything the ship offers on an intensive port itinerary but I think we did a pretty good job seeing and experiencing almost everything.

  13. Just got off the Edge, Rome to Barcelona. I’m from south Florida and it was hot! We had 100 degrees in Rome but thank goodness had planned some pool days at our hotel. The humidity is not nearly as high as it is where we live and that does make a difference. My hair never frizzed up lol. I bring a tiny battery operated fan I carry, dollar tree or Walmart. Wear white or light clothes. My wide brimmed hats saved the day. You can buy in Europe if you don’t bring. Drink lots of water! Leave the ship early to get things done early. Pace yourself. Enjoy!

Sorry, early and late seating on Edge applies to dining rooms... not MC. They only schedule dinner on the Edge once or so per cruise and it is highly dependent upon weather and wind conditions as I recall. They do have lunch on MC... but not sure when they reposition MC from upper decks to 5 for that...but I believe they post the schedule on the ship.

Hi. Sorry for the confusion. I was asked what seating I did on the magic carpet. They offered the dinner on 2 nights during last week’s cruise with an early and a late seating. We chose the 8:45 seating and it was lovely as we sailed away from Livorno.

  15. Hi. We had a fabulous day on Capri and Anacapri! I found another couple on cruise critic to share it and we used Tours of Capri and Cristina was our contact. We had a great guide, Michaeli (not sure of the spelling). He met as at the port and walked us over to the ferry with prepaid tickets. We ferried over and an open air, canopied Jeep was waiting with a driver. We went straight to the blue grotto just as they had started going in. We got lucky because the day before it had been closed. When we came out there was a line a mile long. We then went to Anacapri and took a chairlift to the highest point for a beautiful view. The chairlift was an awesome experience and I’m a chicken lol. We did a little shopping and then to a wonderful local, not touristy, restaurant that I had researched. The car came again for us and took us to Capri for free time and then a funicular down to and back on the ferry. It was a long day, 7:40-5:00. Out guide was wonderful and at 150 euro pp it was a steal as it included ferry and other admissions. Do not do it with more than 4 people or it will not run as smoothly. It was boiling hot and we would never have been able to accomplish what we did on our own. Btw, the ferry alone is 45 euro pp.

Just out of interest what ports were there when you could book the MC ?

Can you book Eden for a meal and there isn't a show? It is the show that puts us right off not the food !

The MC dinner was offered on 2 nights, both when we left port around 7pm. They don’t do it on late night ports since you are sailing while eating. There are 2 seatings. We did the 8:45 one. I believe it was the Naples and Florence days.

Eden is available for dinner every night. The show starts at 10:15 so you would probably be done with dinner before. Also the dining is on a different level than the show. We decided to cancel our Eden dinner so I can’t comment on it but I believe the performers walk around. We saw the show from the main level where the bar is located.

  17. Currently on the edge and enjoying Montaudon on the premium package. It’s a French champagne and much better than Chandon. The magic carpet is also a champagne bar and offers Veuve for $5 additional. They also have various Moet & Chandons.

    Hello,

Heard that there is a heatwave right now in Europe. How bad is it? So scared for my asthma.

Kat288 are you by any chance in the Amalfi route? I am hoping for anybody to post the dailies so we can plan accordingly.

I’m sorry but I haven’t kept the dailies but yes I am on that route. When are you going? Next week’s temps look much cooler. We had 100 degrees in Rome but luckily we had planned to not sightsee and enjoy the resort’s pool for a few days pre cruise. Try to plan being off the ship early to avoid the hottest afternoon temps. Don’t go to Pompeii where there isn’t shade. Bring a hand held battery fan and take plenty of water with you. Make sure to bring wide brim hates. They have been a lifesaver for me. Hopefully it will cool down in time for your trip but it is normally pretty hot in July and Aug in the med. We have sailed the past several summers and it keeps getting hotter!

As to the heatwave- not certain how long it is supposed to last, but friends were in Paris last Friday. The reported temperature was 96 degrees F.

Jesseslola- not certain of your travel dates, but,you could Google the weather for the ports you are visiting to get an idea of temperatures.

I am also asthmatic and find it is high humidity that affects me the most.

Luckily it is not high humidity which we are used to from Florida.
