Chilkat Guides.  Wildlife safari and bear viewing. $155 on their website.

Thank you Wolfie.  Unfortunately they are not offering that tour on the day we will be there. 😞

We had held back from booking a flightseeing trip anywhere ahead of time in case of poor weather, but when we docked in Haines the weather was perfect  and we went directly to a local flying company and booked a flightseeing trip. We chose one that flew over Glacier Bay and had a wonderful flight

Thanks edinburgher.  Wow, I'll bet that was spectacular!  Several years ago we did one in Ketchikan, over Misty Fjords....same deal....got off the ship and the weather was perfect and we were able to book it right then.

  3. Thank you Wolfie and karatemom..... this sounds good.  Is it a bus, van, some type of watercraft?  Who is the tour operator?

First time in Haines and looking forward to it...

Ditto this. You will be there at an optimal time to see brown bears feeding on salmon. Lots of eagles too. It was one of our favorite excursions in Haines.

  4. Going to be in Haines early August and looking at excursions available.   A "wildlife canoe safari" on Chilkoot Lake sounds like it may be good.  Has anyone been on this or similar tour?  Your thoughts/ comments, etc.??  Or what did YOU like in Haines?   Comments, suggestions welcome!

  5. Just got off the Grand 3 days ago. Nothing that we were aware of in the Horizon Court. Sometimes only one side was open (after the "rush hours") and a couple of times they may have been working in the closed side...new carpets, maybe? Again no problems in Horizon Court on our 10 days......whatever the problem may have been fixed.

  6. A few years back we were on a Caribbean cruise on the Ruby out of New York City where we live and the second night when we went to dinner we were placed with three other couples, the three men were all hot shot wall street brokers and they were bragging about the deals and tricks they do giving me hot stock tips, telling what to watch for in a few weeks, basically breaking the law and bragging about it, after the main course was done one of them asked me what I do for a living. I just could not resist the temptation, I replied that I was an Investigator for the Securities and Exchange Commission, well you should have seen their faces, they jumped up said hey look at the time we got to go, but you did not have dessert and coffee I said, by the way I didn't catch your names. The waiter came over looked at them almost running out of the dinning room turned to me and asked what happened, I told him that they said they had a show to catch. My wife looked at me and said, really the SEC, really. I would wave to them every time I saw them on and off the ship. I'm a Carpenter and my wife is a Teacher, no SEC.

    LOVE IT !!!!

  7. In the Bonine / meclizine crowd.....works great and no side effects. (Dramamine has too many side effects.) We start right before the ship leaves port and take one every afternoon. If things get really rough we bring along ginger chews...pretty much instant relief to bridge any gaps.

  8. Just to let folks know.....we have returned and the taxis were the best way to get to and from Terminal 2 (and the central bus station). About 15 GBP from LHR to hotel and then the staff at Premier Inn called a car (fixed rate: 12 GBP) for the trip back to LHR. Way easy, less hassle and not that much more $$.

Thank you for the suggestions and experiences!!

  9. I was wondering what the best options are for transfers between the Premier Inn on Bath Road (LHR) and Terminal 2 / 3 (ie: the central bus station). The Hoppa seems quite expensive and after booking the PI, I discovered that it was outside the "free bus zone". Is it feasible to walk from the last free bus stop to the PI or do I pay the bus fare (how much?) for drop off closer to PI ?

Thank you in advance for any help / suggestions.

  10. Creek Street and Totem Heritage Center are both easily walkable from the ship and easy to do on your own. Agree about taking the city bus to Totem Bight...easy and fun. We did Saxman on a tour that we picked up at the booths when we left the ship....lots of things available! And if it's a nice day you could pick up a flightseeing tour to Misty Fjords....yes, expensive but WOW! beautiful! (We have been there several times and always find something to do!)

  11. From the airport we have used the HAL transfers. Similar in pricing, but they take your luggage right at the baggage pick up and you don't have to think about it until you get it onboard! They send you out to the bus pick up area which is closer than the shuttle, taxi, etc pick up. Very easy and convenient. For transport back to the airport we used Seattle Express shuttle...$15/pp(?) and they were right outside the terminal.

  12. Agree with the others....we always take Bonine (meclizine) once a day. It does the trick AND does NOT make you sleepy. For immediate relief if we are on a small boat or it is exceptionally rough, we have ginger chew candies with us....spicy but works right away!

  13. Skagway: small van up to Emerald Lake and then train back through Chilkoot Tours was great!

Booked a flightseeing over Misty Fjords right off the ship but don't remember the name of the company....it was amazing!

Went on a Bear Search in Hoonah with Misty Bay Lodge.....NO bears! it was around mid-July.....did see bear scat on the road and some gigantic footprints by the river, but......NO bears.

  14. Yes, Hubbard is great....if you don't run into too much fog/ too much ice.... First time to Hubbard we could NOT get close....total FOG, slow, slow moving and foghorn blaring until the Capitan turned the ship around....(boohoo). Lucked out last year and it was great! First time, though we did Glacier Bay. It was spectacular. Good info and narration from the Park Rangers on board and lots to see. Make sure you pick an itinerary to Glacier Bay!
