Volcano Village is only 3,700' and Kīlauea is only 4,000' so you should be okay to have a good day.

Desert tables don't do a thing for me, but I would have destroyed those trays of smoked salmon and sashimi.

We were on The Coral for a 17 day Panama Canal cruise and loved the Coral. We just love the whole Panama Canal experience in the old locks. If you have not already, rear The Path Between the Seas by David McCullough.

Lou & Mickey's is at the southern most part of The Gaslamp Quarter. There are a half dozen steak houses in the Gaslamp closer to the Westin.
Dobson's Bar and Restaurant is close and very good, so are Salvatore's Cucina & Lounge and Saint James French Diner.

At the meet and greet today I mentioned the unliveable noise levels in the pizza and mentioned the room issues a lady showed up and led me away. I figured she was going to throw me overboard but she took notes and said something would happen. If I cannot have a shower in the next couple of weeks the wife will start to complain.
I hope things have been resolved by now, but one of my favorite cruise hacks when I am unhappy with my shower (low pressure, bad temp control) is to use the showers in the Men's Changing Room in the Spa. I don't recall the ones on Coral, it's been a while, but on the Diamond they were great.

San Pedro actually is the City of Los Angeles. It is a neighborhood of LA (home of the 2024 World Champion LA Dodgers) not a separate city.

Westin Bayview, it is definitely not bayfront,
I'd walk up India Street into Little Italy for some of the best dining in SD, or over to Fifth Ave for the dinners.
For breakfast, Breakfast Republic, Corner Bakery, and Harbor Breakfast.

How small is a "smaller" boat? Will you be snorkeling? That is how you see the turtles, by being in the water. Waikiki Sailing and Pink Sail both use 50 passenger cats I believe.
If you are getting in the water in Hawaii, be sure to buy reef safe sunscreen before you go or at Long's Drugs or Walmart when you get there.

We are arriving a few days before our cruise and hope to be able to see some sights! I am wondering anyone has any recommendations for hotels in LA and cruise port transfer ideas.
It depends on your budget and what you want to see. LA is a very big, spread out place.
My preference would be Santa Monica, but it is more expensive.
A lot of tourists stay in Hollywood.
To get to the hotel (any hotel) use Uber and use Uber to get to the cruise port.

right now at least Hilton workers are apparently striking in San Diego.
The only Hilton that had strikers was the Hilton Bayfront and they ended the strike three days ago.

Does anyone have experience with Welcome Pickups? Our travel agent recommended it.
Founded in 2015 in Athens, Greece......
I am suspicious of anything a TA recommends because I always wonder what their cut is. Never, ever heard of "Welcome Pickups", but I have Uber, a California company. What is wrong with Uber? What are you looking to pay for a ride of 35 miles?
I got a quote of $138 from Welcome P. That is Uber Black expensive. Regular Uber using the LAX-it Lot should be $40-60. Unless you are infirm, I'd be using Uber/Uber Black. (or Lyft, another CA company).

Just need one night on December 6th fly in from Calgary AB arriving around noon San Diego time thanks
You are right. I cannot begin to imagine what is going on in San Diego on Friday Dec. 6, but every chain hotel (Marriott, Hilton) is sold out and the few that do have availability (like Residence Inn La Jolla) are double their normal rate.
Using Booking.com I see that the Atwood, King's Inn, Best Western Yacht Harbor, Days Inn San Diego Hotel Circle have availability, but I would book quickly. The first three would be my recs.

Depends too on what time of year your Cruise is. We cruise in early December and just about every hotel we look at are fully booked. Should have thought of looking at hotel when we booked the Cruise. Lesson learned.
What dates do you need and what hotels are you looking at? I can't think of any events in early December that would have hotels full. It is a slow convention time, the Holiday Bowl is after Christmas....

Never used it because Uber has been very reliable and a reasonable price. Opoli doesn't have very good reviews so I never contemplated using them to save maybe $5 or $10 more dollars.

Uber first, then a taxi.

One huge unintended perk. Friends are under the weather but with full suite, breakfast at sabbatinis had 6 people total....
I like that no one is punching a meal card so I can go get my Bagel & Lox at Sabatini's and then go to the buffet for breakfast #2 and load up on my bacon.

Has anyone used HR Car Service? They seem to have decent reviews
Are you referring to HR LAX Black Car Service? I had not heard of them, yes they have good reviews, but not many total reviews.
I have used Elite Limousine Los Angeles to pick up clients at LAX and been happy with them.
But personally, if I was healthy, I'd use Uber or Lyft at LAX. I'd only go the curbside service if I was not great at walking or had too much luggage.
I also recommend shuttles like Mickey's Space Ship Shuttle, Zippy Shuttle, Karmel Shuttle and Skyline Shuttle Express.

we are a party of 6 so I’d hate to take up nearly the entire shuttle with my family.
It is literally 5 minutes to the rental car counters from the port.

If everyone is okay to walk, have them leave the port area, so there is no hassle/delay in picking them up. They can meet you in front of the Keaukaha General Store on Kalanianaole St & Silva St.

According to other posts Budget runs a free shuttle. It starts continuous pickups from when the ship docks until about 11:30am then return shuttles from about 2:30pm. I think Avis does also.
On 10/5/2024 at 7:36 PM, strobellayjam said:Thanks, after reading more that the shuttles take only 2 people / booking party it looks to make more sense that we take an Uber / taxi to the airport to pick up our vehicle.
Avis and Budget are one company, separate divisions, but use the same shuttle.
I've never heard of the '2 person' rule, but it may vary based on how many cars they have booked. Personally, since the airport (Hilo) is only like 3 miles from the port, I wouldn't bother with an Uber or taxi and the wait for one might not be worth it, nor the cost.

Are you referring to Princess ships? I've never received an email with a concierge pass (although, I don't cruise Royal Class and above ships). What is a "vista ship"?
Vista ships are Carnival - Carnival Panorama (2019), Carnival Horizon (2018), Carnival Vista (2016), Carnival Venezia (2023) and Carnival Firenze (2024). Ships that almost make Carnival worthwhile and tempting for someone 35 minutes south of the Long Beach cruise terminal.
We have done some Carnival trips with the grandkids because they like the bells and whistles. This sounds like the Suite Perks of Carnival, who is of course the parent of Princess. Maybe there is some confusion.

Only one really worthy is breakfast if specialty restaurants every morning.
I think there are a lot more than that, including Specialty Dining on Embarkation Day, complimentary laundry, priority tender boarding, priority embarkation, priority debarkation, the mini-bar set-up, in suite afternoon tea, Reserve Dining with more choices, and if you are a Captain's Circle Member, double cruise credit, so on a 16 day cruise, you get 32 days of credit.

Has anyone booked a ride with Prime Time shuttle?
Prime Time Shuttle is awful, awful, awful. Avoid like the plague.
They have 911 reviews on Google for their LA operation and the rating average is 1.6 out of 5.

Sounds like a great day! Did you notice if any of the rental car companies had shuttles to take you back and forth from the pier? Or are taxi's our only option now?
Avis/Budget and Payless have shuttles to the cruise port.
FYI, to avoid any confusion, it is Kilauea Iki.

Hopefully the new People Mover will open as scheduled in early 2026 and make this a bit easier.
And hopefully it will snow in LA in August to cool things off a little, but I wouldn't count on either 🤣

Uber Black picks up curbside and there are at least two taxi stands at LAX besides the LAX-it Lot. One is across from Terminal B and one is at Terminal 7. There may be a third.
LAX to Long Beach, cab or Uber Black, I'd guess $100 to $110+ tip.
Uber from the LAX-it Lot, $60-70+ tip.
