  1. We are going to stay in a Haven Spa stateroom. What is a OS, DOS and a GV please? I too was wondering about bottled water and soft drinks with the beverage package. Thanks

    OS = Owners Suite

    DOS = Deluxe Owners Suite

    GV = Garden Villa

  2. Just to be clear, I am on the Gem right now... and while there is definitely a serious medical ailment happening onboard, so far no one has referred to it as Norovirus.

    I'm not sure if Acute Gastroenteritis is the same thing as Norovirus, but that is what it is being called.

    Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause inflammation of the stomach and large intestine lining (gastroenteritis); they are the leading cause of gastroenteritis in the U.S. The norovirus was originally called the Norwalk virus after the town of Norwalk, Ohio, the location of the first confirmed outbreak in 1972.

  3. Did you happen to go to the meet and greet? Usually you get a card with all the manager's direct phone numbers on it. I'd bet a quick call to the Dining Manager or Hotel Director would have rectified your dining issues immediately. As for the long lines, well that comes with the territory of cruising on one of the mega ships.

    This is the best advice for anyone. Make sure to take the half hour or so and go to the M&G. The officers tell you that they want you to have any issues fixed while on board so that you have a good experience.

  4. We're 33 days out and originally booked with kids sail free, so would I then only pay for the first 2 people in the cabin on upgrades, as well? What would be considered a desirable upgrade from a family mini? A higher category? A Junior Suite? Sorry for all the questions, I'm kind of new to this. lol

    It is my understanding the upsell pricing is for the first 2 persons per cabin.

  5. Majority of the people that say Nassau is unsafe usually have never left the comfort of a 1st world country. Just because the area doesn't look like home doesn't mean everyone that lives there is out to get you. Tourism is a huge part of their economy, robbing all visitors wouldn't help tourism.

    Everyone wants paradise and they want it ASAP. Yes, the beach by the dock is unimpressive and gets crowded, But taking a taxi or walking a bit will pay off immensely in finding a more spacious beach area. The port is whatever you make of it.

    Really?

    As per the the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/the-bahamas.html

    "Armed robbery remains a major criminal threat facing U.S. citizens in The Bahamas. The U.S. Embassy has received multiple reports of tourists robbed at gunpoint or knifepoint in tourist locations in the downtown areas of Nassau, to include the cruise ship docks and the Cable Beach commerce areas; several of these incidents occurred during daylight hours. Burglaries, larcenies and “snatch-and-grab” crimes happen in Nassau and U.S. citizens have been victims of these crimes. The U.S. Embassy has received reports of assaults, including sexual assaults, in diverse areas such as in casinos, outside hotels, or on cruise ships. The Bahamas has the highest incidence of rape in the Caribbean according to a 2007 United Nations report on crime, violence, and development trends."

    But as they state:

    "There is nobody better at protecting you than yourself. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. The U.S. Embassy reports that victims of crime are often those who have let their guard down to individuals who appeared overly friendly or became victims after criminals targeted them as easy prey due to the visitor appearing excessively drunk or unaware."

  6. Aren't those

    Several years ago we stayed in 9504 Owners suite. The front balcony was very usable, our first day at sea there was basically no wind, and in fact I found it quieter then the side balcony was. One thing though is that in those front balconies you are required to keep the drapes shut tightly at night to not allow light to escape and interfere with the bridge.

  7. ...Once you connect to the network, you are diverted to a login webpage where you have to provide your credentials. The router is unaware of this, so each device will still have to provide a web credential whether you connect directly to the network or via the router...

    There are travel routers/apps that handle this for you so that you can still share the connection, without entering the credentials on each device.

  8. Well do to trying to save money since this is a B2B, we went with an obstructed ocean view on deck 8. First time without a balcony and first time not in a suite how will we ever survive!:eek::D.

    I was going to say, that the only outside stateroom I would stay away from is an obstructed view on deck 8. My family stayed in an obstructed view on deck 8 on the Dawn, and the issue we had was that the cabins are set further back into the hull due to the lifeboats hanging outside. This puts the hallway on deck 9 right over the cabin, and I could not believe the noise from children running down the hallway, sometimes very late into the night. Of course this may not even be an issue for you or on your cruise, but I swore we would not book one of those room again if set back in the hull, and it looks like the Gem is the same design.

  9. I actually like Carlos bakery, in fact my daughter just had her 10th Birthday party there yesterday. However, I am not a fan of fondant (we call it fonDONT) and I would not be happy getting, let alone paying that price for one. Now give me their red velvet cake, crumb cake, lobster tails or cannoli and I am happy (their carrot cake is not the best I have had but pretty good).

  10. Agree - keep in mind it's not NCL making the cakes on behalf of Carlo's. It's Carlo's making the cakes and stocking them on the ship. They need time to make sure they make all the cakes and the treats to accommodate 4,000 people at least a few weeks before sailing. Don't worry - I'm sure they make extra cakes in case people who didn't order ahead of time decide they want to buy a cake while on board. I'm sure you will still get your cake. Have a great trip!

    Sorry but this is incorrect.

    As per http://www.usatoday.com/story/cruiselog/2013/04/29/cake-boss-bakery-norwegian-ship/2120479/

    "Belgiovine says he's training the new shop's staff to bake the Carlo's way, and he's getting a kick out of all the passengers coming in for a look-see."

  11. ...I think I read somewhere that there's a way to figure out if your bed is by the balcony or the closet going by the deck plans. But I don't know how to tell. Do you know the cabin number for the pic you posted? I'm pretty sure they rotate every other cabin similar to Oasis and Allure.

    If you look at the deck plans you can tell where the bed is by looking at the bump out in the wall. The area that is deeper is where the bed is.

  12. ...Noise from deck 7 below, which is a designated path for walking except for late night & early morning hours, did not pose any problems for us at all. Children, usually, running up & down the hallway directly above the cabins and/or slamming doors are the problem - but, it could happen anywhere else on the ship so these cabins aren't immune to neighbors and adults "free styling" that are less than courteous. ....

    Great informative post. I had an obstructed view on deck 8 on the Dawn last year. The noise from children running up and down the hallway is due to the fact that these rooms are inset into the hull, and are therefore directly under the deck 9 hallway. The running started at 5:00AM and would happen until 1:00AM or later the next morning. I personally would not book one of these rooms again.
