Ummm....2008 was 5 years ago, not 25 years ago. And yes I can remember my dining room experience from when I was 26 quite well.
sorry but I was on the Spirit in 2003 panama 14 days . and not one time they remove the crumbs from the table. the last time that they removed crumbs was back in 1996. I think you might be thinking what it was like, what you heard from here on the CC .

I completely agree with you on your above statement [in red]. I have eaten fabulous foods from street vendors and hole-in-the-wall mom n' pop places around the world. Bangkok has a wonderful street-food scene and some of the best hand-pulled noodles I ever ate were in a tiny restaurant in Xi'an, China.
That said, this debate isn't so much about the food as it is about the decor. I know what I'm getting at a road-side stall and am paying accordingly...a $1 meal in China, no matter how fabulous, brings different expectations than a dinner on an ocean-going ship. Maybe I am overly sentimental for a 31 year old but there is a certain ambiance expected in the MDR of a ship...there are traditions that are a lovely part of my [and I'm quite sure many others'] vacations. Formal meal service is not for everyone and I agree that those people should also be catered to; the fact remains, though, that they ARE catered to with other dining options such as the lido eateries. If CCL strips all the formality and elegance from their nightly dinner service where does it leave their clients who enjoy such things? With competing lines?
As far as your Holiday Inn reference, I have to respectfully disagree a bit. Yes it is true that in general they are lower priced than a Ritz Carlton [assuming same locations and dates of travel] and generally offer a more casual atmosphere. However, they are now considered a mid-level hotel brand and have spent years trying to change their image away from road-side motel lodging [i.e. Motel 6] and more towards full-service hotels and resorts [i.e. Marriott]. In other words, they are trying to improve their image, not roll it backwards as CCL seems to be doing.
My first cruise was only in 2008 and was on the Carnival Fascination. Even as recently as then the waiter would clear your silverware after each course and scrape the crumbs from the table before dessert; things I have not seen since. Those who have been cruising far longer than I probably notice even more drastic changes. There is something nice about true formal meal service on a ship; it is tradition but also a chance to be served the way most of us are not in our every day lives.
So you know how the dining was when you were 6 in the dining room back 25 year ago?

long as the food brilliant , Who cares . I go to the MDR for food that I would not get at home. going on 2/3/20014 will be 30 something cruises with CCL. I do live on a big mountain in god country.

leaving 9/5/14. I Will see for myself .I hope that Mr S. S has been right.

We always slip the steward and DR staff a little extra. Have always been lucky to have terrific service. On one European cruise, we had a charming Polish young man as steward. When in Poland we asked what his favorite beer was so we could try it. We smuggled a few bottles back on board and discreetly gave it to him. He was so excited, it made our day.
You maybe made his day. good for you. One time we smuggled some lobster for the room steward . they don't get lobster on the ship
-
I always bring thank you cards with me and when I meet the various staff I make sure I write their names down correctly along with where they are from. I inform them that it is important to me that I not only send out letters to the cruiseline when things go terribly wrong but I like to also do so when things go well. I have almost always felt I have gotten impeccable service (with the exception of one waiter trying so very hard but always messing up and one cruise - not carnival - where we just got a bad draw of staff). The last night of the cruise I hand out thank you cards with extra tip in them. And yes I have sent letters to the higher ups saying how wonderful so and so was and specifically why.
I think that everyone should do what you do

Has anyone notice that the food in the buffet is hotter on embarkation and debarkation ? Would it be because the US heath dept might board and ck the food for the temp that is sitting in the trays ? Be cause if it is not then they could shut it down .
-
I have been on a lot of long cruises , and got to meet a lot of crew and officers . They have been great to us, and remember are names. They always take care of us . the last 2 cruises we had lobster on the lido deck. One time there were 4 guys on the paradise , next was the miracle 2 couples . We always tip very good. Always take care of the 1 that serve you and they will take care of you when cruising.
-
The reason you're not supposed to take a hot meal from the Main Dining room is because of the sanitation regulations. All food must be served at a certain temperature and they are liable if someone gets sick. My sister is a health inspector so I know this to be true. The buffets are different because you're serving yourself. Carnival also confirmed this the last time my sister sailed with us.
Ask your sister that the food in the buffets has to be served at a set temp. So when you take it to your room it is different story. so it is ok to get sick off of buffets food but not MDR food

Thanks for the photos. We have this cabin to go to Hawaii in October 2013. We can hardly wait!
you will love this room. Had this room to Alaska, big , enjoy

good for carnival

I would think that a potential cruiser who is on the fence because of the engine room problems would be put at ease knowing that the ships have these temporary emergency generators on board until a permanent solution can be installed. I think that a press release, or some other announcement like that would be good PR for Carnival.
You are right

Weather in Seattle & Alaska Cruise:
Overall, the weather was much better than I had anticipated based on everyone's remarks about September weather on the message boards. I understand this can vary, but Carnival's last Alaska cruise of the season had great weather (or so I thought). There literally wasn't one drop of rain the entire trip – not in Seattle for the 3 days nor while onboard the ship (at least that we experienced). The only times on the trip I was cold was Glacier Bay day. On that day I had my fleeced lined waterproof jacket, scarf, jeans. It was very windy that day which made it feel colder. The only other time I was cold was while on the glacier landing/hike in Juneau. The rest of the trip, jeans (or active pants) with thermal top and light jacket was plenty warm enough. Everyone in port kept saying we lucked up with the weather each day. I’ll comment more later about what I packed, didn’t wear, etc. I stocked up on Alaska wear for months before we set sail. Returning with at least half of it unworn!
Stateroom – Cabin 7300 Aft-Extended Balcony –
When I initially booked, I had booked the interior with French door cabin. Once I looped my DH in that I had booked the Alaska cruise for his birthday, he encouraged me to upgrade to the aft-extended balcony. We had these rooms in the past and always enjoyed the view and wake off the back of the ship. Since it was a special occasion and we figured we wouldn’t be doing Alaska again anytime soon we changed our room. Prior to the cruise, all posts I read online said that having a balcony for Alaska was a must have! After our sailing I would have to disagree. In Glacier Bay, we found ourselves on the top decks more than anywhere else, primarily because the views were so much better. You were constantly moving from one area to the next while traveling through Glacier Bay since the scenery on both sides of the ship was constantly changing. We did spend time sitting on our balcony at points throughout the week, but it didn’t seem to be for any extended period of time. In hindsight, I don’t think the room was worth twice ($1600 more) what we could have spent for our initial room reservation. Knowing what I know now, I would have rather taken that money and used it to pay for my excursions. Don’t get me wrong, having a balcony was nice. But it wasn’t a “have to have” if you’re on a budget.
We were in 7301 there were 4 and cost 820 each . On the same cruise

perhaps on your next chef table ask?
"debbie in louisiana – you asked what black chocolate is debbie in reference to the recipe for the wcmc. I checked with the chef and it refers to dark instead of milk chocolate that’s all and he recommends a good brand. We use a belgian brand called lindt which, as so many of you have testified to, tastes amazing. Let me know how yours turns out. …………….bon appetit
"
you are the man
-
Fake chocolate? Hardly. Seems to be Carnival even uses dark Belgian chocolate in the warm chocolate melting cake.
Not quite sure how people who don't cruise on Carnival would know? Perhaps via a friend of a cousin of an adopted .... ????
I have been to 2 chef table , an in the kitchen when they make the melting cake they never said anything about Belgian dark chocolate . But you MR. S.S know everything that goes on every Carnival cruise line ships. I still think you are my hero.
-
Have 2 cruises booked . I am shaking my head , I have been cruising Carnival for more than 23 years and they have never came close to the food on Celebrity , that I have just seen. Shame on me
-
I vote Spirit class (Spirit, Pride, Legend, Miracle) ships (aft end, pool, hot tub, bar... not in that order)
I agree

Ok, so we're all being horrid with our fun-loving treatment of death on a cruise ship. But I would prefer a quickie death while having fun on a cruise, rather than the alternative involving a hospital and doctors and surgeries. Even better with a Jack Daniels in my hand!
Ask and you will receive [ scott]

HI....A couple of friends and I were on the top of the funnel. Dose that make us members of the Whale Tail Club ?

We just got back from our 1st cruise on HAL we had a deluxe wrap around suite 4180 on the Westerdam. We did the 7 day southern caribbean out of Ft. Lauderdale (Half Moon Caye, Aruba, Curucao). My last cruise on Carnival was the 7 day swine flu cruise with the CC group on the Splendor. Before that cruise we were already thinking of trying other cruise lines. There had been a few small issues already that wanted us to try other lines but nothing major, I guess the Splendor issues (the way they handled the whole thing) finally made it easier to try HAL.
Let me say I think Carnivals food and service are very good and I found HALS to be not much different or better. But what we really liked about HAL was the atmosphere compared to Carnival is was very quiet what I mean is on Carnival there is always a dull roar in the background definitely at dinner. Also the ship was easier to look at while I never thought about how the carnival ships look I never had anything to compare it to until now. There were not a ton of announcements and no cheesy same ole same ole pool games. We did not go to any shows on HAL and we stopped going to the ones on Carnival after the 2nd cruise. While there were not alot of kids on board HAL the ones there behaved alot better and since this was a 7 day there was a good cross selection of ages. Here is what we liked best about HAL over Carnival.
The Suite perks were better by far the neptune lounge was outstanding,
free laundry plus many others that I dont even get being platinum on Carnival. Getting on the ship was a breeze but the BEST thing by far was being able to eat dinner on our Balcony 5 out of 7 nights.
We also enjoyed the Thermal suites and Hydro pool very relaxing.
Now let me say if you want a more drink till you drop cruise HAL is not for you Carnival is the FUN Ships and I have had lots of fun on them for sure. Now there were plenty of people drinking on HAL also but is was just not as loud. Before I went on the cruise I had worked close to 50 days straight and really needed to relax and recharge I think I could have dont that on both lines but is was really easy to do on HAL. We enjoyed HAL so much that I cancelled my 50% off cruise Carnival finally broke down and gave us after the Swine flu Splendor will I cruise Carnival again maybe but I would be by myself cause my wife loved HAL. We are next sailing on Celebrity in April and I booked another aft suite on HAL in Nov. to do the Mexican Rivera that we missed because the Swine Flu which was not Carnivals fault but it was just the straw that finally broke the camels back and made us try other lines. Carnival introduced me to the wonderful world of cruising and I will always love them for that cause we had some great times for sure. But now i know there is more than just one flavor cause my taste have changed. I go on vacation to relax now and HAL gave me a little more of that and that is just me cause there are many who go for just the opposite and Carnival provides a great service and a great cruise also.
( ps I am a Nuclear eng. not a writer so sorry for the hard read)
Why dont you design a nuclear ship for Carnival
