  1. MyTA Said Tips R IncludeD Because Of Dynamic Dining Is That True?

Have a bit of experience with Quantum that may shed some light - or at least add to the confusion. Booked the Dec 12 sailing in March 2013 - requesting MTD, as Early Dining couldn't be booked at that time. The TA didn't know why - and Dynamic Dining wasn't "invented" yet. We booked, as others did, during a necessary period of confusion. In order to get MTD it was necessary to prepay tips, so no problem, we paid up.

Last week we booked the 3/21 Quantum sailing with our kids. Now that the Quantum experience is taking shape, the TA had more to work with, and there was no need to prepay tips - and no mention of tips at all.

So no - you don't have to prepay tips on QotS. Are they included? Doubtful, but no idea. There was never any suggestion with the latest reservation that tips were included in the fare - something the TA certainly would have mentioned as cost justification. Safe to assume they're not included.

Can you still direct your tip dollars where you think they belong? No idea, but conceptually DD is no different that MTD for tip allocation - yet there is no prepay requirement, so...?

In any case, looking forward to Quantum and DD - certain the details will sort themselves out.

  2. Is Celebrity more for the older person or someone in their 30s?

We totally enjoyed our Celebrity cruises on Equinox and Solstice - but declined another, feeling we're still too young as 60-somethings. To be fair these were extended cruises - 11-12 days, so length may have skewed the demographics older because of schools etc, but we're still not old enough to return this year. Maybe in our 70's we'd feel more comfortable, but for now, we like the energy of RCI.

Yes, they have a lawn on Solstice - but when we were on board, they still hadn't figured out what to do with it. A lawn isn't exactly RipCord by iFly, so our next 2 cruises are on Quantum of the Seas - one with our 30-something kids, one without. They too have cruised Celebrity but found RCI more their speed.

All that said - you won't have a bad experience with either line. Enjoy!

  3. Sounds like many of the Diamond cruisers should be thrilled, RCL already has the ships they love, and now they're adding something new to attract the next generation of cruisers looking for something different. Should free up some early slots in the MDR, a win for everyone.

Our kids are digital, our grand kids even more so - and if cruising is to have a future, it will take more than a crown lounge and promenade deck to make it happen. RCCL has been digitally inept over the years and today's announcements make it clear that they aren't going to keep putting band-aids on a limping backbone, they're reinventing themselves. Great news - even for analog Diamonds!

No coincidence that Quantum is shaking down in the states before home porting in Asia, the modern Chinese expect, and will accept, only the latest. A brilliant marketing move.

Cruising should be a bit of an adventure - most people cruise to escape routine, not perpetuate it. The Millenials are the future and companies that recognize that fact, and adapt, are the companies that will not just survive, they'll grow. RCCL is all over this one. Cruising Quantum in February - even more amped after today's reveal.

Final thought - exactly what is a "promenade" and who ever thought of putting a promenade deck on a ship, where they clearly don't belong? Dumbest idea since abandoning sails.
