  1. This will be my 6th cruise but 1st since the onset of an autoimmune disease that has left me with some mobility limitations that I pray don’t put too much of a burden on my husband as we travel. I can walk short distances, but can’t do stairs or steep inclines. I’m very concerned about being able to stand in line to check in at the terminal and actually getting on the ship. I do not use a wheelchair at home, and shouldn’t need one while on the cruise. I feel embarrassed to ask for a wheelchair at checkin but I also have to figure out how to handle getting around town and shore excursions. I desperately want to be able to function without help but I have to be realistic. Anyone else in a similar situation that can give me advice?  During my previous cruises, I remember admiring people on the cruise that did not let their physical limitations stop them, and now I’m in that position but nervous about how to make it all work.

any help, advice would be appreciated.

  2. I would love to spoil my Lady and serve her breakfast in bed as a treat.

Does anyone know if O'Sheehans Will box breakfast up as take-out? I really like their menu and would love to surprise my wife with a couple of hot full breakfasts. She has put up with me for 37 years and deserves to be spoiled!

We are booked on the Jewel in May.

    Thanks for any info.

  3. Very excited about cruising in Alaska next May but have a fishing excursion question. Since the salmon don't run til the summer, is there still the possibility of catching salmon on a excursion in May? I assume they would not be King Salmon but I'd sure like to catch "the big one" and have it processed to ship home.

Going to all the usual ports aboard the Jewel but wonder if we booked too early in the year.

Any knowledge you could pass on would be greatly appreciated.

  4. Thank you to everyone who replied to my request for info and help in making cruise decisions now that my wife is injured.

The orthopedic surgeon has recommended that we do not travel at this time, so we will re-schedule for late in this Alaska season.

What I did come away with from all your responses, is that if this injury situation was permanent , we would go anyway. It sounds like where there is a Will, there's a way. Congrats to all those that don't let a mobility situation stop you from seeing our beautiful world and having fun.

Fortunately, my wife's situation appears to be temporary, so we will get it fixed, rehab and then REALLY enjoy our next cruise and never take our mobility for granted.

    Thanks again!

  5. This might be better answers in the disabled forum here on CC.

How well can she walk without the walker and can she handle steps? Those are going to be the biggest things to consider with excursions.

My wife can take a few steps without the walker and should be okay moving around our cabin. She will be spending a lot of time on the balcony with her leg elevated and iced. Luckily, the scenery in Alaska is worth watching. I just don't know about our excursions and her ability to tender safely. Also a concern is the embarkation/debarkation process. Thanks for your reply. I'm hoping to get some good ideas from those that know.

  6. My wife and I are cruising in 12 days on a ten day Alaska cruise on board the Norwegian Pearl. Yesterday she badly hurt her knee and her biggest concern is not her knee... It's our cruise. She will be able to travel but the obstacles in front of us are intimidating. She will have to use a walker the whole time, use a lot of ice bags for swelling and for the most part , stay off of it. I'm worried about everything. Getting through the cruise terminal lines, getting on/off the ship and which excursions should we cancel. Any advice, experience or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. We are normally very active 60 yr olds, new to this kind of situation. Also does anyone know if she will be able to tender in Icy Strait? And what's the best way to handle going to the muster drill?

Thanks so much in advance of any helpful advice.

P.S. She is very stubborn and resistant to using a wheel chair! Grrrrrrrr

  7. I have an opportunity to take a last-minute cruise to Alaska and wanted to go on the Golden Princess. While attempting to make the reservation, I found that the ship is full and all they can offer me is a spot on their "waitlist". I would really appreciate some advice or an experienced opinion with this possibility. Specifically, what are the odds in getting it and how long does it usually take to hear whether you will get on or not.

Thanks ahead of time for any info.
