  1. You can take a taxi from the Dockyard to St George. It costs $76 plus tip. (4 or less passengers) Took about 50-55 minutes--might take longer if school is in session and you have to wait for school bus stops. We did it last Wednesday and were the first people at Tobacco Bay and had it to ourselves till about 10:30-10:45 when the ferry travelers arrived.

It was nice to see more of the island and had a good conversation with the driver. Not cheap, but much cheaper than an excursion. I have issues standing for long periods of time, so this worked well for us. Have a good trip.

  2. There was reserved seating for our cruise. You need to enter the left side of the theater and there is a staff member manning a rope blocking off several rows. There is a small Haven sign. For both shows we saw in the theater, she removed the rope and left about 5 mins before the show started.[/quote

Wow, we asked about that and were told there was no reserved seating. I wonder if someone else from my week will tell me that there was. We have always had reserved seating on other ships. My week was certainly different from yours. Curious to see if anyone will chime in.

  3. I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience!

We were on the same cruise just the week prior and loved everything about the Haven. We didn't have children running amuck, though. Thankfully, they were all very well behaved. We were also in a 2-bedroom and found the three thermostats worked well, but you had to first press the down arrow to get the lowest blue light and then press the snowflake button.

There was another woman guest I met close to our room who was also having AC issues where it wouldn't get cold enough. There was no air movement in the main room. Glad you had a good week, I know how each week can be different. I keep my thermostat a 73 at home and it was warmer than that the whole week in the main room.

  4. Could you please answer about the shows. I didn't precook because I assumed there would be seating for haven guest. Did you specifically ask the concierges?

I am sorry your experience was not better. I love kids but expect the parents to be parents. I probably would have said something.

There was no reserved seating. I assumed that as well. I also only pre-booked restaurants and not the shows. I do not think you will have a problem getting tickets from the concierge, so I wouldn't worry. We had no problem getting Second City tickets as well. The specialty restaurants were busier than I had ever seen them in the past. Hope your trip is fun!

  5. We are leaving in less then 2 weeks. Are you sure there was no haven seating for the shows? Did you specifically ask?

Typically only tenders get priority embark.

    Food is subjective.

Did you address these issues such as laundry and unruly children with the concierge?

Yes asked at the desk--I could have gotten tickets for the show, but there was no reserved seating.

We have had priority disembark in many ports--even on the Dawn in Bermuda. It was not a problem getting off the ship this time, but it was not offered as it had been on previous cruises.

Laundry came back on the last night, wasn't worth the effort. I don't know what the concierge could have done about the kid problem, but he was not at the desk when we were there from Monday til Saturday. Didn't see him at all during that time period. One assistant had trouble communicating. Like the laundry, it seemed fruitless to dwell on it, and we tried to just roll with it and did our best to move on and do things in other areas of the ship.

  6. I had the exact opposite experience in the BA Haven last December. I was also in the 2 bedroom H4 room. I like it cold, and I thought the room was very cool. Granted it was December, but it still got hot outside in the Caribbean. I had Anoop as my concierge. I didn't use him much, but the little bit I did, he was great. Reading other reviews on this board, he is a bit of an NCL rockstar. I agree with your point about the sinks and counter space, but that's kind of what's in style right now. There was plenty of storage under the sinks. I got to port around 12:30 and as soon as they printed our cards, someone walked us on to the ship, got us an express elevator, and took us right up to the Haven. Anoop then went over everything with us and took us to our room. We then met, Carlos, our butler and he took notes about everything, although we didn't have many requests. He brought my son a birthday cake without us saying anything. He was great. It seemed that he really wanted to do more than what we asked of him.

The Haven area was very quiet, but again it was offseason. They did have seats reserved every night for Haven guests at the shows. I thought Julie was a fantastic cruise director with tons of energy. I thought Teppanyaki was pretty good. Japanese steakhouses aren't really authentic Asian food. It's more American food cooked with showmanship. It was just as good as any Japanese steakhouse I have been to on land, and I've been to a few of them.

Howl at the Moon was great. Late night was the best. Dueling piano bars work best when they can jockey hard for tips. NCL doesn't let them do that. I also had a family on board that tipped them to let their young daughter sing a Whitney Houston song. She was pretty talented for her age. I talked to her parents quite a bit during the cruise and they were the nicest people, as was there daughter. It made her cruise to be able to do that. Even if she was awful, I wouldn't be bothered with giving up 5 minutes of my cruise experience to make a lasting memory for a little girl. They also did the Frozen song. It's family friendly until about 10:00 I think. Also later at night the guitar player and drummer from Rock of Ages come down and play with them.

I'm going back to the BA in October for a solo cruise to Bermuda. I hope things are more like my previous experience and not like what you experienced. I won't be in the Haven, but I really don't want all of that for this trip.

We definitely had different experiences. I don't know what goes on behind the scenes, with all the changes going on--but it was different from yours.

I guess having kids get up and sing would be fine at the end of the show or before a break, but in my opinion it took away the energy from the show as well as the audience interaction. Maybe if it was just one verse it would have been ok. It was painfully long IMO. They were jockeying for tips.

I find your comments about about Japanese food a little condescending. I collect Japanese antiques and know good/versus not authentic food. You can only cook a scallop so much before it bounces.

Hope your next trip is as good as your first.

  7. Sorry to hear you didn't like Anoop. He was our concierge on the Epic and was like a ninja! He was everywhere and helped us all the time. Sorry he wasn't up to your standards. What was your butlers name?

Haven will never have a quiet place. It's not adults only. One family can ruin it but I dont see that changing in the future.

I'd be disappointed about the port time change too.

Well, we really had different experiences. I know many people were complaining about the way we got on the ship. I didn't bother complaining, since it was water under the bridge already.

I don't give out names of those that I don't speak highly of who are not in upper positions. Our butler was nothing special when compared to others we have had. He brought us what we asked for, but there was nothing proactive.

I think the main problem with the Haven during this sailing was the lack of parents taking responsibility for their kids. I knew going in that it was not kid free, and am fine with kids who don't sit on me or who are not given there hour time-outs next to me while their parents enjoy their beverage in peace. I was concerned about the kids running on the wet tiles and the baby on the stairs. I saw there was a medivac off the Breakaway early this morning and I hope it wasn't one of the kids in this group doing a back to back. I think the new ships, since they have three floors of rooms surrounding the Haven area, would be large enough to have a few areas that could be designated as quiet zones.

I think most of the crew deserve to earn hazard pay for the crowd that was sailing the week we were.

  8. Thanks for taking the time to write and post your review.

We have been to Bermuda a lot out of Boston and also out of NYC. We also like to cruise in suites and have our kids with us. They are almost 21 and 18 so I guess "kids" is a bit misleading. We have not booked a suite in the Haven yet. We sail in peak time when lots of families also are on-board. We were debating on the Breakaway for next summer since we have not been on her yet. Ultimately, we decided that we would book a nice suite on the Dawn again. After reading your experience in the Haven I am really glad that we booked the Dawn.

We really enjoyed our cruise on the Dawn--I also have a 20 year old, but she just returned from Europe, so had lawn mowing and pet sitting duty. I broke my rule of not sailing in the middle of the summer or during holiday weeks. On the Dawn we had great service being in a suite. Tim Kaminski the comedian played trivia on our team most days and it was so much fun and he ate my daughter's popcorn. Hope you have a good time on the Dawn too.

  9. Question about the air-conditioning: Did you need to have a card in the slot in order for it to work?

Yes there was a dummy card in the slot already. Not sure what the settings were when we arrived since my husband began changing them to the lowest blue dot (not the snowflake button). Believe they were all in the middle but not sure. It was very hot and humid. It got a little better when we got underway, and the bedrooms and bathrooms got sufficiently cold to sleep, but the main room had very little air flow. It seemed to me they were aware of the problem--just the vibe I got.

  10. Breakaway to Bermuda July 19th 2015

Well this cruise got off to a rough start. We followed the excellent directions we found on the East Coast Departures Board, but there happened to be a triathalon going on and NYC's finest would not let anyone through to park at the cruise port. Would have been nice to have received a warning from NCL ahead of time on how to get into the port-- couldn't go south on 57th, couldn't go straight on 55th. etc. We finally found 2 nice policemen who let us through--yikes it was a stressful 45 minutes going in circles. There was a family walking by us as we sat in traffic-- loudly fighting, cursing, punching and pushing each other, already pretty toasted and my 12 year old says- "They are probably going to the ship" and we had a good laugh. This group would now be known as the "street people" and not only were they on the ship with us, but on the same floor with us, with the rest of their extended family.

The car thermometer was already registering above 93 as we got to our parking spot--yea! finally!

Parking, security and getting our bags to the porters were all non-issues. Getting our room keycards was with no problems or long waits. Though there was a nice little notice for us saying that on Friday we would be leaving port at 3:00 rather than 5:00pm--no explanation and noboby at the time would explain. (Though I got free internet as a perk, and could read what was actually happening in the Bermuda paper). We were all checked in at about 10:55. We were sailing in the Haven for the first time, though we often sail in suites. It was completely disorganized getting on the ship--the worst suite embarcation ever. They decided to divide the group in two and lead them on at 11:30. They tell people to line up. We remain seated since it seems the majority of passengers got in the line, and I have no need to push my way on the ship. We can wait till the next group. It is very warm in the room and many of the passengers standing with us were getting pretty agitated. They move the line outside to stand in the ninety degree weather. They wait there, standing another 20 minutes. Not sure if the way it was done was the way the Breakaway always does it or if they were understaffed, but it was very unprofessional and that perk meant little. Ok first group is moving. Our group is now lining up against the windows. Then we are led outside to wait. The boarding starts for the rest of the ship and we are still waiting. Finally make it on the ship at around 12:10. Haven area is packed.

Were told initially that we could not drop our carryons in our room before going to lunch, that we need to check in with the concierge, so we proceed up to the Haven area. Concierge Anoop says to go drop off your bags--so we trudge with them back to our room. Our room was at least 95 degrees inside, ice in wine bucket melted, no ice in ice bucket. Room was not cooling off. Pre conciege email requests were not done. My husband calls our butler, to say that the room is still not cooling off, and the butler says to give it some time. We go to explore the ship. Decide to just go to the buffet since the Haven area is a madhouse. Buffet is set up nicely--but the selections seem more limited than on our previous cruises. They did have plenty of staff bussing the tables. Return to room, Our snacks were left around 2pm in the heat sitting out--yuk. Did not eat.

Ok, so that is the start of the vacation. A house on my street was struck by lighting last night, and I am tired and not sure anyone is interested in the blow-by-blow details, so I am just going to categorize and touch on the high and low points.

    Room:

2 Bedroom H4. Was smaller than the other SC's we have had. Lots of storage, much smaller main bathroom that is pretty, but the sinks make the counterspace very non-functional. Even with the bed placed sideways instead of straight to the bathroom, you still have a good view of the ocean when laying in bed. Main room never got cold--like it is a design problem with the HVAC. Kept the curtains closed in main room and that helped, kept the doors to the bedrooms open, but c'mon, I would like to look at the ocean. Table in main room very small--don't know how six would be able to eat at the same time. Wouldn't put six in this room. IMHO not comfortable for more than 4 passengers. Liked the on-demand free movies on the TV.

    Steward:

Excellent service. Received large tip on top of DSC. Filled out Hero card for him.

    Butler:

Adequate. Pre-concierge requests not done. Reminded my husband of his brother (which is not a good thing). Just very fake. We told him we liked cookies. No cookies delivered, had to ask for them. Did not do any in-room dining due to the lack of AC in the room. Snacks uninspired. Did bring items quickly when asked, not proactive. He received what from others is probably a good tip, but he would have gotten another hundred dollars added if he had tried harder to please. Not in the same league as other butlers we have had, maybe he is burned out from the tough NY/NJ crowd.

    Concierge:

Was not made to feel welcome. Did not really add any value for us, since we booked our restaurants ahead of time. Only saw him at boarding, when he chided us on Monday evening for missing the Captain's party while we were eating in a specialty restaurant, and on Saturday and Sunday morning. No tour of the Haven. I didn't know there was a sauna till the last day. There is no suite seating for shows like on other ships. Did not say goodbye when everyone was leaving--just sat at his desk staring at his computer screen. He received 50 percent of his tip, the rest of the tip we had allocated to him we gave to the serving staff in the Haven restaurant. Not sure when he arrived on the ship, but his role is not a good fit for him.

    Haven Area:

Very nice. Pool is not really usable, as others have said. Wish they would put in an endless pool, like they used to have on the Spirit or take out the loungers in the other two "pools". Only problem is parents not supervising their children. There were three large family groups using the area, and it was really monopolized by these groups. For example, my husband was trying to read in the area under the half screen in the back row--no real view, away from people. A family in the front row who had " reserved" the chairs with the view, took their about seven year old boy and plopped him down next to my husband and told him to stay there, while they went back to the front row and had their backs to him. A lot of really bizarre family interaction happened this week. On a sea day when most all of the loungers in the outside area of the haven were taken, I was dozing in and out and a little girl, just out of the pool or hot tub came out to talk to her parents and sat her wet bottom down on my legs! Parents said nothing. I said something and left the area. The ignorance, with a big splash of entitlement was something to behold. There was one group with at least 9 kids under 8 that continued to run around the inside area of the pool on both levels screaming. It sounded like a bunch of minions from Despicable Me. This group also had a baby with them which they let climb up and down the steps to the upper level without supervision, which made me really nervous. At one point in time I counted 25 children in one hot tub--honest. Let's just say we stayed out of that soup. I think the Haven really needs a designated quiet area--and have someone from the concierge staff enforce it. Maybe it is better during off peak times, it was certainly better in the Haven area than the main pool deck, which was a madhouse.

    Food:

    A very subjective area, YMMV

Teppanyaki-- food meh (compared to land teppanyaki restaurants), service bad (waitress would not look at us) took forever and we ended up missing our show at 7:00 (5:15 reservation).

Le Bistro--food very good, service very good

Cagneys-- 2x food good, service good

Haven restaurant-- hit or miss food, mostly good. Service very good. Wish the menu would be more seasonal--who wants to eat butternut squash soup when it is hot and humid out? Don't get the Beef with au jus sandwich--there is no au jus--really.

Buffet--liked the set-up and seating. plenty of people bussing tables, good selection at breakfast. Lunch selection not as varied as on previous ships. Did not eat dinner here.

Sushi Bar--my daughter had one roll at the sushi bar--food was good though slow.

    Kids Club:

My kid was in the Dolphin group. No problems attending. Was able to sign herself in without too much of a wait. Activities could have varied more. Told kids who were not going to perform in the circus show not to come the last sea day at all. Liked how they had a whole seperate floor for this age group. Bummer about the last day. My kid liked all the counselors except the American one--a really grumpy birthday girl.

    Ropes course and slides:

Fun. Waits not too bad. Could have used a few more staff members for putting on harnesses. On last sea day only half of the course was open due to the wind. So do the zipline when it is open--it is worth it.

    Entertainment:

Second City-- cast was the best we have seen--enjoyed their shows

Howl at the Moon--fun until some of the large groups gave large tips to have their little princess get up and sing a ballad--all verses. Kind of took the fun away. When the next request was for someone to sing a song from Frozen we walked out.

Didn't see Burn the Floor or Rock of Ages because we had no interest.

Fat Cats-- enjoyed Charlie Love--wish he would play more blues and less pop, believe he is asked to play the pop, but we had fun.

Trivia and other games-- Except for Ferdie, cruise staff was pretty bland and just going through the motions. Julie was Ok. "Prizes" given on the last sea day for participation were very lame, and we gave our activity cards to three little sisters so they could all get at least something. Some of the games were replayed on the tv channel, and the sexy leg contest was the most vulgar I have seen--it used to be funny, but now is just gross IMO. Was interesting having trivia on the atrium screen. First time we didn't exchange papers for scores, they have had problems with fights breaking out.

O'Sheehan's--liked the set-up of the games. Had fun bowling, darts and air hockey. Did not eat here.

Laundry: When I have had it done on other ships it came back very nicely folded or hung. This time it was in a crumpled ball, missing an item of clothing. Glad the missing item was not expensive or essential. It was disappointing.

Bermuda--have visited before. Did not use our $75 excursion credits because the excursions were way overpriced.

Day 1---Left ship right as it cleared (no priority suite debark). Got taxi to Tobacco Bay in St George $76. Got three beach chairs (I think $30). Had the place to ourselves for almost 2 hours--then it was swamped when the ferry got there. Had a great time snorkeling--see Mitsugirly's review for photos from her trip. Took cab back to St George $9, and ferry back to Dockyard $13 (tokens and student pass).

Day 2--on and off rain downpours. Took taxi to Horsehoe Bay $32. Visited the parrotfish in Baby beach cove, and then enjoyed body surfing for several hours. Rain was off and on, but we were in the water and already wet, so who cares? Beach was pretty empty. Walked around Dockyard for shopping later.

Day 3-- More unsettled weather. Since we had to be back at the ship by 2:30, we decided to go back to Horseshoe Bay again. Had a good time once more, though there was a strong rip current that developed around noon. Lifeguards were out helping people.

Overall personal takeaways from this cruise:

-If the UBP was not included, it would not be worth it to me to buy it--I just can't drink enough to make it worthwhile.

-It was fun to cruise out of NY once, but I have no desire to do it again.

    -Bermuda is still beautiful.

-NCL big ships are maybe not for me.

-Haven area has the potential to be great, but it could use some quiet areas, or have 2 areas, one for families and one for adults only.

-Food quality is IMHO declining, would rather have smaller portions of higher quality. I for one would like larger servings of veggies and less protein.

-I wont do any asian restaurant dining on NCL in the future--3 times now not so great, and I love asian food.

-I miss the stand-up comedians, jugglers and magicians.

-I hate having to pre-schedule everything.

We all had a lot of fun, but I am not sure that I got a good value for the price I paid to be in the Haven. Did not buy a future cruise credit. Very annoyed about the last minute change in port time--would have been furious if i had a boat booked or late tour. May be trying a different line, but none seem to be a good fit. Open to suggestions.

Oh, one last thing, On the paper we were given prior to getting on the ship it said that the Dinner show was complimentary the first night with UDP. I asked at the concierge desk and was told that it was still $49 (i think) and that the show was complimentary and the dinner was not. Made no sense whatsoever, and the person working the desk was not proficient in English (but very attractive) so I just gave up trying to get an explanation. Guess we got some old paperwork with our new port time.

Sorry if this review is disjointed--wanted to get it down while it is still fresh in my mind.

Will take any questions and try to answer them.

  11. Hi Everyone,

I just booked for a cruise in mid July on the Breakaway to Bermuda. Haven't sailed for just a little over 2 years, but have been trying to keep up with all the changes via this site. This is our first time in the Haven (not first in a suite) and first on a newer ship where you book entertainment. It is also the first time UDP and UBP. So if anyone can answer a few questions that I couldn't clear up from reading all the recent threads, I would really appreciate it.

    1. Do I need to book the shows ahead of time, or will I be able to sit in the designated suite area?

    2. As I understand it, with the UDP and UBP I will sign and get a receipt and then it will zero out on the bill--is this correct?

    3. I have a 12 year old who is not on the UDP, what price should I expect to pay at the specialty restaurants--is it still half?

    4. Should I book the specialty restaurants ahead of time or wait till on the ship or with the concierge? We are early eaters due to work schedule and in the past have not had a problem getting a seat except Teppanyaki.

    5. I understand that Ocean Blue is not included in the UDP--is there a 25 percent discount?

    6. If you want to eat on the waterfront, can you specify that when reserving?

    7. If I book the specialty restaurants before sailing, do I pay upfront and get reimbursed, or will it recognize the UDP?

    8. For those of you who have sailed in the Haven, when in the Haven area are there servers who will bring you drinks, or do you just go to the bar? Do you give extra tips to these servers as you go or do you give a tip at the end of the week, like with the butler and concierge?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer these questions.

  12. Thanks for the great review!

I really appreciate your reviews since I find that we have both sailed the same ships, and usually have very similar opinions of the trips/ships. My least favorite was the Star, and most favorite was the Spirit. In June of 2013 we went to Bermuda on the Dawn and had a great time, but the staff at that time was excellent and Bermuda was so beautiful and different.

So we haven't sailed in 2 years now, and I have a FCC burning a hole in my pocket. Last weekend I looked at your photos and really wanted to get in the water again. I started playing with mock bookings for the week my husband is already planning on taking off in July. No rooms available in the category that we like. Anyway, long story short, later I was telling him about how your pictures made me want to go again and he said lets see what is available, and a room popped up on the screen that was not there an hour earlier. We booked! The Breakaway in a few weeks!

So I have been in overdrive research/shopping mode for 5 days now. I have a few questions for you.

Did you see many taxis in St George and at Tobacco Bay? Were the bathrooms/changing areas similar to Horseshoe beach at Tobacco Bay? Thanks for your help.

  13. Hey Audigirly or OCDgirly!

I'm that crazy lady who sent you looking for superman at Maya Key in Roatan. Well I hope you feel better soon--it does stink to pick something up on vacation. It used to seem as if we alternated cruises, but I haven't sailed in two years now, but my last was on the Dawn to Bermuda, and reading all of Kev's posts was such a help--miss his posts too.

My youngest is glad to know that "her" parrotfish are still in the cove. She chased two huge suckers all day, and it was very difficult to make her come explore the other areas on the other side of the horseshoe. We did not use the public transportation, due to my husband's disability, but we had some friendly taxi drivers and some not so great and had some pleasant restaurant waiters and some that attempted to overcharge us. It just didn't seem at much different than anywhere else to me, but we did enjoy talking to people and the island is beautiful. I am curious to see if you attempted to snorkel at Church Bay. We had our taxi take us there, but it was just too steep for us all to make it down, and then up after spending time in the water.

There has been a lot of talk on this thread about the soda vs Pop etc. Check out the link below to an old NY times test which tells what part of the country you are from based on the words you use. I hope my link works, but it picked out where I grew up perfectly. Who knew there were so many different words for things like traffic circles?

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html?_r=0

Well have fun with the quiz and feel better soon!

  14. Hey Mitsugirly,

We sailed out of Tampa on the Star in Dec 2011 and just thought I'd give you something to consider if you end up flying in late in the afternoon or evening before the cruise. There is a Marriott right in the airport. Just walk down the hall and you are there. We didn't have any vacation days left so had to fly in late the day before the cruise and it was so easy--no car rental or cab fees and we actually had a decent meal in the airport. We were able to use the pool that night and the next morning since we are all water rats-ha! Easy to grab a taxi or shuttle in the morning. Have a great Fourth!

  15. Hey Kim,

Remember me? The crazy lady who sent you looking for superman on Maya Key? Just wanted to let you know your review is great, sorry the trip wasn't the best.

Coki beach looked like a great snorkeling day--I may have to go East Carib again. Thanks for all the sea life shots.

Don't know if I will be cruising this year, but I do want to go to the new NCL private island off Belize--Harvest Cay when it opens, and I keep hoping that NCL will put the Spirit in Baltimore.

Stay safe in Ohio today with the weather coming through. Thanks again for taking me (virtually) snorkeling with you!

  16. My family sailed the Dawn (sister ship) last June to Bermuda and my Fine Art student daughter did some watercolor painting. I think she found the biggest issue to be wind. There are some cut-outs toward the rear of the ship by the stairwells that she would set up her stuff and paint for a few hours. On the front of the ship there is a raised area above the jogging track with loungers, which could be stacked, to make room for an easel, but I don't know how feasible this would be due to wind/weather. I know she took along a small plastic spray bottle for water.

We still refer to colors as Cozumel blue and Maya Key green and know exactly what the other is referring to--just love the vibrant colors in the tropics. I have never been to the Mexican Riviera, but the rock formations and water look very interesting. Wishing you wonderful weather and a great trip.

  17. Happy New Year to you and your family. Thanks for letting me escape the snow and cold for a little bit. Your review is excellent as usual. I think your underwater images are pretty darn good--I think it is the most challenging photography. I agree with you about the Spirit being a favorite--my wish is that it would come back to the US and be left in Baltimore so I could drive to it. Thanks again for the fun review.

  18. Well, lets just say she is no Virginia. Maybe she will have improved in the two years since we had her on the Star when Adrian was on vacation. Our one reservation request was not made, had to proactively ask for invites to the things such as the early admittance to the chocolate buffet.

Really want to sail the Sun sometime. Have a great trip!
