  1. No, thank you two for keeping the old thread alive. Is the Lone Cabbage still open? I would recommend that place for anybody with a rental car and time to kill before a flight out.

Yes it is still open and yep lots of gators out there to see - it really is an interesting place to visit and have lunch at - it is out in the wilderness for sure

  2. 01/26/2010 UPDATE:

Be aware that traffic lights will be having cameras installed to catch anyone that runs a red light - the fine will begin at $125.00 and will keep rising each time you are "smiling you are on candid camera" also if you are NOT wearing your seatbelt, the first time is $126.00 soooooooooooo take warning OK?

  3. Shirley, mine is an unusual question, we will be staying at the Best Western Cocoa Beach for 2 nights before our cruise in Oct, is there a public service transport system I can use to take me to the nearest Walmarkt store from this hotel and also to take us to the dinassau store, I know that there is a Publix store near the hotel but they do not stock the tea I like but walmarkt does stock it. I always try to buy a good supply when I travel to America as this tea is not available in the UK. Please no-one tell me it is easier to hire a car to get around as my husband refuses to drive when on holidayso always use local transport systems wherever we go.

    Jewel

    Good morning Jewel,

First an early "welcome to the USA" for when you do get here in October - BW is so close to everything which will make it very nice for you - here is the link for the local transport system - now you will have to play with it by using Walmart's and Best Western address to find the best route - this transportation only runs on Atlantic Avenue, but they do have other stops - you can email them and the link shows the contact information

    Best of luck

    http://routefinder.ridescat.com/maps/customerinfo.php#

This link is in the information section of the first page - folks really have to sit down and read the whole information site and make notes for it really answers so many questions folks may have. It took a very long time to compile all that information for it was started by someone else and I took and kept adding to it until it became what it did - now I can not go back to edit any changes here in Brevard County so what I will do is UPDATES so that each and all will be well informed as to what is going on

  4. I used Budget getting in last week and Hertz getting out. Both were fairly quick and effecient. Budget did have the regular size shutle bus which was easier in and out and held more people comfortably. Hertz had two big vans caravaning together and we had to wait about a half hour for them to arrive at the pier.

I just wanted to take the time to sincerely thank you for your input - it really helps folks in trying to made decisions and also cuts time getting upset or irrated with not finding right answers

If folks would give their inputs on one thread then folks, I feel would like its a "safe zone"

    Thanks again

  5. I meant to add that you can go to the old thread and search for comments on different shuttle services to see which stands up to the test or search for shuttle services or even a particular one and it will give you more insight - the folks here really give their experience, good, bad and indifferent.

    Good luck

  6. Preston,

Thanks for all your service and assistance and pointing out the errors in my posts. Will miss the old thread, but agree it's time to retire it.

Shirley, they should make a "sticky" of you information post above. It has everything. Nice work!!:)

I do have a question. BIL and SIL used CBS to get from the airport and return. They liked it, but the guy made a lot of stops. We were driving passed the airport exit on the Turnpike (which I didn't make as the exit we were suppose to take to 528 for god knows what reason) when they were getting into the shuttle. We drove down past Kissemee befor eI realized we were going the wrong way and we turned around. We still beat them to the CI&S by 15 minutes. On the CI&S shuttle back to our car after the cruise, Cindy, one of the drivers, remarked that the Travelink shuttle was their favorite to get ot the airport.

Has anyone here used Travellink? Opinions?

Thanks and cheers to the brand new thread.

    Crew

Travelynx is the key shuttle for all the crew members from the port and also most of the hotels use them also they have been around for a long time. Most of the shuttles here are pretty reliable - go with your gut instint :-)) Make sure you tell most of shuttles services such as Beachbound, travelynx etc that you are off this board for your 10% off

Good luck and yes I do miss Preston for he is very knowledgeable and love his humor

  7. Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach are all thisclose to everything - the car rentals are about 3 miles or less --starting down from Hertz, Budget, Thrifty/Dollar, Avis, Enterprise - if all would research the old "I work in Port Canaveral" plus the new information that was listed, all answers can be reached.

    Thanks

    Shirley

  8. Amazing information on here, thank you so much, already cleared up some major issues I was having!!!

Quick question: Does anyone know how far it is from Thrifty to the Dock that the Dream would be at? (If that's possible...I don't really know how this stuff works! lol)

Anyway, I saw someone say that the best idea would be to drop the family/luggage off at the dock, then bring the car back and take the rent a car shuttle. Just wondering how long my family would be wondering around on the dock for! lol

    L8r,

As Preston would say, I believe, stay together and the port is about 2 miles from Thrifty.

You can refer back to the old thread and go to search or maybe someone will post that info OR go to the above information site and read it all the way through for there are maps, chamber of commerce information, Port Canaveral information and will answer ALL of your questions -

  9. Hey there everyone-

I found the other thread to be helpful.......

Trying to talk my Hubby into renting a car in PC-I would like to take the kids to the Brevard Zoo and then maybe to the Jetty Park to play-I know they have a playground. Kids are 2 1/2 and 4 1/2, got to get some energy burnt up- :O)

Hope it warms up soon-sailing in 9 days-woo hoo

    Debbie

good choices and YEP WE ARE OUT OF THE DEE[ FREEZE - broke all Florida weather records with the freeze we had - it was so unusual to go to work but had to get all the ice off the car first- don't know how folks do it up North, but I can tell you this, sure do respect all of those that have that experience every day of their lives in the winters etc.

  10. Shirley,

Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this thread also. You and Preston have complimented each other tremendously. To think that you've already begun to recreate the thread. Incredible:)

    You're the best.

    Annette

I am very sad that the other thread was closed down and I am really really hoping that Preston will come back - the information that was included here will change from time to time for places come and go and since it can not be edited to update the information, at least you have some head's up as to what is going on, The information could NOT have been done without Preston and I can NOt keep up what he was doing so with the capacity of being able to use BOTH of the threads, just maybe folks will find all their answers.

    Thanks for the kindness

  11. Hello to all,

I just wanted again thanks Preston and others that made it possible to put together all the above information to make choices easier for everyone - I do not endorse any of the places or businesses that have been put on the list. It is just to give you a little more insight especially if you are traveling here for the first time.

    Thanks again to all

    Always

    Shirley

PS forgot to add the link to the old thread in case you need to refer back to it at any time>

  12. This information is based on all the information that was put together from the thread created by PSbcap known as “I work in Port Canaveral”. Forever thanks to Preston, The Cruise Critic staff and all others for helping to make your travel needs easier.

OK I need to really bring each and all up to speed if you are returning a car back in here at Cape Canaveral.

I did some checking today and if you do NOT fill your gas tank before turning it in, you will be charged $6.999 a gal so save yourself a little bit of monies by stopping at one of the gas stations before you turn it back in.

Just food for though or should I say just gas for though ;-)

    Closest Hotels to Port Canaveral

All below 3 Cape Canaveral hotels are about 2 miles from the port and offer rooms with a view of the port, where you will be able to see the cruise ships in the morning. Be sure and sign up for the port shuttles. None of these 3 hotels are on the beach nor is it within walking distance of the beach (5 min cab ride). If you want the beach close, look for a hotel in Cocoa Beach – beachfront hotels are posted further down.

    ROOM INFORMATION PER REQUEST

None of the rooms will give you an ocean view since they are several blocks from the ocean. The standard rooms are only 2 stories. the suite buildings are 3 stories. For standard rooms and either the 200 or 400 building for suites. The 200 building is closer to the pool although the pool area may get quite noisy so if you want a quiet area request courtyard view. The most favorite rooms are in the 800 building 2nd floor facing the pool. Be aware that most of the pool side rooms are king rooms. There are just a few rooms with 2 beds facing the pool.

Due to the construction of high rise condo's, there are very few rooms that will give you small views of the ships unfortunalty none have a wide open view of the port any more.

There are no other parking options available in or around Cape Canaveral except for parking at your hotel if allowed.

When you exit the airport you will merge onto the Highway 528 (also called Beachline 528) and travel about 45 miles to Cape Canaveral. There is one toll to pay which is $1.25. There are no restaurants along the way until the highway ends and becomes a 4-lane surface street. Travel time: 45 mins.

All agree that the cheapest option is to rent a car one-way from the airport, drive to the port, drop luggage/family off at port, drop rental car off and take rental car shuttle back to the port. Repeat in reverse for your post-cruise trip back to the airport. Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Avis & Enterprise, all have drop off locations and free round trip shuttles very close to the port (companies are listed in order of closeness to the port). These four places are open on Sundays and their port shuttles start early in the morning until the afternoon.

Look to the left at the big white bldg with the blue roof and turn left between there and McDonalds. Go to the traffic light (2 blocks) and turn left. 13. The old one has been closed. I just wanted to thank all that made it so great. Almost 7500 post and over 350,000 hits has to make it one of the most successful on CC.

Here is a new one to carry on. I am retiring from posting and really hope all the information you got helped.

    Happy Crusing!

    Hello Preston,

I am so sorry that the original thread has come to a close, but I sincerely hope that you will stay on with this one since you offer so much to so many that rely on you for so much information AND mostly most of all, your sense of humor would be missed especially by me.

Good luck and I know that this one will exceed the old thread.

    Always

    your friend

    Shirley

  14. and here is a list to help you ;-)

    Car Rental

All agree that the cheapest option is to rent a car one-way from the airport, drive to the port, drop luggage/family off at port, drop rental car off and take rental car shuttle back to the port. Repeat in reverse for your post-cruise trip back to the airport. Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Avis and all have drop off locations and free round trip shuttles very close to the port (companies are listed in order of closeness to the port). These four places are open on Sundays and their port shuttles start early in the morning until the afternoon.

National does not have shuttle service to the port. Enterprise has a location on Merritt Island which is a barrier island between the mainland and the beach. They will shuttle you both ways during normal business hours which are M-f 9-6 and Sat 9-12. The closest Dollar car rental is on South Babcock in Melbourne which is about 20 to 25 mins away from the port.

Your best bets are Hertz, Budget, Thrifty, Avis and Enterprise. (these are in order as closest to the port)

Look here for car rental coupons and discount codes:

    http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=558119

Enterprise Car Rental is now located in Cape Canaveral where Hertz once was

Address is:6211 North Atlantic Avenue, Cape Canaveral 32920

    Phone number is 321-866-0324

    fax number is 321-866-0325

    http://www.enterprise.com/

The General Manager is Shakeira Tennort and what a sweetie - she said they have 4 shuttles to and from the port - open at 7AM and closes at 6PM - Stopped by today and spoke to Shakeira the assistant manager and now they are opened 7 days a week. The email address is shakeira.l.tennort@erac.com

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO TELL THEM YOU ARE OFF THE BOARD OK?

Their hours are Monday to Friday 7:30AM to 6PM and Saturday & Sunday 8AM to 4PM

Avis car rental has agreed to meet or beat prices per Bob Fink

Also remember you have Jeremy that is a great guy and will do what he can to help you - another of my favorite places

    http://www.aviscapecanaveral.com

12/12/2007 Their email is STILL out of order so the best I can tell you is when you go to their website, use either their local phone number or fax number.

    Always

  15. It is one block east of Mo's and Faustos....pink building located between Catherine and United on White Street

Hey Clay how long have you lived in Key West and I agree that the ones you suggested are the best even though the old owners sold out several months ago - are the old locals still going there like Harry Knight? Just curious.

    Thanks
