  1. Thanks guys! I think we're just going to do Cabbage beach in the morning, then hang out and walk around in the middle of the day. If we still want to do the beach we'll head over to Junkanoo for the afternoon. That evening we'll do Senor Frogs :)

  2. We're in the same situation- trying to decide what is worth it in Nassau. We've done the hotel beach resorts at a few different ports, but this port just doesn't have many options that seem to stand out. We did the Wyndham (Cable Beach) the last time we were in Nassau and it just wasn't impressive.

The only things included at Melia are the pools, beach, snorkel gear, and the use of chairs. Towels, non-motorized sports, transportation, and food & drinks aren't included. (I just got an email back about this today). That seems pricy for... esp. b/c we prefer the beach and don't necessarily need the empty or nice pools (although that's a plus). $70 for a nice beach... I'll have to think about it!

Hmmm I might look into Breezes next... I just don't know what to do here!

  3. We have an extremely long day in Nassau: 8am-1am. Does anyone have advice what to do during this time? We are only doing a 5-day cruise so we want to take advantage of every minute and enjoy the port (being on the ship is not an option).

We are four adults in our mid-twenties and would prefer DIY ideas. We like the convenience of DIY and we like to save $$ so we can put it towards other things. We love the beach, hiking, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, etc.

We've been to Nassau before and spent the day at the Wyndham, it was nice but there wasn't much to do. We've seen the Hilton and the beach doesn't look impressive for $60/pp, so we don't want to do that.

I've looked into Melia but idk if it's worth the $35/pp w/o food for just the pools and beaches (non-motorized equipment & towels aren't included). Do they have off-shore snorkeling...and is it any good? Otherwise it might be worth it.

Our other option would be just to stick w/ Junkanoo beach. Or is there a better beach to visit? ...or something else to do?

That night we're thinking about doing Senor Frogs. We've been there before during the afternoon and it was fun. Unless there's better place near the ship for nightlife? We probably don't have to be back on the ship until 11pm or 12am.

Any ideas/advice would be very much appreciated!!!

  4. Here's an update from our trip:

-We took a cab and got to the Acropolis by 7:30. We were the 1st visitors up to the Parthenon

-We were in great shape, so just beware. However, we finished with 3 hours to spare and didn't feel rushed at all!! So it is definitively doable. We even had a sit-down lunch in the Plaka.

  5. 1st question:

What is the easiest/quickest way to get from Civitavecchia to the Colosseum? We are planning on walking to the train station, but then what trains do we take to reach the Colosseum?

    2nd question:

What is the easiest/quickest way to get from St. Peter's Square back to the cruise port?

    THANKS :)

  6. Messina is the last port on our 14 day cruise so we want to just keep it relaxing. Does anyone know of a place that offers wifi (preferably free or with a purchase) in Messina near the dock?

  7. We're doing a tour in Ephesus in the morning, so I think we'll probably just feel like relaxing in the afternoon. Does anyone know about places to access wifi near the port? I read that Starbucks does? Is this close, or is there anywhere else? (We would like to find free wifi so we can buy drinks or snacks)

    THANKS!

  8. Thanks!! This is our first port after 2 days at sea, so hopefully we'll be well rested and ready to explore!

Hey concertfan :) We're on the same cruise!

Just wanted to pop in here and tell the OP and concertfan that we used two of Rick Steve's podcasts in Athens and it worked well (went in June 2012). I would advise both of you to go straight to the Acropolis as early as you can. We didn't arrive there until about 10:15 a.m. or so and the line was about an hour long. We did the Acropolis and then lunch in Restaurant Row/Plaka. Then we did the podcast from Syntagma Square through the shopping streets (the latter wasn't really that interesting) with some more wandering around the Plaka and window shopping before returning to the ship using the Metro.

We skipped the Agora as by then in our cruise we were a bit ruined out (had already done Rome/Istanbul/Ephesus).

  9. I'm going to assume you've put the Acropolis first in order to get there before the crowds. However, your planned route is a little cumbersome. If you have the time, get a taxi as early as you can and have them run you by the stadium first. Grab a photo, then have them drop you off at the Temple of Zeus (you can get your inclusive ticket here for all the other sites). After seeing this, walk down Dionysiu Areopagitou to right below the Theatre of Dionysus. From here it's a pleasant walk up to the Acropolis and you can see the Theater on your way up.

Coming down, it would make sense to go to the Agora next (the Temple of Hephaestus is actually in the Agora). The Roman forum is right next to the Agora, if you want to see it; the Temple of the Winds is certainly interesting and your ticket includes it.

There are some reasonable places on Adrianou street to stop for a quick bite beside the Agora. Also, the green line metro (which takes you back to Piraeus) is right next to the Agora.

Frankly, I would recommend skipping Syntagma Square; it's not much to see (although pleasant). Use any extra time to spend in the small museum in the Agora or the Roman forum.

Yes, I messed that up. Acropolis first. Thank you so much for your advice!

  10. I find the Plaka touristy and definitely missable if you are not into shopping for souvenirs or eating what is, for the most part, food that is geared for tourists. (Yes, there are a few good restaurants in the area, but perhaps better experienced if one is staying in Athens and can go there for dinner.)

To the OP: I can't see anything when I click on your link. Can you describe what you have planned?

    Yes, thanks!

    It's basically:

    1) Taxi from cruise port to Anafiotika

    2) Acropolis

    3) Theater of Dionysus

    4) Temple of Zeus

    5) Ancient Olympic Stadium

    6) Walk through gardens to Syntagma Square

    7) Ancient Agora

    8)Temple of Hephaestus

    9) Monastiraki Station, or taxi if we're lacking on time to get to the port

  11. Barcelona; Toulon; Livorno; Civitavecchia; Naples; Mykonos; Istanbul; Kusadasi; Athens; Venice

And trying to do most stuff on our own has definitely kept me busy.

    Me too!!!

We're also doing Civitavecchia, Istanbul (sort of), Kusadasi, Athens, and Venice.

    Livorno:

Let me know what you decide for Livorno. I think we might have to give in and take a tour to Pisa/Florence so we're not stressing out. From what I've read it seems stressful to try to make it to both on our own. We'll see..

    Rome:

    I got this from:

    Kusadasi

Our cruise ship just switched from Izmir to Kusadasi, so I'm not sure about that one anymore. It should make it easier since it's closer to Ephesus. What are you doing for that? That's another place where we're considering taking a private tour with other CC members. With 10+ people it's $45pp w/ lunch which doesn't seem bad. I can give you more info on that tour if you're interested.

    Venice

Our cruise leaves and arrives in Venice. Haven't looked at that yet either.

    Istanbul

We will have day-long layovers in Istanbul, but our actual cruise doesn't stop there. I haven't started planning this yet.
