  1. More than happy to. We are trying to do as much on our own as possible since many of the tours are pricey and include things that we don't really want to do. I'm trying to gather as much info as possible, so if there are other things you are planning to do on your own, let me know and we may give those a try to test out.

We are the same way! Where all are you going?

  2. On what date will you be at the Acropolis? My wife and I will be there June 20th and would be very interested how your day turns out. I've been doing some research to do exactly what you are planning.

    Thanks!

    Steve

We won't be there until later July. You will have to let me know if it works out & if you have any advice :)

  3. Presumably buses in Virginia only take dollars? So why expect buses in the Eurozone, which has a population greater than the US, to accept other currencies?

No need to be rude. We don't use public transportation here, so this is all new to us. We're simply trying to be prepared so that we can make the most out of our trip. Hopefully that makes sense :)

  4. The Valletta bus terminal is located just outside the city walls west of the historic city center, about 1 kilometer from the cruise port. You can walk there (20 minutes) or a take a taxi (€ 10, 4 persons, one way). From the bus terminal in Valletta you can take a bus to Mdina. Bus N° 51, 52 and 53 run every 10 minutes and take you to Mdina in about half an hour. A ticket costs € 2.60 per person (valid all day). You can buy it on the bus or at one of the ticket machines at the bus terminal. You can check the timetable in advance. Or you can take bus 52 from the station Floriani

Get off at Rabat, the urban district of Mdina. From there it's 500 meters on foot to the historic city center.

Mdina is located about 15 kilometers from Valletta. A taxi ride will cost between € 20 and € 25 per taxi (4 persons one way) and takes about 20 minutes.

Wow, thank you!! That is so helpful!!

  5. Thanks for your quick response! I guess I should make it clear that we're in our mid-twenties and used to walking/hiking in the heat for long periods of time. So my main concern would be if we have enough time to see these places and get back to the ship. We aren't really interested in the museum. Maybe another time if we have more than just a day :)

  6. Yes the link worked great. So how are you getting from the ship to Point A? When I first looked at the map I thought that was a lot of walking but it really isn't. I will have to do something similar. These are all the sites I am interested in seeing. I keep looking at the HOHO bus map and I don't really think that is for us.

    Thanks!

Shannon- I see you're going about a month before us. If you try this, you'll have to let me know how it worked :)

  7. Any advice for what to do in Malta? We're there from 8am until 6pm. I was thinking about doing Mdina in the morning, and then heading back to Valletta for the afternoon. Is Mdina worth it, and if so, how do you get there?

We aren't quite sure what to do while in this port. We're interested in walking around and taking pictures, not so much into museums. Any advice would be great (for both Mdina and places to see in Valletta).

    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE :)

  8. Thank you all for the quick responses!!!!! It is reassuring to read (and see) that Messina is worth it. That tower looks fascinating, I can't wait :) THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  9. This is the last of 9 ports on our 14 day cruise. So we would ideally like to keep it as cheap as possible.

We aren't into museums, but do enjoy learning about different cultures. We don't mind walking around for long distances. Does anyone have any pictures or advice for what to do?

I've noticed a lot of reviews say to head to Taormina, but I haven't seen many reasons why. Plus, unless it is really a MUST DO, we would rather try to save our money for the other ports. We're also going to places such as Athens, Rome, Ephesus, so we will be seeing a lot of historic artifacts earlier in the trip.

Any help or advice would be beneficial, and I thank you in advance!! :)

  10. So I've been reading about ways to get to Oia from the port, and I'm still unsure what is our best option. Our ship gets in at 2 and leaves at 10. How much is a taxi? Would it be worth it to take it to Oia and then walk back if we have time? I've read about the boat, is that a better option than the taxis? Does that save time, then?

Thank you for any advice. We are in our mid-20s and enjoy hiking, so this is not a concern for us. We just want to make the most of our time, so we don't want to waste it if hiking isn't worth it.

  11. How far away is the beach from the port? How do you know where to go on the beach? Are there good and bad parts on the beach? Also, could anyone tell me about the snorkeling off of the beach. Are there places to rent equipment (& how much)? Are there better areas for snorkeling, and how do you find them?

Sorry I have a lot of questions, I have no clue what to expect because I've never been here before!
