1. A group of 10 of us will be going to port from Newark airport. 10 people and luggage plus carry-ons. I have talked to a few agencies that have 11 or 14 passenger vans. Some say an 11 passenger van will be sufficient. One even told me we'd need 2 vans.

Can anyone give me names of reputable agencies and if they have used them for a large group or not?

  2. Last September a friend was taken to a hospital in Rhodes, Greece for 5 days. Then he had to take a plane to catch up with us in Rome.

He was reimbursed for hospital, air ticket and missed cruise days that his own insurance didn't cover.

Just like insurance for your home or car, you may never need it but it's great to have when you need it.

  3. We just returned from cruising the Greek Islands of Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini.

In Rhodes, we just walked the short distance and stopped for refreshments at a local restaurant. We didn't go into the castle, if you even could, but walked around it.

We took a taxi to Oia. At first the driver was very quiet then he opened up and showed us some awesome sites. He took us to an overlook where we could see Oia.

There was shuttles that took you to Mykonos. There we walked around the shopping area and up to the Windmills. Some friends took some 4 wheelers out and had fun doing that.

  4. I arranged a company Sicilytravel.net to take my group of 9 to Taormina. After waiting 45 minutes, and not showing up, we took a taxi. They dropped us off and we arranged a time to meet back. His name was Salvatore, but I'm sorry I don't remember the taxi name. It was definitely cheaper than I had arranged with the tour company.

  5. We just returned from the Eastern Mediterranean cruise and stayed prior to sailing at the Best Western Spring House. It was a short walk to the Vatican.

Staying a day after the cruise at the Hotel Rex (an authentic Italian hotel) which was 10-15 min. walk to the Colosseum.

I would highly recommend both and the price was very reasonable.

  6. Our time in Rome before and after our 10 day cruise was such an experience.

We flew in a day early to tour the Vatican spending the night at the Best Western Spring House. It was such a nice hotel. In all of the emails they were very helpful. Getting in very early, they stored our luggage while we toured the Vatican. The hotel arranged pick-up from the airport and the next day taking us to the port. They were on time and very helpful.

From reading Rick Steve's books, I found a tour company CBM (Can't Be Missed). Every email was responded to quickly. Stefano met us at the Vatican as arranged. He spent several hours with us showing us the Vatican, St. Peter's Basilica as well as the Sistine Chapel. You could tell he was very knowledgeable from giving tours for 15 years.

The day returning from the cruise we were picked up by a company arranged by our hotel (Hotel Rex). The two gentlemen were a little late and offered no reason or apology. They didn't speak at all on the 1 1/2 hr ride to the hotel. The same company took us to the airport the next day but we had different drivers and they were much better. They pointed out places on the way and made sure we arrived at the airport in plenty of time.

The Hotel Rex was built in 1887 and was an authentic Italian hotel. The rooms were quite large, the beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were clean. The breakfast the next morning was a typical Italian breakfast.

Both hotels were in walking distance (approx. 10-15 min.) of the Vatican & Colosseum.

Our guide for the Colosseum and the Forum was also very knowledgeable. He told little stories which helped me to remember things about the places we were looking at.

I would definitely recommend the hotels, the transportation and the tour guides.

  7. I have AT&T for my IPhone 5S and they told me I could get 30 minutes for $30. In reading Rick Steves, he said he buys a prepaid phone and a sim card when he gets into port. Has anyone had experience with purchasing one of these prepaid phones? Wonder which would be the better deal?

  8. I have read many posts on exchanging currency into Euros. Some say the rate is better at an ATM. The ATM will charge a fee and my bank will charge a fee of i.e. 3% or $5 whichever is greater.

The exchange rate today is 1 EUR = 1.35874 USD or 1 USD = 0.735976 EUR.

So if I exchanged in the US before travel, for $500 I would get 368 Euros. If I used an ATM I would probably get the same amount of Euros but have to pay $15 plus whatever the ATM would charge.

Am I thinking it to death? How is that a better deal?
