  1. To give a semi-educated answer to your question, we would need to know a few more things:

    - Are the design limitations for the Carnival Pride the same as the ones for the NCL ships? That they are all cruise ships, doesn't mean that all can safely tender ashore in the same weather conditions.

    - Are NCL and Carnival's rules concerning tendering in adverse weather the same? Carnival may have more restrictive rules which could've prevented the Pride's Captain from tendering, even if he wanted to do so.

    - Were the weather conditions identical at the time of the Pride's arrivals as when the NCL ships arrived? It's not uncommon for one ship to make it in and the next one not make it a few minutes later, specially if the conditions were hovering right at its max limit.

    - Were both cruise lines using the same company to tender people ashore? The decision to cancel the tendering process may have come from a third party, in which case Carnival would've had no choice but to leave, while NCL could've still been able to tender.

Even if circumstances had been identical, there's one HUGE factor: Captain's comfort level. If the Captain doesn't feel its safe, it's not safe. Is he a wimpy Captain, or are the Captain of the other ships daredevils? The answer is neither one. As long as the Captain has a good reason to err on the side of safety, he can play it conservatively. And as long as he's not violating any rules and regulations, he can push the operation to its authorized limit, but never beyond it. Captain's have some wiggle room to make decisions because, even if the rules say they can do something, their gut instinct and years of experience may tell them otherwise.

That's why he gets paid a Captain's salary, to make Captain's decisions and to keep you safe to the best of his personal abilities while you're spending your time sipping on your drink of the day and listening to the music band, not second guessing his decisions and trying to play armchair Captain.

what about the differences in the physical systems of the various ships?

Consider the following HYPOTHETICAL situation: if the NCL ship's propulsion system is operating at 100% efficiency, then the decision made by that captain is different than the decision made by a different captain who has a propulsion system operating at 94% efficiency; etc.

I think you get the point.

Your anecdotal analysis of the current weather conditions might well have been as valid as any ship's officers', but I cannot help but believe that they have much more data [e.g., long-range weather analyses, reports from various ship departments, etc.] that makes their decision superior to yours, or mine.

  2. I was looking at the new longer itineraries offered out of New Orleans and when I did a mock booking for cabin 9472 or 9475 they showed up in the premium balcony category. These two cabins used to be the cost of a normal balcony cabin and considered a great cabin choice for the money since they have a huge wrap balcony.

I checked a random future cruise on the Magic out of Galveston and noticed the same thing. Did Carnival change the price of these cabins for all future cruises?

We just came off Carnival MAGIC on December 7, 2014. We were in cabin 9475. This cabin is now classified as category 9C.

Our last cruise on MAGIC prior to this was in Spring, 2013. For that cruise, we were in cabin 7454 (L-shaped room), and I prefer that over 9475.

The interior for 9475 is cramped in comparison to 7454 and has only the stool at the vanity desk to sit at. At least in 7454 there is also a chair. The bathroom in 9475 is smaller than in 7454, also.

This was our first time in an aft-wrap cabin, and I strongly suspect it will be our last time also. The aft-wrap balcony is longer, but it is narrower in the extreme. Barely has room to walk by a chair/lounger, so what is the purpose?

If you like your stateroom with a cramped interior, and a matching cramped balcony, then 9475 is for you.

  3. I see. You are a rule follower unless breaking them benefits you. I don't want to be the one to burst your bubble, but that is not a rule follower. Speaking of bursting. Sure hope that wine doesn't leak or burst, ruining your clothing and quite possibly those of others.

You can follow the rules and carry on a bottle of wine for each adult. And wine is available by the bottle or they have some great wine packages.

Nothing wrong with people being honest . . . Nothing wrong, but extremely rare nowadays. At least now I know who not to believe when I see them on the ship.

    Have a nice cruise.

  4. I've had the flu a few times and lived to tell about it as do most people who get it. There's also a vaccination for it. So while I personally am not freaking out over Ebola, it is fact that it's almost always deadly if you get it. It's not unreasonable to be concerned.
    (( my emphasis )).

As I said, the CDC says 36,000 in the USA alone die per year from the flu. Yes, there are vaccines for the flu - but have you not heard? All the vaccines are not 100% effective against all strains of flu since the virus mutates.

Ebola is sourced in one general area - West Africa. Unless you have been travelling there, or come into contact with someone from that region, you do not have a valid reason to worry about Ebola.

Second, Ebola is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids. So, does that describe you? Also, a person who is infected with Ebola is not contagiious unless said person is symptomatic for Ebola.

Yes, there are Ebola cases in the USA. But, that is because the individuals were travelling from West Africa, or had come into contact with someone from that area.

So, if you people are concerned about Ebola due to an upcoming trip to the Caribbean - and with no other medical reasons - I would like to hear your reasoning.

And, if you decide that that snarky response "Well, I had the flu, but survived" is an intelligent remark in the face of the 36,000 people who died here, I would also like to hear your medical reasoning.

Please think things through, and if necessary pretend you are an adult.

  5. Has anyone heard of any port changes or scares of Ebola or worried about Ebola on any of the Carnival Caribbean cruises?

Per the CDC, approximately 36,000 people in the USA die due to the flu annually and now you want to worry about ebola?

  6. the USCG does not charge for its services (in this case the medevac flight to a hospital). Once at a hospital, then it is on the patient/patient's family to pay for onward flight/transport. Hence, purchase travel insurance *IF* it fits your situation.

The reason the USCG does not charge for its services is that they do not want people in other future situations to NOT contact them because they are scared of a potentially high bill.

  7. Good luck! I just printed out boarding passes for a cruise that is not currently paid. It allowed me to print out all the regular cruise documents. I selected the wrong cruise which is how I found out that you can ( at least in this instance) can print boarding passes before paid n full.

I think your TA screwed up and is "fixing it" otherwise you would be fighting to not have them book you at today's date.

    Enjoy the cruise!

Sent from my iPad using Forums

I was able to print out boarding passes for a cruise before it was fully paid.

I would really demand - politely, but strongly - that your TA show you unequivocal proof that Carnival was paid the full amount due. **IF** they give you that, then you have ammunition when you talk with Carnival about a discount/OBC/whatever.

**IF** the TA cannot show you proof that everything was paid in full to Carnival, and **IF** indeed they did make a mistake, then it is time for a serious talk with your TA about making you right. They are a business, and should be handling things professionally. Just because they are some smaller family-run agency, they are not absolved of their responsibilities.

Look at it this way - If you did not pay the TA the full amount due, and they covered for the amount you omitted, do you think they would contact you later about making things right?

  8. I don't know if they were following this conversation, but the flight I was going to book is gone. I am going to stay hands off for a few days and if it stays gone, I am going to book SWA as a big Eff You to American.

that you think it is AA's fault the seat is gone. YOU are the one who decided to hold off on making the reservation. So sorry that someone else on this planet thought that that flight met their needs.

Doesn't AA allow for a 24-hour hold on a final reservation before requiring full payment [in either cash or FF miles]?

I have no idea about your intended itinerary but it would not hurt you to call AA and see what they can do about getting you an award seat. Quite often the CSR has access to more flights than do customers on the web.

Since US Airways now accepts AA FF miles for award travel it is possible that US Airways might get you an award seat. Again, I have no idea about your flight itinerary so do not know if US Airways can help.

Booking an award seat over the telephone normally costs the caller approximately $25 if they are non-elite with the airline. Some people see that as reasonable, others refuse to pay it [those are the folks who cut off their nose to spite their face].

    Have a nice life.

  9. So what would your choice be with those who lie? We all know there are those who lie to not lose their money because "It's my vacation and I spent x many dollars and I didn't buy insurance and I WILL CRUISE". If Carnival doesn't give them the refund, someone on here will say call again until you get the answer you want.

There are those who lie for anything/everything and the rest of us pay for it one way or the other.

do not mind dealing with those who lie, send me a PM. I have some very interesting structures in NYC to sell you.

Seriously, "What would my choice be?" To not interact with them for ANYTHING - sorry if you do not like that, but remember YOU asked for MY choice.

  10. And someone answers dishonestly and 500 other cruisers get sick from noro, or the flu, or whatever, and Carnival is again all over the news because one sick cruiser didn't buy insurance and lied to get on board.

again, we need a "like" button on here!

so, some folks believe it okay to infect any number of other boarding passengers [as long as they themselves are not inconvenienced!],

and lie to both carnival and the travel insurance company.

why bother even dealing with such?

  11. no passport... just license and birth certificate

you are not getting some form of discount based on your residence, you will have no problem.

    But, you should consider . . .

    A) obtaining a passport. Yes, it costs a few dollar more BUT it is good for several years. So, you can consider it as only "$x for each year of a 10-year period." This will save you hassles in the future for any/all future trips; OR

    B) go to your new state of residency and get a State ID card as opposed to a new DL. The State ID card costs only a few dollars and will work.

  12. try cruiselinerooms dot com for pictures

no idea about the TV but I would guess no to headphones

I went to the website you mentioned and was pleasantly surprised that there were actual photographs of room 9472 [opposite corner to us]. I was afraid that I would only be able to find "generic room photos" and not something more precise.

And, I did google Carnival Magic 9475 and found a video of 9472. Thanks to the folks who told me to do that [i never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer].

  13. I know a person is allowed one bottle of wine in their carry on- but I do not see anything on the CCL web site about the size allowed. Does this apply to only the standard 750 ML or can a person bring a magnum ( 1.5 L) ?

    Thanks!!!

    Shirley

one 750 ml bottle per adult.

I chickened out one time - I wanted to bring four individual Champagne splits aboard because the four splits total 750 ml. (Don't ask why I wanted to bring splits; long b-o-r-I-n-g story). However, I was told that I MIGHT get three bottles confiscated because the port inspectors could take them saying "only one bottle" regardless of the fact that the total amount of champagne was within limits.

  14. The info said $49 per adult.....that's what it says on the ecursion page anyway

    I'll email my pvp...

in the notes on the Carnival website - after you click on the link to buy the F2F excursion - that the price is NOT per person, but per cabin [one adult must make the purchase].

I hope you get F2F [if you want it]. I suspect that by the time you communicate with your PVP there will be a good chance it will be sold out [but, I hope not].

Please fill in the following blank:

"I ask a question, and then when I get the answer, I completely ignore it because: _______________________________________________. "

  15. Good day,

pretty sure this has been asked in the past, but I cannot locate any answer.

Do the TVs on MAGIC allow someone to plug in headphones? Pretty sure I know what the answer will be, but I have to ask.

BTW, we will be on MAGIC departing Nov 30 in cabin 9475 (category 9C); anyone happen to have some pictures of this cabin.

    TIA

TYVM Ontario_Cruiser. But can you tell me how you found that info at JH's blog? I went to his website, typed DIVE IN MOVIE in the search box and came up only with utterly useless/dated information.

BTW, I tried to PM this reply only to you, but failed there also. You may PM me if you like.

    TIA

  17. Exaclty but in the case of the OP, she was freaking out because the daughter wouldn't be able to use her licence. To me it sounds weird. Like there is a bunch of fuss over nothing (besides the fact that the daughter should get this done). Just go to the DMV and get a state ID. Does exactly the same thing as the DL does when needed for traveling. Even can be scanned.

    you missed the obvious.

The OP posted on May 17, a Saturday, saying that they were leaving on Sunday [May 18].

Since there DMV office was not open on the weekend, she could not "Just go to the DMV and get a state ID." That is what precipitated her panicky situation.

My personal guess? Since it is now May 20 and the OP has not posted anything else, I am guessing everyone got on board.

  18. I just purchased FTTF yesterday for my cruise in August.

Honestly, I can't believe they are offering this service for only $50. I was ready to pay $50 per person, then I found out that the $50 covered all three in my cabin!! Yatzee!! They could charge more and people like me who hate lines would still buy it.;)

And FYI, I have only taken a few cruises on Carnival (this will be my 4th), but I have 16+ with Royal, and am pretty high up in their rewards program. If Royal offered this service, it wouldn't bother me at all, I have never much cared about what other people do or don't do.

The main reasons I got FTTF were

    1. To tender in GC without huge lines.

    2. I like getting my bags early.

    3. I am going to try to get off the ship as late as I can since my flight home isn't til 7:30pm.

I don't really care about getting on first.

First, a good number of PLAT cruisers achieved their status under the set of rules in play way back when (i.e., after you complete so many cruises, you are a PLAT).

Then Carnival changed the rules to a specific number of cruise days are required to be ranked as a PLAT. Will one [or more] or you "old time PLATs" answer this question - When Carnival changed the rules, did you say 'Well, gee, I have not cruised that many days. Maybe I should surrender my PLAT benefits?' I do not think so. I think you said, "We got our privileges fair and square and that is that."

So, why do SOME PLATs begrudge people who have bought FTTF?

FTTF is a service that Carnival has offered for a price. No one has to buy it. The people who do buy it obviously think the program has some value for them. PLATs do NOT have to sacrifice any of their benefits. And, the benefits for being a PLAT are more than FTTF [laundry, for example].

So why the big hangup? If this were the only thing I had to gripe about, life would be good.

  19. SO IT'S KINDA LIKE A "I GOT ON BEFORE YOU" SLAP TO THOSE THAT WEREN'T "FAST ENOUGH" TO GRAB THE MERE 20 THAT ARE SOLD TO MAKE THE REST OF THE PEOPLE FEEL BAD WHILE EVERYONE WHO DID GET ONE GLOATS OR BRAGS. SOUNDS UNFAIR TO ME. AND FRANKLY KINDA NOSE-UP-IN-THE-AIR-ISH. WE ALL PAID OUR MAX AFFORDABLE TO ENJOY THE SAME CRUISE. WHY SHOULDN'T EVERYONE'S ROOMS BE READY AT THE SAME TIME:confused: WHY SHOULDN'T EVERYONE BE FREE TO DROP OFF THEIR BAGS IN THEIR ROOM AND ROAM THE SHIP THE MOMENT THEY GET ON OR JUMP IN THE JACUZZI OR POOL OR WHATEVER. OR WHY SHOULD EVERYONE ELSE HAVE TO WAIT IN LINE FOR ANYTHING? OH HEY....THAT'S LIFE! CALL ME A POOR SPORT? IT'S CALLED SPEAKING THE TRUTH AND I'M SURE I SPEAK FOR HUNDREDS OF OTHERS. IT'S NOT FAIR NOR IS IT RIGHT TO THE REST OF THE CRUISERS.

to take you meds (sounds like you missed them when you posted the above).

The OP wanted to know if FTTF was "worth it". I posted my experiences with it -- in other words, I stated why it was worth it TO ME.

If you re-read my OP you will notice that I said I purchased it on our first cruise. Please tell me how a total newbie -- someone on their first cruise -- can possibly be considered as gloating over everyone, when I know nothing about the voyage I am on.

I simply posted why it was worth it TO ME. That way, other individuals could consider if it might be worthwhile to them (e.g., maybe they do not want to spend their time working out in uncrowded conditions, etc.).

If you do not want F2F, fine. If you do want F2f, fine. But please do not attribute negative thoughts to people when you have absolutely no idea what is going on.

    Have a nice life.

  20. Can you expand on that? Which floor houses the spa showers and which houses the gym showers? I've tried to figure it out from cruise deck plans dot com but I can't seem to visualize it. Do you have to check into at the spa desk in order to use the gym showers? We've four in a cabin this fall and I suspect we're going to want to use them - frequently!

so it may be that you have to "check in" at a desk to use the gym or the gym showers.

The reason I say that is the Spa areas and Gym areas are in the same part of the ship on the Spa Deck.

BUT, it will not be a problem -

    (a) Spa users generally have a colored wrist band identifying themselves as Spa users. No wrist band, no using the Spa [hence, no necessity to check in].

    (b) classes are scheduled in the Gym [yoga, PT type classes, etc.], so people have to be able to access the Gym in order to attend a class. There is no requirement, however, to enroll in any class in order to use the Gym facilities, including the locker room or the Gym shower.

Do not worry, you will have be able to use that facility.
