  1. If the weather is bad enough that someone can't get a flight out to get to Florida, it's likely they won't be able to drive to the port, either. Northeast airports are very good at managing snow. It has to be a snowmageddon Nor'easter for SYR, BUF, EWR, JFK, ALB, MHT, BVT, BOS, PVD, BDL, SCE, CLE, PIT, LGA, etc. to close. If they do, chances are that 81, 87, 93, 95, 80, 84, 78, 90, etc. will all be closed as well. Having spent close to 45 years of my life in CT, NJ, NY (including Syracuse during the snowiest winter in record) and three years flying weekly between MCO and the airports mentioned above, I can pretty well say this with good knowledge.

Not sure about that theory. Most of those airports have 12+ hours of delays a few times a year for weather. Even a few thunderstorms can shut down Laguardia for hours. Other than Sandy I can't think of a time I95 was closed for more than a few hours.

  2. But the problem with this is that you now have no idea if you are even prone to seasickness. You could be taking the medication for no reason. Personally, I would rather know even if it means being sick for a day.

I agree but if you are that worried about being seasick you probably will be. There is a big psychological component to seasickness. That is probably why wristbands and magnets work. I notice in smaller boats when you take people out they feel better on the return journey when they know the trip is almost over.

  3. I am trying to coordinate someone coming down from West Palm and picking me up in Miami following an Escape cruise. I am travelling light with essentially carry-on only so could do self-departure but I want to pre-determine a pick-up time that avoids either of us waiting so thought it might be better to linger and choose something late like 10 (better for us to wait a bit than the driver). Would this work? If I don't have luggage will they let me join whatever departure I want or will I still be giving a color coded time that I can't predict now?

We also need to use a non-citizen line if that impacts anyone's advice.

  4. Not to pile on but seems like an interesting choice for a retired couple. I have two kids and would probably not sail over

Xmas from NY. It just to crowded and you pay twice as much for the same cruise.

  5. Are you arriving soon? India has just withdrawn 500 and 1000 notes from circulation causing chaos and long lines at banks and ATMs. Might be better to bring dollars or Euros. Should be sorted out by the end of the month but keep an eye on the situation.

  6. Anyone who wishes to go on the Joy and wants to book via NCL website, your hopes are dashed.

Below is taken from NCL website

Booking Information: Will be open for sale through our Chinese Travel Partners

Basically it will be entirely run in Chinese so they will probably do the initial short cruises and the run to China probably via the Suez for Chinese guests with their Chinese staff. Shanghai Tianjin based cruises are mostly Chinese guests but sounds like these will be completely off the NCL website and maybe only bookable for expats in China.

Probably makes sense as most would be shocked to book on NCL and end up on ship catered to to and filled with Chinese guests.

  7. Deceptive marketing is pretty much par for the course in the cruise industry. 2 for 1. Free gratuities, but not applicable to the lowest fare. So called gratuities in general for that matter. It is what it is. If consumers didn't react to it they wouldn't do it.

  8. Before I start this, I will say that I am a Canadian. I do not see why a Canadian would expect an American company to give a 30% +/- discount to a Canadian because the Canadian Government does not have the economy to compete with the US. If the Canadians want better values then isn’t it up to the Canadian Government to strengthen the economy to make the Canadian dollar stronger against the US and not up to an American company to discount its fair unfairly to satisfy the shortcomings of the Canadian economy?

If the Canadian market was large enough they probably would. All inclusive prices in Cuba, Mexico and Dominican prices have plunged in USD terms as operators are forced to keep prices fairly stable inCanadian dollar terms.

There are discounts on some lines for nationalities which have fallen against the USD. I travel a lot when I go online I see that for example Celebrity offers much lower prices to non-north Americans.

  9. I agree, especially for women modesty is preferred. Linen pants and shirts would be ideal for both sexes. Women could wear a longer dress that might be cooler. While lighter colours are cooler they will be stained black by the end of the day.

  10. It varies and changes depending on the timing of New Years. LA public schools go back Jan 9 this year for example and private schools tend to always have a bit longer break. Add in Canadians Europeans and South American families and here should be other teenagers onboard.

What ages did you use this? I tried with our first but around 6-12 months she seemed to roll into the sides and wake up. Gave it away but thinking about getting another for our next baby as we have a few trips planned.

  12. To me local food would be south Asian. Indian, Pakistani etc. They are well over half the population. Lebanese would be another good. There are also good Iranian restaurants which is something you might not get at home. If I remember correctly your hotel is on the old side of the river so,well located to access a lot of the local cuisine. The Indian part of town is nearby for example. Try TripAdvisor or Timeout Dubai for specific recommendations.

  13. My family has similar travel aims and yet I like cruises mostly for the combination of relaxation and moving around to new places. I haven't yet taken a Norway cruise, but have it on the short list for the next two years so have done some research. I have also been to Norway including when a cruise was in port in Oslo so have seen it first hand. Some of the smaller cities might get "overun" but if you head out into nature I think you can still enjoy yourself. Even in Oslo beautiful nature is a very short drive away.

I hadn't known about the option above but even a mainstream cruise can offer a lot of advantages for seeing Norway and cost wise Norway is extremely expensive so having your lodging and meals on board will save a lot over staying in a land hotel and let you spend your money on activities. Assuming you have a direct flight to London cruising out of Southampton can also save time and money over Scandinavian cities.

  14. It can be a bit tricky to navigate port to train station on your own without speaking Chinese. Of course the absolute rip off taxi driver and guide wouldn't dream of charging anywhere near $1600 even accounting for entries and hotel costs.

Once you are at station getting a train ticket and then moving around Beijing is fairly straightforward in cheap metered taxis. Sites where a guide is useful (e.g. Temples and Forbidden City) will have reasonably priced unofficial guides and also official English speaking guides.

It was a few years ago but I was able to find a driver who would take me from Beijing for under $100 and that was a nice new car with an English speaking driver. A mid-range chain hotel should be able to arrange a pick-up at port for something in that range. They should also be able to find a driver to take you to the wall, wait and then drive you to port for not too much more. I would think $150 depending on what Great Wall site you go to. There is no reason for a guide at the wall. It is self evident what you are looking at.

  15. I have a different approach based on how we always allocated rooms in College. (5 of us split a different house every year). We had a few economics majors so we tried to use incentives and find everyone's best price. That could also work here.

You need to find out who values the UBP the most and get them to pay what they think it is worth. You could bid or something but that is complicated.

I would assign a price for each spot in the room and then draw names and let people choose in order what they want. So maybe $850 for the two people who get UBP and a proper bed. $700 for the other 2 who get a comfortable bed and $650 for whoever gets stuck in the pull out couch or other weird berth. Someone might actually choose the worst and therefore cheapest option if they are more price sensitive and heavier drinkers would choose to pay more of UBP. The key is to discuss and agree on the prices before you choose who picks first. They might value the UBP more than I suggested if everyone plans to drink a lot.

  16. I have always gone on my own both from Kobe and Tokyo. The sights are spread out in Kyoto and inconvenient to public transport so needed taxis. I recall seeing some guide recommendations on this thread. Also try TripAdvisor.
