  1. Do you know if they have more than one trolley for the beach link? If it's only one, then would the below estimates be sound?

If it starts at 9:30 at the Galleria end, then it should be by our hotel around 9:45-9:55, which means Denny's by roughly 10am.

If it starts at Denny's at 9:30, then we have to wait for it to go to the Galleria end and head back our way, which means around 10:15-10:25, and Denny's by 10:30am.

  2. See my edit...The Trolley doesn't start running until 9:30 AM.

If you are standing on the same side of the street at the Hyatt Pier 66 then the Trolley is headed towards Denny's. If you walk across 17th Street to catch the Trolley it will be headed towards the beach and the Galleria.

    Great. thx!

  3. What difference does it make where they start? All that matters is what time they will be in front your hotel.

it matters because if the start at Denny's, then pick us up as they head to the Galleria end, that means we have to ride the whole circuit before they get back to Denny's, where we want to go. If they start off at the Galleria end, then pick us up, we will be at Denny's very quickly. We have a Segway tour we need to be at mid morning, so it matters to our schedule how long we will be on the trolley.

  4. Don't count on being able to "waive down" the Sun Trolley even though it says so on the trolley and the web site. I was doing a back to back on Princess a couple years ago and had my car parked at my attorney's office near North Broward Hospital. I was in an area where there would be no problem stopping to pick me up, but the driver just kept on truckin'. I caught up to her at the stoplight at Federal Highway and she said said she only had to stop at Bus Stops. A debate ensued which escalated into an argument and at the Publix she ordered me off the shuttle. I refused, she said she would call the police and I said I would call her supervisor. That ended the argument, but she was in a huff and sat at Publix for about 20 minutes.

I've read reviews of other riders having similar experiences!

I understand what you mean about them running in a circle, but when they leave the garage in the morning, they have to either head to the Galleria Mall part of Beach Link, or the Denny's end. I will give them a call today to see where they start. Thx!

  5. I think Go Shuttle goes everywhere, and that you might not need reservations, but you pay per person, which costs a lot more than taxi or uber usually, if you are party of more than one. You can reserve online. It's $12.50 per person including luggage and gratuities for a shared ride. It's the same company as Yellow Cab, LOL. This is the shortest ride, 4.6 miles, and about a third of that is the airport road itself! Of course if traffic is heavy and the bridge is up and there are only 2 of you, it might end up cheaper than a taxi, because it is a flat rate.

I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but I would strongly suggest getting the Uber app, even if you only use it for this trip. You really don't need a car rental now that we have Uber, unless you plan on driving really far. I've used it to/from the airport, from the port, and around town. They arrive within minutes and are very courteous. Locals use it all the time when they go out drinking. If you feel unsure, you can post questions here and we'll help you. If they have it where you live, you could do a test ride to a friend's house. My DH is a technophobe and he uses Uber...he was really nervous at first, but he got over it during our first ride.

Regarding the hotel parking and the rental car, the hotel and Avis are separate entities, and it's even possible that the parking is a separate entity also.

    Thanks, Sharon.

I had previously checked out GO Shuttle. They have a ride share from the airport for $25 for 2, plus 20% tip, but their return trip would need to be a private car at $46 for 2, which is too much waste to me. Do you know about South Florida Shuttle? Looks like they are $30 for 2 each way.

Last night, I did take a look at Uber, both how to use it, and the safety of Fort Lauderdale users. What I found is a lot of complaints about Uber drivers accepting the ride, but then they call you to see where you are going. Once they find out that it's only to a local hotel (about a $12-$14 fare), they refuse the ride. Folks are complaining that they are waiting 40-60 mins on the curb until someone finally agrees to their route. My husband would blow his top by then. Best not to risk it with him!

Since we will be coming in on Friday evening, we wanted to be able to do a lot of "beboppin" around on Saturday, but didn't want to deal with a taxi for every leg. Then I discovered the Sun Trolley. Now I'm trying to learn about the routes, how they run, and from which end they start the Beach Link. Are you a local, by chance?

    Thanks for your response!

  6. We will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 and would like to use the trolley along the beach link for the first stop of the day, breakfast at Denny's.

How do I know which end of the beach link the trolley will start from?

Assuming it starts from the Denny's end at 9:30, then we wave it down by our hotel (does it matter what side of the street we are on?), we would have to ride it to the end of the line and wait for it to make a return trip back to the Denny's area...how long might this take?

Best case scenario is that it starts from the other end of the line at 9:30, so that we are on the way to Denny's without having to ride the whole circuit.

I downloaded their app so I can see where the trolley is, but it would be very helpful to know what time I need to get up in the morning to catch a ride to Denny's.

Just to confirm that we can wave the trolley down from any point on the road, no particular spots? Some folks complained that the trolley wouldn't stop for them unless they were at "stops". If that's the case, where are the stops?

    Thanks!

  7. Do you know which shared-ride companies will do a ride from FLL to the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in FTL? The ones I've checked with so far said they either don't do that route (Jiffy Jeff), or don't have availability (QLS).

I know the taxi option is there, but they get really bad reviews on Trip Advisor, so I'm looking for other options. We've never used UBER and I don't see us starting anytime soon. :-)

I was all excited to rent through AVIS so we could skip taxis all days (we'll be in town 2 days before cruising), until I found out the parking prices at the hotel! So expensive to park. You'd think that if you rent a car on site, they would also let you park it either free, or at a reduced cost!

  8. We are among the throngs of cruisers who are considering the taxi option to go from Port Everglades to FLL, however, the reviews for Yellow Cab on Trip Advisor are disgusting. What kind of service have you had? Any experiences of gross cars, deceitful routes through known traffic areas/construction areas, broken meters, etc?

(I know the route should cost between $15-20, so what do we do if they say it's $50?)

  9. After reading all of the glowing reports on TripAdvisor for him, I just sent him an email for a quote. I think he's the real deal and you should be fine!

Just out of curiosity, What rate did they quote you, and what is your pick-up/drop-off? We need a p/u at FLL to a hotel, and then a return trip from Port Everglades to FLL. I hope he gives a good price because I really want to book him based on his reviews!

  10. I'd like to purchase one of those $15 First Night Done Right options, and then also pick up a 3 or 4-night Dining Package, but I'm wondering how that would work, as the $15 deal is for night #1, and the package nights begin on either #1 or #2 nights (RCI's choice, not mine). Would they actually double-book for night #1, or will it be no problem to reschedule the Dining Package to begin on night #2?

    Thanks!

  11. Thanks for posting. Can you share what the amenities were for the hotels and what the rating for the hotel? For hotwire, the rating would be the % of people who recommend the hotel. For priceline, it is usually a number like 7+, 8+, or 9+. Thanks in advance.

  12. Hi,

Thanks for the compliment and appreciating my warped sense of humor. Like food, humor is very subjective. I once had a coworker who never laughed at any of my jokes and whenever I try to say something funny, she would just sigh and said “Oh, Harry…” and shake her head. Shrug. It is what it is.

My wife doesn’t read CC. She thinks I am way too high on the anal scale and I waste time worrying about things that may or may not happen. She’s the type that will deal with problem IF and WHEN they arise. She thinks I spend way too much time on CC to try and improve our vacation by 0.03%.

She may be right. If you think about it, probably less than 3% on any sailing have CC people on it. On our sailing of 4,400+ people, if even 3% of them are CC people in that they read or posted info here, that would be 130 people or so. Our roll call had maybe 25 people at the most and even if you triple that for the “lurkers in the back that never post”, that’s still less than 100 people. Way under the 3% mark.

That meant there are 97% of the people from the cruise that non CC folks and they probably had just as much fun as us, if not more since they didn’t have to worry small details that the anal people worry about and enjoyed the cruise as is, not as what we anal people want it to be. Ignorance is bliss, so to speak. But I guess we anal CC people have access to shrimp cocktail and morning plate of salmons they don’t have…

You're right about the perks of being anal. I'd rate myself at a solid 8.5 on the AS. I'm also married to a bean counter. He never peruses CC no matter how much I tell him of its value. However, maybe I can lure him on if I promise him one of your Excel spreadsheets. He lives, breathes and LOVES them. Ugh. Mine are very basic, but I am a planner. Making an orderly plan helps me enjoy my time, but I like to allow for "limited" flexibility so we don't get too far off track. :-)

We are pricing out the Allure for this March, so I've bookmarked your review of it to start on next. I'm also reading Fletch's review of it concurrently with this one. You two guys are a hoot!

  13. I have done airport mode sometimes like when I took that snapshot. Most of the time now I turn off Cellular Data instead. On an iPhone it is under Settings / Cellular / Cellular Data. I never answer the phone when it rings - unless it's from a number that could imply an emergency. By doing it this way, I can still receive text messages and reply back if needed (with my AT&T plan it is free to receive text messages and 50 cents each if I need to send one).

Interesting! I also have an iPhone with AT&T, so I can follow along with your steps. Thx.

  14. If you buy the espresso drinks from the unbranded espresso kiosk (often called lattetudes) then it's included. If you're on one of the few ships with an actual branded Starbucks, you cannot use any espresso package or espresso-containing package there. BUT those ships will *also* have an unbranded espresso kiosk where you *can* use the package.

I don't suppose we can use Starbucks gift cards onboard, can we?
