  1. So, my DW and I are taking our first cruise with RCI next month. We booked an inside room because we wanted to save money to afford other things on the cruise.

Well, on a whim I decided to call RCI to ask a question about the new wine on board without a corkage fee. I can confirm that "Jeff" in customer service did say effective immediately you could bring 2 750ml bottles of wine on board with no corkage fee.

After that he asked if there was anything else he could do for me, and I jokingly said "yeah, get me in an aft balcony for not much more money." Well low and behold if he didnt look in his system and see an AFT BALCONY he could put me in for only $80 more total!

So while it might not be a true "free upgrade" I was STOKED to get it. :):):)

    Just had to share!

    Thanks for listening.

  2. Hey ya'll,

In November my DW and I will be celebrating out 3rd anniversary aboard the Liberty of the Seas.

We have both opted to purchase the premium drink package, as we both enjoy trying out new drinks to find out what we like.

We are TOTAL rookies when it comes to wine, but it is my understanding that certain wines are paired with different food selections.

Is this something that will be pointed out or listed in the menu for each entree, or do just blindly pick one :)

Thanks for helping out this guy so I won't look stupid on the cruise :)

    Thanks so much

    Tim

  3. Thanks for the replies and help.

We booked it about 3 months ago and it was under 300 a person, not it is over 500pp.

So I feel pretty good about the value we got, but being on a strict budget.... I'm still not thrilled about the inside room.

Either way I'll have a greta time with my wife, but I sure wouldn't mind enjoying room service on a balcony.

  4. Hi

This is the first cruise for my wife and I on RC.

we reserved a cheap interior room for a Thanksgiving room on Liberty.

Just toying with the idea of possibly calling and seeing if we could upgrade to another category for not much more money.

When would be the best time to call and see if there are any more discounted rooms?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. in all our travels, I have found the best option to make sure that you do not get any data charges is to find someone with an old iphone or android phone.

I have several old iphone's that either have a broken screen or the speakers are messed up. These are not connected to my ATT plan in any way.

we use them in port for picture, video, and wifi use. I can log in to my gmail account and send pictures or surf the web while in port, and never worry about it costing me money.

You could also do the same thing with an ipod touch too.

    All the best,

    Tim

    • Bottled water still (500ml)

    • Fountain soda with

    Coca Cola® souvenir cup

  7. It is worth it for me for sure.

    Here is why

1: Whenever I pass a bar, I get a bottle of water. I either drink it, or take it back to the room and save it for later. Comes in handy on excursions. 3 x daily = $10.50 day

    2: I drink 1-2 soda's at breakfast, and 2-3 more during the day. But to keep things conservative I'll say 4 soda's a day = $8

3: It is nothing for me to drink 2-4 beers throughout the day, especially on sea days, but in the idea of staying conservative we will go with 3 x $5.75 = $17.25

4: I always try the "drink of the day" by the pool. $8 ??

5: Without question I stop to get a mixed drink on the way to dinner, usually a jack and coke. = $10

6: With the alcohol package, I will usually try whatever wine is paired with the entree I order. If I like it, I'll have another one. If I don't, I'll chug it or send it back, and order another one. Either way, I have two drinks with dinner = $20

7: By the time dinner is over we go to the evening show, or comedy center, or some other entertainment venue, and I'll have a drink. Red Bull and vodka please. $10

8: I've been known to wind down with a decaf Irish coffee too :)

BY my rough calculations, thats about $84 a day, give or take a couple bucks.

On port days, I might drink a little less. On Sea days, I may have even more out by the pool.

I hardly ever drink at home, so I like to enjoy myself on the cruise and the package allows me to try drinks that I probably wouldn't order if I knew I had to pay for them, even if I didn't like them.

All in all, it probably ends up in my favor at the end of the cruise, but I would rather know ahead of time what my bill will be.

Hope that helps break it down a little bit.

  8. It is just a hobby of mine.

The main reason is we are sailing past Cuba, and they have a bunch of radio chatter always going on and for a while now I have always wanted to listen to it. I figured this would be the best option for me :)

That being said they said I can take the FRS or GMRS radio on board with no problem, and those are also capable of picking up UHF VHF too.

But bottom line, I am a guest on their property and I will abide by their rules, just as I expect them to abide their rules in terms of services promised etc.

    NO biggie.

  9. Howdy again,

Just got off the phone with a very sweet lady at Customer service ( probably the nicest person I've ever talked to at a cruise line ), and I asked about bringing my shortwave scanner on board the boat.

She was very knowledgeable and went and asked someone else about it for me. She verified that it was a "receive only" unit, and that in can in no way shape or form transmit anything.

She came back and asked if I could configure it to listen to the onboard ship comms, and not knowing what the exact freq's were, I told her that if they are on FM, AM, or between 1.7 to 30 MHz, then yes I could tune in the radio comms.

She went back and told the supervisor and returned with the answer that THEY said it was ok to have it on the boat, BUT............ The final answer would come down to what they said on the pier.

So I will not be taking my scanner with me on the trip, even though when I pack it with the laptop and camera gear it would probably go through just fine.

    Hope this helps someone.

    Thanks

    Tim
