  1. We are booked to do a cruise with Viking in August of 2015. We are using Viking Air flying from Chicago to Budapest and then Amsterdam to Chicago. Does anyone know if we can choose our own seats using the regular Viking Air? Or do we have to use their Custom Air? I am 6'3" and have a terrible time if I am stuck in a middle seat on an airplane.

You can pick your seat once you receive the travel info. However, you cannot upgrade to Economy Comfort (business) until your tickets are issued, which is normally 3 months prior to your cruise. This is why I use Custom Air, so they can issue the tickets much sooner. Check with your airline that you are booked on.

  2. They are traveling the other way, from Marseilles to CDG and then from CDG to JFK.

They will arrive at terminal 2F and will walk from there to 2E (about 30 mins).

No security, just a passport check.

90 mins is fine as long as the flight from Marseilles is reasonably close to on-time.

Thanks Mark_T. I spoke with Delta and they confirmed what you said. I also spoke to Viking and they see no problem with the 1-1/2 hr. layover.

Again, thanks to everyone who commented. Very much appreciated.

  3. I called Delta and they said it was fine. All I need to do is go from one gate to another - no security checkpoint. At least that is what they informed me.

Thanks again for all your input. I normally have at least 2-1/2 hrs between flights. Since it is months away, I will call them again in a few weeks,

  4. Thanks all for replying. We are flying Delta from Marseilles at 7:40AM and arriving in Paris at 9:10 and our connection to NY on Delta is 10:40.

I think I am going to call VRC custom air and see what they have experienced in the past as this is on a Sunday morning.

I have not been to Paris in a long time.

  5. We are taking VRC Portraits of Southern France in November and our flight from Marseilles to Paris was just changed.

Question is 1-1/2 hour layover in the Paris enough time between the connecting flights?

    Thanks,

  6. Looking forward to all reviews of this cruise as my DH and I are scheduled for this cruise in November. I have already sailed on a longship in Germany, which I enjoyed. Becki, looking forward to your live comments/reviews in March. FotoPeg, I saved your comments and reviews and enjoyed your pictures.

  7. I have enjoyed 4 cruises with Viking and my 5th will be in November. I have never had a complaint or heard of anyone on my past cruises that were dissatisfied. It is unfortunate that Europe had suffered such flooding issues and strikes along the river; but these issues are not Viking's fault. We also have suffered in the US. Just look at the effects of Hurricane Sandy !!!

  8. Ok, that last email was rather hasty before I had to go to work: If cruise lines do not disembark after free time, they usually offer a shuttle bus to the center. But as you have said, the busses are used for the city tour first, so if you don't want to attend the city tour, you'll need a bus / taxi to go to the center right away.

Not true with Viking. After the initial sightseeing tour, you could stay in the main square and they supplied shuttle busses the rest of the day to and from the ship.

  9. I was wondering if the cost of the beverage package is worth it. It averages out to about $30. per day, per person. Unaware of how long we are in ports, it is difficult to say if a person will be on the ship to enjoy the lounge. I also do not know the hours that the lounge/bar is open.

If you opt for the house wine/beer available with lunch or dinner--are you limited to one glass? Europe is expensive--so I don't know how much of a buy you get buying wine or beer in port. I believe that I read that there is not a corkage fee at dinner. What makes the easy decisions so difficult??

I am booked on the Viking Ageir in September (Grand European). Looking forward to the trip!!

I have taken Viking cruises with the package and without. It all depends if you are a drinker. During the afternoons while cruising you may like to have a drink; or a cocktail before dinner or even after dinner during the show time. The wine served at dinner is unlimited - but it is the house wine. We opt to buy our own wine to our liking. I thought it was a good deal to get the package.

  10. I have taken 3 Viking river cruises and have never had a problem with the company. In fact, I found customer service to be very courteous.

I have been on the Romantic Danube, Elegant Elbe and the Rhine Getaway. All trips were taken in the last week of October or early November.

If people do their research, they will see that water levels fall. In fact, when you are on board, they explain the water levels of the rivers. It is not Viking's fault that Europe did not have a rainy season and the water levels became very low. Look at our own Texas; where people are crying for water because they had severe drought this past year.

I am looking forward to doing another trip with Viking this coming November.
