Renting a car or doing a tour are the best ways to get out there. You can bring a picnic - stop at Solomon's on the way out of the cruise pier to pick up some things (or bring them with you). You'll drive by it on the way. Make sure to bring a cell phone that works in the Bahamas, and plan your trip around low tide - at high tide there are better beaches much closer to town.
