dfb Posted May 31, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 31, 2011 Can anyone with experience tell me about the pockets (or lack thereof) in the complimentary souvenir expedition parkas the ship provides? Just got our inital cruise documents and they list bringing a small waterproof backpack for zodiac excursions. What might we need to pack along for those short trips that would not fit in our pockets? Any insights would be appreciated! Thanks.
dileep Posted May 31, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 31, 2011 We were on the Minerva that was run by A&K before they took on the Le Boreal. If the parkas are the same, the pockets are big enough to hold your gloves and hat in case you take them off. Also big enough to hold a small point & shoot camera. They gave us a blue water resistant back pack that we used to cary a bigger camera and video camera.
dfb Posted June 1, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Thanks. I suspect those photos were not taken in Antarctica!
GeeDunk Posted June 1, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 1, 2011 I had a 35mm camera when I went to Antarctica. I kept it under my Parka during the Zodiac landings. Put my gloves into my Parka pockets.
GeeDunk Posted June 1, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Took my camera out from my Parka when we landed. Didn't want the water spray to damage it.
dfb Posted June 1, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Thanks, we won't be carrying a camera anywhere near as big as yours, so we should be able to do without the suggested backpack.
dileep Posted June 1, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Thanks. I suspect those photos were not taken in Antarctica! Top: Antarctica Bottom: South Georgia We had very mild but wet weather. Never below freezing when we were out. early mornings (3 am sunrise) were chilly. Take layers. Fleece works better than wool!

The bottom photo also looks like South Georgia, maybe you posted the wrong photo as the top image. Regardless, the backpack comes in handy when you don't want to carry items in pockets. laurelhollow Posted June 11, 2011 #10 Share Posted June 11, 2011 In addition to the parka we received a water-resistant back pack. Very useful for carrying the camera. Don't think you have to worry. dfb Posted June 13, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted June 13, 2011 Thanks all. I will scratch that backpack off our packing list. Every little bit will help with a 33 pound weight limit for luggage!
