Priceline/Hotwire for LA suburbs?

Has anyone had any luck using Priceline or Hotwire for Marina del Rey, Venice Beach, or Santa Monica? ... 3 stars and up? I looked on user boards like Better Bidding and Bidding For Travel and only found 2 successful bids, one for the Marriott in MDR and the other for the Holiday Inn in Santa Monica. And we heard their star ratings are too high (like they rate a 2* as a 3*).
