SimplyOlivia Posted December 28, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 28, 2009 We're cruising to Puerto Quetzal on the Norwegian Sun and I'd love to see Lake Atitlan. I've done some research, but I'm having a hard time finding much info. Does anyone know if Lake Atitlan is close enough to the port to do an independent tour? If so, any recommendations on tour providers? Many thanks!

We took the ship's excursion to Lake Atitlan, which included a ferry ride across the lake to Panajachel. Please do not attempt to do this independently. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive each way, plus the ferry is about an hour each way. The drive is along some very dangerous highway (Pan-American). We traveled in a caravan of three buses and were escorted by security carrying machine guns. Tourist vans and buses have been stopped by extorionists and people have been robbed, raped, kidnapped and murdered. I will say it was one of the best things we did on our cruise and I would do it again. You've just got to be careful.
