Beach combing - North or South?

Interested in just beach combing for shells, etc. but not sure which direction might be most interesting. I gather that most of the beach front café/bars are south - and so more people. Anyone wandered north from pier? Ever find any conch shells? Message in a bottle? or just plastic junk? :( How's the sand - course or fine (barefoot or Crocks)?

The beaches near the port are rocky and hard to access. The port area is enclosed and fenced. You could try to access chac chi next to the port if you are adventurous. You could take the bus to town and walk south from there.
