Front of ship

We have been on 4 Alaska cruises and twice on the Radiance. Always mid ship. Staterooms far forward are always prone to rocking, up and down motion. The inside passage is pretty calm, but if you leave protected waters to head to some glaciers you will feel it.

JUst wondering how rough it would be near the front of the ship. We are on floor 7 on Radiance of the Seas. Does anyone know? THanks

If you are on a Northbound trip most of the cruising will be on the inside passage which is like cruising down a river with mountains on both sides of the ship. The seas are protected and are usually calm. The last day going from Hubbard Glacier to Seward you will be in the open ocean and it might rock some. If you are Southbound, it is just the opposite. You will love the cruise.

The above poster is making assumptions that the routes are fixed. They are not. They can and do vary greatly. I have been on, what is considered the true "Inside Passage" (smooth as glass, protected etc etc etc) routes where I certainly did have very rough sailing. And two were round trip Vancouver sailings. There is no way to predict what the sea conditions will be, you are on water. Expect movement. If prone to motion sickness, take precautions.

To second what BQ said above, on our 2 Alaska 'Inside Passage' cruises both on the Ryndam within the a year the route was very different. The first one in Sept 2008 we went right up against the BC coast all the way up through Grenville Channel etc. On the second in May 2009, we were over 25miles off shore for that whole section of the cruise above Vancouver Island, both Northbound and Southbound (I had a handheld GPS). In a way we were kind of unhappy because we didn't think we'd see much out there, but there were whales everywhere, so all in all it was just fine.

Thanks again for your replies. Actually, we are leaving from Seward(Anchorage) and heading to Vancouver. (Southward cruise) The ocean-view on the 7th floor is near the front of the ship. That's why I was asking. Thanks again.

Although, we have not sailed on Radiance, we have sail on the NCL Pearl twice now in Penthouse cabin 10,000 directly on the front of the ship under the bridge on deck 10. Despite being on the front and so high up, we noticed no significant change in the motion in comparison to other cruises where we were midship. Enjoy!
