Best Editing software?

I really enjoy viewing the many vacation videos here on this board. I, too, have a number of HD videos shot in the last year as well as VHS cassettes taken of our kids years ago. I'm looking for a program that is easy to use, gives some of the results seen here and not too expensive. Am I dreaming? Any suggestions?

What type of computer are you using, Windows, Mac, Linux????
