I thought I saw somewhere that you have to be seated at the 6pm seating to take advantage of the kid pick-up at the MDR. Is that true?

yes, it's reserved to 1st seating which might not be at 6:00 pm depending on your itinerary

 

but you have to ask for 1st seating at booking time and then once onboard decide when you want to use this service

We had MDR at 6pm and AO was there at 6:40 to pick the kids up. You do not need MTD to do this. Just let your waiter know that your child is leaving at 6:40 and they will get fee quickly so they can leave
