Akoroa/Christchurch Shore excursions

So, I am deciding in Akoroa between the TransAlpine train (which is over $300 a person, not sure it is worth it?), doing Christchurch on your own (basically a transport to Christchurch) or the tour that does 4 hours of scenery on the Banks Peninsula. Finally there is also the Lord of the Rings tour that is scenery.

 

I also see that there are local tours on the piers organized that do some scenery as well as Christchurch for significantly less than the cruise line.

 

I am most interested in scenery. Has anyone done the train ride and did they feel it was worth the money? Has anyone taken the tour from the local people that goes to the scenery as well as Christchurch? Or done the Lord of the Rings too? I am confused on what to do, so I would be interested in any suggestions.
