P&O Cruises has today released its 2013 winter program, with a strong focus on the short break market across the

61 departures. There are 13 itineraries on offer ex Brisbane and Sydney from Apr- Sep 2013, with more three night

voyages and for the first time ever four night cruises.

P&O is hopeful that the move will further boost interest in cruising, allowing more Aussies to “dip their toe in the water and try a cruise holiday,” according to Carnival Australia senior vice president, Jenny Lourey.

Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl will both cruise out of Sydney offering 35 departures, while Pacific Dawn will offer 26

Brisbane cruises including 15 of its popular one-week voyages.

The P&O 2013 winter program will be open for sale from this Thu 12 Jan, with brochures available for travel agents from

the middle of next month.

Some of the voyages will be marketed under special themes such as Mother’s Day at Sea and Christmas in July, along with the previously operated comedy, lifestyle and food and wine trips.

I wonder if P&O are limiting themselves somewhat. 2 ships based out of Sydney (plus Carnival Spirit) and 1 out of Brisbane? Plus Pacific Pearl will be spending more time in Auckland. What about the rest of the country?

No itineraries out of Fremantle or Melbourne, no itineraries visiting Asia. And more short cruises means they'll be cutting back on other itineraries. Are they trying to force people (who wanna go on longer cruises) to sail with Princess or Carnival Spirit?

If anything, unless they bring in another ship to pick up some of the slack with the longer itineraries, or unless they greatly reduce the price of cruises with Princess or Carnival Spirit, I think a lot more people might look at other options (ie. Royal Caribbean)...
