ddgg Posted March 26, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2012 Does anyone know if it is legal to scatter the ashes of a loved one on Huahine, Riaitea, or Bora Bora? Are you in international waters when sailing between the islands of Tahiti, Huahine, Rangiroa, Riaitea and Bora Bora?
rugbypopsie Posted March 27, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 27, 2012 Most cruise ships do not allow anything to be thrown into the sea. A friend enquired on the Diamond a few years ago and was not given permission to scatter ashes. Sue
cjm66 Posted March 27, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 27, 2012 Does anyone know if it is legal to scatter the ashes of a loved one on Huahine, Riaitea, or Bora Bora? Are you in international waters when sailing between the islands of Tahiti, Huahine, Rangiroa, Riaitea and Bora Bora? There has been discussion of this in the past - not specific to French Polynesia. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1203840 The definition of international waters seems to vary from 12 miles off shore to rather less. It would be at the discretion of the Captain of the ship based on the itinerary and his interpretaion of the rules even if the cruise line's policy allowed it.
