Taormina/Mt. Etna on your own

I will be arriving at the port of Messina May 21 around 10 am. Is it easy to go to Taormina and Mt Etna by public transportation or taxi. We aren't to into private tours. Yet we will only be docked until 7 pm. Thanks for your help.
