Taormina/Mt. Etna

We will be docked in Taormina in late June and have arranged a tour to Mt. Etna. I have two questions. In light of recent eruption activity, is there any reason to change our plans? Assuming the answer to #1 is "No", we also have the option to add more time (and expense, of course) to the tour to go higher up the mountain from Silvestri using the cable lifts. Any opinions on whether this is worthwhile for someone who likes to hike, but is not necessarily fascinated by volcanos? What is there to see higher up? Any thoughts and opinions are welcome. Thanks!
