Flam Railway as Day Trip

I will have a day alone in Bergen in March prior to meeting up with a group that will be going on one of the Norway Coastal Voyages.

 

As I pursue ideas for the day I am wondering if anyone has taken a day trip from Bergen on the Flam Railway? I've been looking at various train schedules from Bergen to Myrdal and then on the Flam Railway, but it seems like it would be a long day, and I will need to return for a dinner in Bergen.
