What we did . . .

We had a great day in St Kitts and this is what we did . . .

We rented a car from Avis which was a short walk from the terminal. The 'office' was in fact the trunk of the car in the street. The car was a Nissan Almera automatic which drove quite well, far better than the heap we rented from Mr Hertz the previous day in Antigua.

We drove north directly to Brimstone Castle and had the place to ourselves for an hour before the buses started to arrive. This castle, a World Heritage Site, was far and away the most impressive single place we visited on our entire 10-island cruise. It is utterly magnificent and from up there you get jaw-dropping views of St Eustatius, St Marten and even St Barts.

We continued north along the round island road which is in excellent condition - St Kitts is a fairly affluent island and it shows. People seem to like the scenic railway, which we saw a few times, but we like to stop every now and then and driving here is an absolute doddle - we drove all around the coast, stopping to admire the scenery and wander around the odd village, until we got back to the Basseterre area. Here we veered north, drove past the hideous-looking Marriott resort, along the peninsula and ended up at a restaurant called Carambola which rented us sun loungers and umbrellas. The beach here is excellent and we had a pleasant hour in the water before we had a lunch of lobster salad with a nice bottle of Chilean sauvignon blanc.

There were two cruise ships in port that day and at no time did we encounter any crowds. That was one of the best days of the trip.
