Halifax, Portland and Quebec

Quebec is one of my favorite places and you can see it easily on foot or by horse drawn buggy. IMHO if you are just here for a day or so you should concentrate on the Old City.. there is so much to see and it's right at your footsteps..the Lower Town has old churches, museum and lots of quaint shops and restaurant... you can take steps or the funicular ($1.50 each way last time I was there in Feb. 04) to the Upper walled town where the Citadelle is located.. just walking the streets and enjoying the ambiance and history of the place will take a whole day. For lunch a prix fixe meal at Ancient Canadian will give you the flavors of Quebec at a reasonable price. Check out http://www.quebecregion.com/e/circuits-vq.asp

Halifax: Maritime Museum, fortress, harbor cruise (check to see if Bluenose II is in port then for a real treat) .. you can spend the whole day here right off the ship along waterfront and up Spring Garden St to the fort. There are beautiful gardens in Halifax and, like Portland, excellent seafood (chowder, lobster etc). There are of course tours to Peggy's Cove, Lunenberg etc. Check out http://www.halifaxinfo.com

Portland is another walkable port although there are tours to Kennenbunkport and shuttles to Freeport for the outlets.. You can do harbor cruise to see all the lighthouses and a comb trolley/harbor tour for around $30. There's an old railroad with small museum near the dock also. Lots of seafood place along the wharf there. Very picturesque IMHO and Casco Bay area is lovely. See http://www.visitportland.com
