How long pre-cruise in Auckland around New Year's?

Our cruise departs January 3rd-I neglected to arrange airfare and am now scrambling-talk about paying the price! We are flying in from Los Angeles and after spending a day recovering from air travel (17-20 hours and losing a day plus) would like to enjoy the highlights of Auckland-will anything be open on New Year's Day? We are trying to decide which day to schedule our arrival. Thanks in advance for your advice!

We are arriving on January 1, and looking to tour on January 2. If anyone has any ideas for what we might do on January 2, we are open to suggestions.
