Mazatlan

Hi there - I've looked over the last 4 pages of posts and can only find one recommendation of things to do in Mazatlan.... that was Randy's happy horses but also saw that Randy had died.

Anyone who has been there please help by giving your ideas of things to do in Mazatlan...... both active and non-active activities would be appreciated by the many people who are going there now that cruise ships are again doing this port of call.

What is the best way to get acquainted with the area? Is there public transportation available?

What is this port especially noted for? Thx for your help

We will be there in December and will be going to Stone Island. You probably aren't finding anything as ships didn't stop in Mazatlan last year. Try a search on Stone Island. You can do tours(we did this the first time) or on your own(what we have done each time since).

Try this:

When you get off the ship they will shuttle you thru the dock area to a visitor center. Walk thru the center and you should see many pulmonia's lined up (google it - looks like a cross between a volkswagon "thing" and a golf cart.) Hire one to take you on a three hour tour around town, then drop you off at the water taxi to Stone Island (there are two water taxi spots, you want the one closest to the boat). Take the water taxi out to Stone Island (save your ticket - it's round trip). Walk down to Victors and order beers and coconut shrimp. When you're ready to go, go back to the water taxi dock, they will see you and come pick you up and take you back to their dock. It's about a 5 minute walk back to the visitor center.

It's been about 3 or 4 years since we've been there, but I think the pulmonia was about $20/hr, $50 for three hours. Find a driver that speaks pretty good English.

Mazatlan has a lot of local buses that come and go very near the port. We usually take the green bus if we are going to the Mercado downtown. Different buses use different routes to get there, but you can ask the locals which one to catch going and coming back.

On one visit, we walked the approximately one mile to the Pacifico/Corona brewery, where we were given a very inclusive tour, followed by a beer at the "top of the tower" lounge. They also gave each of us a small momento brochure with our picture included. Cost ..........zero, plus some good exercise.

In a prior visit, we just walked to the cathedral for a self-tour, followed by some local window shopping.

On another we walked westerly from the cruise dock, crossing the divided road outside the port, towards the hill. After about 1/2 mile we reached the coast, which was quite nice. Proceding northerly, perhaps another 1/3 mile, we reached a beach and hotels, an art museum and archeology museum. We toured the art museum, checked the internet at an inexpensive cafe, shopped for jewelry, and then had inexpensive beers before walking back to the cruise dock. An interesting part of Mazatlan, it being the "old city zone." We also found a great bakery nearby, so had a coffee and sweet bread.

We have no problem in walking all around Mazatlan from the ship. We've never actually been to the Gold Zone, however, or the nearby islands. Wherever we go we seem to run into the tour buses, except we've walked it.
